Daryl Morey would cringe if he read this. First, I'm not talking about total points - those can be inflated by minutes and increased shot attempts. I'm talking about shot efficiency. Keep in mind: Luther Head practically was on the Raps this past season. He played 29 minutes a night for a garbage team that won 7 more games than Toronto. Head: 40.3% field - 36.1% three - 69.9% free throw James: 46.9% field - 44.2% three - 83.7% free throw How can you explain his numbers as compared to James'? It can't be because Luther didn't have any help to free him up because you're telling me being on a bad team is supposed to help the percentages. thacabbage already said it beautifully, but percentages are not the same as padded numbers. The fact that he played for a bad team does not discount his percentages -- particularly from long range. You could make a case for the system increasing his percentages, ala Quentin Richardson in Phoenix (then crashing in New York) or Brent Barry in Seattle (then crashing in San Antonio), but not the losses. Besides, the improved percentages in Toronto were just the icing ... we already know that Mike James is one year removed from having hit over 39% of his threes on a Rockets team pretty gosh darn similar. And you would pass on James because we have Keith Bogans ... Keith Bogans? Bogans was just hideous offensively -- and he played heavy minutes in Houston. His percentage from the floor was the same as Mike James' 3-pt percentage in Houston... if you took Bogans from inside the arc -- layups and all -- he shot as well as James did from THREE-BALL this year in Toronto. You'd be better off benching Gehrig and playing Pipp. James would be brought in as a legit third scorer -- Bogans is just dime-a-dozen filler right now. If Bogans is back with the same game and is anything more than a 15 minute a night defender off the bench, I think the plan has gone horribly wrong. This has recently been debunked as myth and I'll leave it at that.
Clutch, your concern is a HUGE concern. MJ thinks way too much of himself and that is a problem. He has skills that we need but he is a frustrating player to have. He did OK against the Mavs, especially compared to our crippled old men named Sura and Wesley who were broken down. But remember his whole body of work. He missed so many wide open jumpers during the season I lost track. Then there were games where he took stupid shots and hit them. Other times he would make completely bone-headed plays near the end of games. This is why I only want him back as a 6th man with a clearly defined role on the team. When he's hot or when he's getting good pressure on the opposing PG without fouling him 3 times in one minute, he gets minutes. When he misses 4 straight jumpers without passing the ball, he sits. To say he's the most overrated player in this forum's history may be a stretch. But too many people here seem to only remember his good games and not his bad ones.
If JVG and TMac say they are OK with resigning him, I'm fine with it. But lets see if they actually do sign him. Granted, he played with a big chip on his shoulder and had a monster season. On another note, I would try to lure the Mavs in a Swift for M.Daniels trade. They really needed shotblockers in the playoffs and Swift fits the bill. I thought Daniels was huge in game 6 of the finals and kept them in it singlehandedly in the 3rd quarter, but Avery felt the need to bench him in the forth. I remember thinking, what a bad move for Avery. Anyway, both players seem to be in the "dog house" so to speak, and could use a fresh start.
I don't disagree with you A_3PO, but if James has stated he wants to be back in Houston couple with the fact that we have Yao and TMac, he HAS to know he'll be a 3rd option at best. I'm sure he's smart enough or have enough common sense to know that's the role he would play if he were to be a Rocket again. With this in mind, I think he would be content being a 3rd or 4th option as long as he's paid. There's no point of stating publicly that he wants to be back in Houston if he didn't already know he won't be "the man". Because he could say "I want to play for the Hawks. That's where I'll shine" and easily go to a bottom feeder team to continue to try and be "the man".
Mike James averaged 1.31 points per shot attempt last season, whichi is quite good. A lot of seasons that would be in the top five in the NBA, but with the spike in FT attempts this season, he's probably not in the top 30. Still, among guards, he's right there. Kobe averaged 1.30 points per shot attempt this season. T-Mac, 1.13 Rafer Alston, 1.03. Horrid. Probably among the league's worst. Head, 1.12
He could be using us as leverage to get a fat contract without ever really having any intention of playing here. I remember when he was asked if he'd sign here for the MLE, he was very noncomittal and would avoid answering it. This could mean nothing or it could be his agent telling him to use us to start the bidding at the MLE range.
I find this to be very strange. Can they get Mike James cheaper than they can re-sign Terry? That's all that makes sense to me. Personally, I'd rather have Jason Terry than Mike James and I just can't imagine they plan to have both. Though, interestingly enough, I think the Mavericks are one of the very few teams that could benifit from how highly Mike James thinks of himself. Nowitski certainly doesn't want to the ball in his hands in the clutch. If the Mavericks are letting Terry go (which seems unfathomable to me), I hope to god that CD at least calls his agent and offers the MLE. I can't imagine he'd take it, but can you imagine his shooting added to a core of Yao and McGrady?
