They could have made more money by calling it Sockem Boppers after the popular childrens mechanically operated robot-fighting game.

Gotcha, well the chips would easily handle 1080p and that is going to make a big different to what you are seeing even today.

4k is a whole nother level.....

I use a 3 monitor setup which isn't too far off from 4K (3600 x 1920 with 3 in portrait mode and 5760x1200 in landscape). It's really hard to play console games after playing PC games in either of those resolutions.

Back to the topic at hand, I have no problem with a one owner system for games on the PC, but that is mainly due to how Steam implements it. There are very generous sales on games within months of it's release. Every year Steam has amazing sales in December and in July. I don't mind that I can't resell any of the games I got on Steam, because most of the time I got them for far less than what they would have cost on a console.

I don't think Microsoft would go to the level of the Steam sales (50-90% off), but it would definitely help ease people into the idea of only being able to buy a game new. Perhaps you'll still be able to take a game to a friends house, you'll just have to log into your XBox Live ID to unlock it.

As long as I can still rent from GameFly, I have no issue with this. I usually purchase new anyway unless I can't find a certain game.

Losing the used game market has a potential of doing a lot of damage to the game industry, imo. There's a reason Gamestop makes a lot of money, and why you would see things like the PS2 selling well into the 'new' generation. The market for people who want to partake in gaming but doing so without spending as much $$$ is pretty big.

More importantly, those people who get in cheap at the beginning or in a new game franchise with an older entry are far more likely to get the new product/sequel when it goes out the door if they do have a little more disposable income at the time.

In addition, for all the validity of the relation between Gamestop and game developers, let's not act like the used retail model is shunned by the game company money. Advertising, commercial space, preorder bonuses and exclusives...these guys work hand in hand. Digital Distribution, while I love it, has got a long way to go before it can get the kind of mindshare and penetration it needs outside of the PC games crowd.

I won't buy a new system if they don't allow used games to be played on the system. Every once in a while i'll buy a new game that I really want, but i'm too much of a casual gamer to waste all that money on new games. I'm not really worried about it though -- the PS3 has a lot of life left.

It will be a big mistake if Sony or Microsoft pull that nonsense though... not being able to borrow a game from a friend --> dumb.

I wonder how digital Distribution will affect broadband services when gamers flock to DL the new release of call of duty... only to realize their once fast connection if slowed to a crawl with people transferring 5+ gigs of data each.

With net neutrality up in the air, it might be several years off.

You don't think this move will raise the price of those games? There would no longer be a used market for video games. Once you break the seal the value of your game drops from 100% to 0%.

And I think this has more to do with piracy. Microsoft isn't greedy enough to make this move to prevent many other businesses from making money.
