My kids can watch it on my DVD player with the busted play button.

The last part sounds like an embarrassing way to get electrocuted.

Dude, if there are people who are defined by their dvd collection or whose dvd collections are the centerpiece of their bedroom...

Well. I don't want to know those people.

    Agreed on lower failure rates.

I think backwards compatability is a wash. Percentage-wise I think it's about the same % of each console's library that's BC. Also, is it just the 40 GB PS3 that doesnt BC? I thought it was that only 1 out of the 3 PS3 SKU's has BC?

Better upscaling? I don't know what you mean by this one. Please explain.

Handful of really good exclusives? A wash? 360 has "quality exclusives" as well.

BR is the PS3 "killer app" in the same way online interactivity/play is the 360's, the same way jumping around like a crazed monkey to play a game is the Wii's. To me those are each consoles differentiating advantage.

    SamFisher and Drexlerfan22,

I had a dream last night. I dreamed that I was a dove soaring in the sky. Then, I dove into the ocean and swam with the dolphins. What does it mean?

It means I see you guys coming together as life-long friends basking in the hi-def glory regardless of console/stand-alone preference.

And, don't ask me where I got my weed.

40GB is actually the only one that has no PS2 BC, though it still has PS1 BC IIRC.

The 80GB model has software emulation, and is 80% compatible-ish.

The 60GB model has near 100% BC (this is the model I have)

So if you're talking about the 60GB, PS3 clearly wins hands-down.

If you're talking about the 80GB, I'm not sure... 360 might have finally gotten its BC up that high. Haven't checked lately. All I remember is that my brother was really pissed at all the Xbox games he couldn't play on his 360 when he bought it (I know they've since added Panzer Dragoon Orta, which was his #1 priority).

By "upscaling," I mean upscaling standard-quality DVDs for viewing on an HD screen. Most would agree the PS3 does a better job with this than the 360. The PS3 also does a pretty good job of upscaling PS2/PS1 games to HD.

I never said it was a wash, actually, if you re-read my post. It's pretty clear to me that the 360 has more quality exclusives than the PS3. Though for me personally, since I have Gears of War on the PC, there are more PS3 exclusives that I myself care about. That's just personal preference. I would assume from a pure gaming standpoint, more people would go for the 360. All I was saying was that there are at least a few really good games you can only get on the PS3, not that there were as many as the 360 has.

Truth. Couldn't agree more. There are other various advantages/disadvantages for each, but those are the biggies.

Drexlerfan22 I bet you will cry yourself to sleep when you find out this TID BIT o'info.

Austin Drexler, Glides kid, was a freshman at St Thomas High when I was a senior and due to track we have kept in touch. His daddy dearest bought him a 360, they currently have two. One for his room other for the entertainment area. They are a PS3 Free household. I wish I can return my PS3 a waste of 600. I shoulda donated that money to the poor, better yet, fill socks with coins and beat homeless people with it. Then leave the sack full of coins next to their smelly, beer breathed bleeding head as payment for their trouble.

    I bet I don't care what Clyde's kid's game preferences are.

I also bet that you're strategically not replying to post #79 in this thread because you know you don't have an intelligible response.

Fine if you want me to reply to this wall of txt I shall do this.
Let me start by saying I was a PS2 lover to the CORE last time around. I didt not touch the Xbox at all nor the Cube. I have nothing against the PS3 nor the Playstation family of systems. What I do have however is a strong dislike for the Sony Corporation in how they handled the PS3 and I am glad their machine is selling like feces.

Sony Corporation is a cocky devilish swine b*stard out of all three of these. First they claim their system is more powerful: False. It is a draw. Where the Xbox 360 lacks in overall processing power they make up for it in unified floating RAM +10mb RAM for HDR + AA capabilities *something the PS3 CANNOT do* and a stronger semi-DX10 graphics card. The PS3 has the CELL processor but the limitations are that it is the harder architecture to program for. They have dedicated 256 + 256 RAM that cannot be allocated where needed and its graphics card is built on the RSX system. "the RSX can process 24 pixels with its 24 pipelines while an Xbox 360 powered with ATI's Xenos, R500 chip can do double that, 48 pixels per clock."

