While I agree there's no way Atlanta would give us Harrington for just that, I certainly wouldn't dismiss the notion of them wanting to move him though. If they go ahead & draft Marvin Williams that certainly jeopardizes Harrington's future there. After looking hard at Atlanta's roster & salaries, the only conclusion I can come to if this trade actually did go down is that we would receive Boris Diaw. Unless its a future draft pick, nothing else really makes any sense, just look at the Hawks' multi-year contracts: Al Harrington: not for what we're discussing here Josh Childress: decent rookie campaign, why move him? Josh Smith: no way Jason Collier, Predrag Drobnjak, Tony Delk: no thanks! Which leaves Diaw, a young, athletic swingman that plays good defense. Hmmmmm.......never heard that kind of player mentioned before.
If the Rockets draft Luther Head I will be royally pissed. Luther Freaking Head? Of Illini fame? How can anyone even bringhis name up at 24 or even 31 with a straight face? Did anyone here actually watch him play this past season? This must be a nightware. My draft night will be ruined if we mess this up. Now I am really getting worried. PS. I hope Atlanta is planning on giving us Tyrone Lue back in a S&T before I can accept this deal CD - do not mess this one up please.
scenario 1: the bucks draft andrew bogut the hawks take marvin williams as a result, the hawks will have a logjam at the SF and PF positions and will need to move one of their Fs, most likely Al Harrington. josh smith and josh childress showed a lot of promise last season, so i can see the hawks looking to move al harrington. heck, they just spent their #2 pick on Marvin and will thus need to create room and minutes for him. also, the hawks have made it known that they are looking to upgrade at PG, so I can see them wanting to select Roko Ukic. hypothetical trade: hawks trade al harrington and 2nd round pick rockets trade this year's first round pick #24 why is this so unlikely?
Under JVG, we've had only two second round picks and taken Badiane and Spanilous, isn't that taking a gamble?
Because they could get far more for Al Harrington. He's 25 years old and averaged 17.5 points, 7 boards and 3.2 assists last season. This is all just speculation to me, but if you're comparing the value of the 24 and the 31, yes the 24 is worth more ... but you have to give added value to the 31 being the first pick of the second round -- meaning the contract is not guaranteed. It does not have a set salary structure on it. So Atlanta has to give a little more, but Al Harrington?
But, on the other hand, if Atlanta take Williams, won't that then automatically lower Harrington's trade value, since teams will know that the Hawks need to try to move him? It becomes more of a buyer's market once Atl takes Marvin.. But then again, maybe they play it smart and wait until after the draft, and let a bidding war for Harrington jack up the price, and maybe they get what they need via trade, keep 31, and get what they need through a trade instead of at 24.. (hopefully Atlanta's abyssmal trade history holds form, and they do a deal with us for Harrington+31 swapped for #24..) That would certainly make the taking of a 2nd-rounder like Hodge or Head more palatable, if we came away with Harrington too.
i wouldnt be surprised if they gave us harrington...they are use to giving away players. they did it lastyear. its not un-normal for crappy teams to give away players..thats why they are crappy in the first place. teams DO give away players. just ask denver how they got martin from the nets?
The Spurs don't seem have any problem with drafting and giving PT to first year players. Why can't we add young legs and glad hearts -- even if they only have role player talent or down the road growth potential? Or maybe Les, JVG & Co. invested in linamint oil and heating pads?
Kenyon Martin was a restricted free agent, if memory serves. He was going to outright sign with Denver, leaving the Nets with nothing if they did not match. Martin got obscene money, the Nets got three first round draft picks and the Nuggets got their man ... albeit at a much greater cost than it had to be. Team do give away players, and Atlanta (both Rasheed Wallace and Antoine Walker) is a great example of this. But there is usually a reason -- too costly/cap weight, soon-to-be a free agent, age, etc. Harrington is 25 years old putting up those numbers. His contract is not even close to a problem -- roughly $6 million per and is a free agent next season. All I'm saying is the difference between picks 24 and 31 is not Al Harrington. I'd love to be wrong, but if I was, they would need to clean house at the top in Atlanta.
Any chance this is just Luther Head's agent trying to get his name mentioned in the first round. Nah, an agent wouldn't do that would he? Say you represent him, and in the 30 mock drafts you've looked at he's always in the 2nd. round. That means no guaranteed for him or more importantly, no guaranteed money for you. So if you start a rumor that Head is THE Rocket's choice at #24, but, he might be gone before that pick, All the teams picking just ahead of the Rockets will at least go back and take a second look at him. I'm not saying the Rockets wouldn't like to have Luther Head, he could be a very good choice for the team, especially if we could somehow get a high second round pick. But nothing is exactly what it seems at this time of year and nobodyis going to tell you what they are really thinking. I'm pretty sure it was the same type of agent rumor that made it look like the Rockets betrayed Rashard Lewis.
I'm sick of us trading all our 1st round picks. I still believe that the best way to build is through the draft. And for us, it's by far the best way. We're almost certainly not going to be able to trade for a 3rd piece - we just don't have the commodities. In the draft, you pick up some players that will never do anything. But it's also the best time to pick up a player that's severely underrated. SA has done this to marvelous effect, obviously. We've neglected it for years. We need to pay attention again.
Honestly, it wouldnt surprise me if the Rockets make a deal with Atlanta. If the Rockets dont find a good value at #24 and feel they can get a chance at a couple of players they like at #31 then I am sure they would do it. Remember, 2nd round picks dont have a slotted salary like 1st rounders. If you can get the guy you want and not have to gaurantee them 3 years then why not? I could see the Rockets trading Atlanta #24 for #31 and Boris Diaw. Diaw doesnt serve a purpose in Atlanta anymore and his salary fits into one of our Trade Exceptions. Diaw is a 6'8" swingman so the Rockets could end up getting two players out of this draft if you include Diaw. And forget the Al Harrington talk. Atlanta wouldnt throw him into the deal. Diaw is the likely candidate. I am not advocating this move. But I could see it happening.
Agreed. But if Williams IS their pick, Harrington is on the way out, one way or another. Diaw is the only piece that they have that might get a deal like that done. And this non-guaranteed 2nd round contract garbage better not be a draw. Them trading down mostly for that would be a crock, considering that they aren't anywhere close to being under the cap or near the luxury tax. This does reek of agent smokescreen, but I guess I'll take any rumors I can get at this point eh?
Hopefully, all this talk of trading out of the first round again is just a smokescreen. It would really astound to me if the Rockets brought in over 40 players in private workouts and were still unable to find a single one that was worthy of a first round draft pick.
I don't know. There have more than a few comments (from CD in interviews, etc) that say they think whoever they get at 24 won't contribute this year. I seriously find that hard to believe with guys like Diougu, Simien, Jack as possible players left on the board at the time. It really makes me think they will trade down getting a established player in return along with a 2nd-rounder with which they will draft someone like Mickaƫl Gelabale from France. The guys on ESPN last night raved about him and sounds like a good fit. One web site said he was Bruce Bowen with alot better offense and is noted to be a superb athlete who can jump through the roof.
Dropping from 24 to 31 is not a huge drop, especially considering how much parity everyone says is in this draft. Considering we could get someone just as good at 31 as at 24 (if not the same guy), but with a friendlier contract, plus additional compensation, it might be a good idea.
Given CD's draft record, anything better than a total mess (Snackbar, Roderick Rhodes) will be A+ for me.
Isn't there something we can work out with New Jersey? Didn't we give them 2/5ths of their starting lineup for EG? Is there a fool out there who will return the favor to us? Maybe Atlanta is that fool
