I do not want to lose Luther in this trade, he could be a good bench player in the future.

How long have I been saying the Rockets had to try to move up? I even predicted that the move up had to be with either Atlanta or Minnesota and for purposes of obtaining either Roy or Gay. Oh yea, the answer is for more than two weeks now. Follow the link (go to post #16 and check the date):

They don't call me Swami for nothing!!! ;)

Now lets just hope the Rockets brass can make it happen. Please, please, please, please just make it happen!!!! Come on CD give us a parting gift! Come on Morey bring us some beginners luck! For all of us who bleed Rockets red through thick and thin, we suffered alot last season (through no ones fault but dumb luck as I've never seen a season like that for injuries). This would be a major draft coup to be able to move up at this time for Roy or Gay. KEEPING MY FINGERS CROSSED!

Starter > Bench player. Bench player easier to find than starter.

Absolutely incorrect. The two are very similar players: long, athletic wings who are smooth with the ball, make good decisions, and create off the dribble for themselves and for others. While Roy has a better mid-range game, his showing from the arc as a senior was identical to Brewer's as a junior. Neither will stun you from the perimeter, but both can hit their open shots. The biggest difference between the two really is Brewer's anticipation of passing lanes.

The other factor to remember is that no one was even talking about Roy at this time last year, while Brewer was scoring more, shooting better from the arc, and being widely touted for his athleticism and well-rounded basketball skills. And to add to that, Roy did not make definitive strides in his offensive game until his senior year, while Brewer is leaving before that senior year.

To suggest that Roy is a far superior offensive player than Brewer is just not looking at the stats or the offenses they ran (Washington's being a much more uptempo scheme that was conducive to Roy getting off more shots). I think the point is that both are very good players and either would fit the Rockets need for a longer, more athletic wing. The difference is whether or not you want to give up an athletic, competitive, sweet shooting kid like Luther Head just to get a similarly talented player,

But if both are gone by #8, I'd admit to having plenty of egg on my face.

I might add that Head will be far better than a decent bench player. He put up a fairly solid 9 ppg, 3 rpg, 3 apg as an undersized rookie two while shooting 36% from the arc and having a decent a/to ratio. He will never be a full-time starter for a very good team at the two, but he can be a very good combo guard in a system like ours that does not force him to be the primary creator and distributor with the ball. The biggest thing for him is finding the right position in the right system. His athleticism, shot, handle, and lateral quickness defensively are all very good and he played far better than expected as a rookie. On a bad team, sure, but much better than other a late first-rounder.

You know, the only thing that worries about this type of speculation is what happens if someone else trades into the top 7? So many rumors going around and I don't think the Rockets are the only ones serious about trading up...

Based on the needs of the top 7 teams right now, one could assume the Rockets have a good chance of getting a solid player to fill their needs at the SG or PF position. The problem is will that person be able to contribute immediately because the Rockets aren't looking to bring youth along at this point. To that end they really need to be willing to do whatever they can to get Roy or Morrison. Morrison's stock is rising right now while Roy seems to be sliding a bit. No worries - Roy is a perfect fit at Houston. I think the Rockets do what they can to get in the 5 spot and pray Charlotte or Toronto don't pull any suprises.

The thing that scares me is if Phil Jackson is crazy enough to trade Odom or Bynum for a crack at Roy since he wants a big guard like him to run the triangle. With Kobe playing the three & Roy at the two, Phil would be back in familiar territory. Roy did after all work out for the Lakers....

...but then again, maybe I'm being paranoid.

Luther Head's are a dime a dozen in the NBA, he is replaceable. It is a hell of a lot harder to find a all around starting 2 guard with complete skills on both sides of the court, than an average undersized streak shooting combo guard for some depth. Also I bet if every GM in the NBA was asked, who was the better player out of Brewer and Roy , they would all say Roy. Crooked arms Brewer is not in the class with Roy.

I still feel a bit uneasy about this potential deal. I've already said it earlier but I rather not lose what little depth we have. I'd rather stand pat at #8 and pray somebody drops to us and if not then grab Brewer.

If Guillermo Diaz is still available when we pick at #32, the Rockets can get their Luther Head replacement. They are the same player. So, if Guillermo is there, and we pass on him, then that should tell you what gave up in Luther.

would you rather have a 2 guard combo of Brewer and Head or Roy and Bogans?

So, tell me why. Their stats were fairly comparable last year, but Brewer was much better in each of the two previous seasons. And that was while being a whole class behind Roy. Brewer also tested out better athletically than Roy.

So, again, why is Roy that much better? I can grant his mid-range game is better, but that is it. Otherwise, they are almost identical players. But by your "crooked arms" comment, I can see what it is. Shawn Marion worked out fine with a similarly awkward shot.

Diaz is not in the ballpark with Head. He was an out of control, undersized one in college. Had it not been for the hip injury, Head would have been a much better player at a much earlier stage. He has a better shot, is more physically goind to the basket, and doesn't make nearly as many bad decisions with the ball.

And, no, it's not like Head is irreplaceable. But he is fairly cheap, plays hard, has some upside, and knows what is expected of him in Van Gundy's system. The above post about Brewer and Head versus Roy and Boggans strikes at the heart of the issue: assuming we use the MLE on Mike James or a similar combo guard as a backup one, where does that leave us? I would take a backcourt of Alston/James and Brewer/Head anyday over Alston/James and Roy/Boggans.

I am not a professional scout, so I have no idea why. What I do know is Roy is projected as the best guard in the draft and the 2nd best swingman (behind Morrison).

I just want to go on record and say that I think Foye could end up being the best player taken in this draft. Sure he's a little undersized, but the dude could be a great fit in Houston, where the attention will be focused on Yao and T-Mac.

All I'm saying is that if we can't move up, and no one slips to us, drafting
Foye would not be the end of the world. In fact, all of you Brewer lovers are crazy if you would pass on Foye in his favor.

Could end up being a poor man's Dwayne Wade.

No, I'm not joking, I'm dead serious.

The way I see it, as long as one of the Williams' goes in the top 7, the Rockets will get a stud at 8.

That said, I love Morrison, Roy, and Gay too.

I don't understand why everyone thinks the reason for the Rockets to move up would be to target Roy or Gay?

    Obviously Morrison is the target.

And obviously that is why they were talking to Portland, and that is why the thing with Roy came up when it did.

It's just plain bizarre that everyone is talking about Roy and Gay when the only reason to trade up like say taking on Miles is to get Morrison not Gay or Roy.

Otherwise they would just stay at #8.

It's unreal how people here rate Gay and Roy above Morrison.

But hey the forum consensus rated Swift as being a future all star and Boki as the pick over Tayshaun, and Redick as a at best kerr and Brewer as the next Marion.

So I guess the poor player judging just has no end here.

Jordan also would have used the first overall pick in the 2000 draft to get Darius Miles, and also picked Kwame Brown in 2001. with a track record like that, maybe the Rockets should not pursue Roy?

But Morrison won't be there past 3, and the Blazers will not give us Morrison if they can keep him themselves. The only way we get Morrison is if we trade to #1.

Uh they said earlier on Fox 26, that they're "pursuing every avenue to get their target Brandon Roy."

Obviously only in your mind.