Next Sony disgrace: In 05 Sony publicly lambasted Microsoft for having TWO SKU's saying it will confuse the customer, why not have one machine they said. Flash forward to 2008. The PS3 has had HOW MANY SKUs? Last I count 4 + 2 more on the way. 20 gig, 80 gig, 60 gig, 40 gig. Nice hypocrisies there.

Next Sony failure: Upon release of the 360 the Sony talking heads also mocked the 360 for having software emulated BC, not "true BC" like the PS3 has. Flash forward to 2007, in a "cost cutting" move they remove the EE that allows TRUE BC, now relying on Emulated BC, the SAME thing they had mocked the Xbox 360 for. Nice hypocrisies there.

Rumble. OH MAN what a disaster. Sony says "Rumble is an outdated feature" and fails to include it on their controllers. Flash forward to 2008. DualShock 3 is released. Nice way to incorporate a supposed out dated, unwanted feature back into your controller.

SIXAXIS: Stealing the Wii's idea of motion control and trying to pull it off as an original concept. No game has, or ever will, use that controller for anything worth while.

Failure to include a unified Internet system. Cannot use the Playstation Guide in the middle of playing games. Hard to program for. False advertising using Pre-Rendered CGI to advertise supposed using "in game" footage. Like here.

I have a PS3 for the blu-ray player and nothing else. The PS3 has nothing to offer someone with a 360.

...besides the lower failure rate and the good exclusives that you not only can't get on the 360, but you can't get them on the PC either (unlike Gears).

And if you DON'T already own a 360, I don't see how you can lambast the PS3 for being a terrible system. The graphical/framerate differences on non-exclusive games are so slight that it ultimately doesn't really matter.

And that's the perspective I'm coming from: people who choose ONE system. Not everyone is so obsessed with games that they feel the need to flush $450 down the drain for a product which is extremely similar to something they already have. And if I have to make the choice, I'm gonna go with the one that not only is a good gaming system, but a good next-gen media player as well. It's called being efficient with my hard-earned money. Not to mention it's the only place I'll ever get to play Tekken 6. That be a system-seller for me.

Man all you Sony Lovers/Microsoft haters and Microsoft lovers/Sony haters need to give it up and get over it. All of you are just acting like angry nerds comparing the size of their wee-wees

Focus on what you have in common, like the love for fun video games and the rockets.

So people actually have MORE money to blow on a PC than on a 350 dollar Xbox? Id rather pay 350 bones then build a rig capable of playing the 360 PC games that will cost me at least 600 just for the graphics card alone.

If I were a new buyer I would Choose the 360 for these reasons: More games NOW. Upgradeable system, if you want a blu-ray player in the future one is being released shortly. DVDs arent quite out of style. Better online and unified guide and friends list, imagine voice chatting with your friends while you play a game, or txting them, something you cannot do on the PS3. Issues with the RROD are being fixed. If you want I will go into details to exactly why the RROD occur, its an issue that is dependent on a few factors. Capable of 1080p over DVI, they wont force you to use HDMI for 1080p, however newer Pro and Elite systems have the HDMI jack. Upscalling DVDs are just a good on the PS3 as it is on the XBOX however. DivX and other media being able to be used, aswell as Ipod connectivity IN GAME, also many games allow for unique soundtracks to play off of ripped music on your hard drive. XBLArcade actually have some great games to play. Downloading Demos and movies and files from the internet via Marketplace and soon to be Homebrews to be downloaded much like on the WiiWare.

Pick the Xbox, cant go wrong.

You have your reasons, I have mine, which have already been stated. I happened to already have a nice PC, being an IT guy who also likes to dabble in video editing. So why should I plop down $450 for a 360 Elite when Lost Odyssey is practically all I'd get out of it?

I certainly find it amusing though that you readily admit that you "strongly" dislike Sony, and that you think they're "cocky devilish swine bastards." I have no such feelings towards Microsoft. I find it amusing that anyone thinks I do. Judge the systems on their merits, not on your feelings towards the company.