Come on. He doesn't need to do that in order to start the bidding at the MLE. He's going to get that amount somewhere, from some team. The market is pretty clear on things. For what James brings to the table from the guard position and for the fact that every team has the MLE or cap space equal to or exceeding it, means he'll get that offer from somewhere regardless of whether he hints here or not.
Isn't it ironic that the reason we traded him was to bring in a more traditional PG. Now we have that and he turns into a legitamently selfish PG that looks to score more and we want him back??
SO, help me with this trade exception scenario. If we are able to get a big enough trade exception to trade for James new contract, what is the incentive for Toronto to S&T him to us instead of letting him walk? Wouldn't we have to throw them another assett, either a pick or a player or take some trash off their roster? Why would they want to do a S&T straight up for James instead of him just walking? I'm a little confused about the cap situation here.
We won't have to wait long to find out. July 1st is Saturday. If the Rockets want MJ at the MLE and that's acceptable to him, it shouldn't take long to reach an agreement and for MJ's agent to announce something. If the Rockets don't pursue him at the beginning, I doubt he comes here. So the suspense shouldn't last long.
Precisely. It doesn't make sense. I'm not even concerned. If James signs here, people on this board will wish for his dismissal as soon as January 07. Exactly. People seem to remember the good games out of convenience. Well, Wesley shot around there from 3 this season, is a better passer and more heady player, and is also a better defender. He also doesn't ruin the flow of a team's offense. I seriously think this is the case, which is why I think we're arguing over nada. So the Rockets trade James because he said he expects a fat contract the next summer, and now you're telling me James wisened up---after a career year, mind you--and wants the MLE??? Either Rockets fans are gullible or if this happens, James will be one of the more honest and noble athletes in sports. And Clutch, your primary concern with James will, hopefully, be the reason why the Rockets dont go after him.
The question can't be rubber-stamp answered. It's a series of if-then-else qualifiers. If the cap goes up substantially, and TOR is willing to give up their MLE and trade exception, then they have cap space to SnT James w/o BYC implications. If they use cap space to SnT Mike James, then are the player(s) they are offered desirable to them? If not, is the other team willing to take on the contract of Alvin Williams and/or offering future draft picks? If the cap does not go up substantially, then the ability of another team to take on Alvin Williams becomes of paramount importance to TOR operating under the cap. If the cap does not go up substantially, then a SnT of anything > 4.1M makes James a BYC player. If Mike James is SnT'd for $6M, his outgoing value to TOR is $3M. So we are finally down to this... If the Raps are forced to SnT James as BYC and if the other team offers a player TOR wants, then a third team will have to be involved to take some of the of the Raps salary. This final scenario IMO comes down to whether TOR can peddle Alvin Williams to CHI, ATL or CHA or whether TOR desires the incoming player(s) (and possibly picks) for James that they'd part with Joey Graham and Kris Humphies to teams with trade acceptions so they can overcome the BYC situation.
can we worry about getting the best possible talent before we start worrying about team chemistry. this team ain't been out of the first round of the playoffs and some of you are worrying about players stepping on each other's toes. you have to crawl before you walk. worry about championship chemistry when you have a championship team.
*lol* you could say that about any player in the league H*ll . . . how many ridiculous shots T-mac threw up that went in that is why he is T-mac Rocket River
Jason's definitely staying unless he gets a ridiculous offer which I doubt is gonna happen. Concerning the depth charts, Mike James is only going to take Daniels' spot at the back-up SG slot so there's not exactly a logjam. This gives Dallas two guys (Stack the other) that could turn on the switch and explode for 20+ at any given night which is scary. He's also insurance given that Harris and Stack are horribly injury prone. What's more interesting is that it's apparently a "package" from Toronto. Fans speculate that it's Graham, so it's an even better deal.
I don't see how a guy who thinks of himself as an MVP candidate is going to be convinced to play limited minutes off the bench - and I don't see how the Mavericks can give him much more than limited minutes off of the bench if they keep Jason Terry. Jason Terry, Devin Harris, Mike James and Jerry Stackhouse. I just don't see how there is enough minutes to keep all of those guys happy. Marquis Daniels logged about 28 minutes per game and Devin Harris logged about 22 minutes per game. Stackhouse logged 27 minutes per game. Clearly, I can't say with any certainty how many minutes it'll take to keep James happy, but I would imagine it'd be in the thirties. Not to mention, he'll want to be in the game in key situations. I honestly just don't know how he'll be made happy if he isn't the starter - and I can't imagine he can be a starter if Jason Terry is your starting point guard.
Totally agree! Dayum, people! Say to yourself over and over: "34 wins, 34 wins, 34 wins..." We need all the help we can get- James, the draft pick, perhaps a free agent signing, etc. I mean, who on our current roster is really worth something? Yao, T-Mac, Alston (yes, he's going to bounce back this year), maybe Swift. This is NOT going to get it done against SA, Dallas, Phoenix, and the Clippers. I say, welcome back, MJ!
One of the first times i really agree with you on something. I think you've made a great point here...
