I would be more than fine with that, if it meant Smart would come to Texas.

Randy Shannon would be great too.

Source close to #UF confirms to me that Major Applewhite is expected to be named #Gators offensive coordinator under Muschamp

It's going to take a co-coordinator title, at the minimum, for Major to stay. But even so, I fully expect him to leave as him and Muschamp are close and would probably be given full reigns on the offense.

As far as a replacement, Shannon was supposed to be named DC for Kentucky today but has pulled his name after today's events. Eric Winston also tweeted Shannon will be DC for Texas (not sure how he would know though).

Come on man, you can't expect a head coach at an FBS program to take a demotion. I don't care if it is going from Houston to Texas. That's not going to get him the next stepping stone gig like succeeding as a HC at a mid major would. And he makes more money a the UH HC than he would at UT (he was making more than Muschamp was).

Texas replaces defensive coodinators every other season, so I don't see a big deal there. I was never thrilled with him as a possible head coach anyway.

I love Applewhite, he was one of the big reasons I became a longhorn fan. Losing the name hurts, but he didn't appear to be in their immediate plans.

I honestly would like an overhaul on both units. We've become far to much of a finesse program that gets pushed around in the trenches.

I don't mind a spread offense as long as it's a run first spread, not Texas Tech chuck the ball around style, which is what we've become.

Eric Winston tweeting Randy Shannon is the next Texas DC.

Not a bad replacement. Good recruiter and he finished with a top 10 defense in the country every year at Miami but one in 2004 remaining as defensive coordinator after taking head coaching duties.

Guys...the writing on the wall is that Mack is the one who went back on his word. Muschamp made a sound business/career decision because Mack's timeline dissolved. Dude is from Gainesville. Deal with it.

The current recruits and potential future inroads to Texas talent are the big losses. Texas will have no problem bringing in top OC/DC/coaching talent. That has NEVER been an issue. Texas will still get the majority of HS talent as well. However, Florida now has something they've really never had: a SERIOUS key to the households of HS players all over this state. Major will be key to Muschamp's recruiting successes in the near and distant future.

Don't blame Muschamp/Applewhite. This is Mack's baby and he will skirt the responsibility and dodge many bullets through political campaigning and handclapping.

    I need a drink.

The guys at 247Sports say nothing has been decided yet regarding Applewhite and Akina. I would trust them over random Florida beat writer on twitter.IMO, if push comes to shove, you almost have to make Major the OC...losing him possibly costs 2 entire recruiting classes, including a potential game changer RB.

futants -- Agreed, I don't blame Muschamp (and Applewhite if he leaves too). However, I wouldn't overdo the future inroads aspect. The biggest decision factor with recruits is still typically proximity to home, and that's not changing. I'm more worried about losing ground to A&M and rising Baylor and TCU than to Florida. Just like we have work to do with our recruiting class, Muschamp and co. have a Florida class and talent base they need to secure -- especially with FSU coming on strong these days. I don't recall Bama getting many Texas players because of Major, so there's that.

More worrisome is losing this current recruiting class and being way behind for next year. As of now, it seems like only two coaches are secure -- Giles and Chambers. Ironically, Giles is the DE coach, where we hardly have enough guys to fill the 2 deep, and Chambers is the TE coach, where we basically have nothing but warm bodies (and too many of them). If you lose Major, you likely lose the #1 RB recruit in the country, and if Akina goes, you'd probably guarantee Aaron Williams goes pro and lose a couple more secondary recruits. We're already teetering with the LBs and DTs as a result of Tolleson and Muschamp. It will also be interesting to see a guy like Jordan Hicks. If I recall, his recruitment came down to Florida and Texas, and Muschamp was the guy who got him here...

Randy Shannon is getting a lot of buzz, especially since he was set to become Kentucky DC and those plans got cancelled once this came out. There was also some rumors of him joining the coaching staff before Muschamp left, which didn't make sense. As a DC, it does make sense. He would give us just as many inroads to South Florida as Muschamp/Major have to Texas. There's also talk of Jim Jeffcoat as a D-Line coach, though his track record (fired from the Cowboys and the Houston Cougars?) is a bit more suspect.

gonna be hard to fill all those stadium seats when you're coming off a 5-7 season, and now potentially losing good recruits.

I'm already hearing some of UT-Austin branch's recruits thinking of Baylor (Russell) and A&M

    Hooray, a bigtexxx sighting!

Don't worry, I think Texas will be ok on the business side.

Of course recruits are going to start thinking of going elsewhere when the coordinator and position coach leave. Russell has already said he's waiting to see who the replacements are. If we bring in Randy Shannon and a Jim Jeffcoat, my guess is most of them stick around.

The bigger immediate issue for Texas is that Applewhite & Muschamp were supposedly the two most committed & hard-working recruiters. They were the "youth" of what was otherwise a contented staff. Right now, there is basically nobody on the staff anymore. A handful of recruits have apparently already said their commitments are in the air now, though I have no idea the reliability of that report (a lot of recruits were in town this weekend, so it would have been easy to ask them).

Fortunately, no one can do anything but a verbal commitment now, so they really can just wait to see who the replacements are besides deciding anything.

I am pretty sure the 5-7 team is full of 3,4,5 star talent. I don't think texas will have trouble recruiting. The problem is getting guys like luck go,

More texting with J.S. this morning. Shannon could be announced DC very soon.