Yes I do judge the system by its merits. Its merits are this: It has nothing to offer over the X360 rather than BR. Blu-ray is not end all be all in anything. I myself have a monster rig. 4GB Ram in 1:1 Ratio. E6600 OC'd to 3.2. 2 8800GTX Ultras, 1080p 37inch Monitor so I am pretty well off when it comes to electronics.

Also SONY thought people would buy their system just because they owned a PS2 last time around. the Xbox destroyed the PS3 in sales over Black Friday-Through Christmas even with a similar price point.

But neither have sold anything like the Wii.

...besides the lower failure rate and the good exclusives that you not only can't get on the 360, but you can't get them on the PC either (unlike Gears). Why are you so uncomfortable admitting these things? They are undisputable FACTS, and they are obviously things the PS3 has over the 360.

And now I'm officially repeating myself. Saying the PS3 has *nothing* on the 360 besides Blu-Ray simply isn't true (see above). Lower failure rates matters. Uncharted matters. Ratchet and Clank matters. MGS4 matters. Tekken 6 matters. FF13 matters. And I know three of those are in the future, but even the fact that a system will *eventually* get Tekken 6 is enough to make me buy it.

And you act like Blu-Ray functionality is no big deal. To me, it is. It's a bigger deal than anything the 360 has to offer. And once I have that, all the 360 has to offer me that I care about is Lost Odyssey and a controller that's better for shooters. Not worth my hard-earned $450.

I have no problem with people saying they prefer a 360 to a PS3. Fine. What annoys me is people who ignore facts.

Which facts? Oh heh i get it! The failure rates! YEA! How about them? More importantly, WHAT about them? So what, it happens to break sometimes. So what? That should not deter you from buying a system based soley on the probability it could break on you. If that was the case no one should have purchased a PS2.

Exclusives: Heres where things get shady. Does the PS3 have good exclusives? Sure. But then again they are rehashes of old crap the PS2 had. Lets loook at the things you mentioned.

Ratchet & Clank: Should be number 4 in the series.
MGS4- Number 4 again in the series.
    FF13- the 13th installment of a game.
Tekken 6- Nothing new to see here. Same fighting game as the others just beefed up graphics.

If those things matter to you then you love the same things over and over and over. Atleast the Xbox this year has exclusives that are not quite the 15th version of the original.

the PS2 had many advantages the PS3 doesn't. Namely 3rd party complete support, innovation, and seemingly insurmountable genres of games.
The Xbox 360 now has a few of those advantages this time around. Capcom, Epic, Rockstar games have shown a small preference to the Xbox and first party M$ games arent doing too bad in their own right. An innovative online distribution center along with varied and spread out types of games put the xbox over the hump. If blu-ray is so important to you then youre gaming for the wrong reasons.

A media delivery device should be the last thing someone cares about while choosing a GAME system.

Tell my brother "so what" on the failure rates. He was counting the days before DMC4 for a YEAR before it came out. Then his 360 breaks for the third time the second he puts it in. Now he's gotta wait what, 3 more weeks? He's piiiiiisssssed.

Wow, you're arguing over sequels and originals now? At least they're not all FPSs. I like FPSs a lot, but there are so many good ones these days I find it very hard to care. Like I said, I'd love to play Lost Odyssey. That's about it.

"Gaming for the wrong reasons?" Look: I bought the PS3 because it could upscale all my old PS2 games, and it has Tekken 6. And the fact that it supports Blu-Ray is a HUUUUUGE cost-efficiency bonus that I didn't realize at the time, but now I'm very happy about it. I had valid reasons to pick the PS3.

And why is it so wrong to consider OTHER things the game system can do other than play games? Did I offend the videogame gods or something?

...and did you never consider that since MS offers a "core" system, they can't build hard-drive caching into their game designs? And since it doesn't natively support Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, they end up with more compressed and/or multi-disc games? It's not impossible that becomes an issue down the line.
