The pound of flesh would be Banks' salary? $4.8mill per season through 2011?? Marion is flat out not working at the Heat, and they want something bigger so they can get Beasley on the court playing the way they want him to. JO isn't anywhere close to what he used to be - but could he come in and give the Heat 13-7? Most likely (but only for 62 games a season...) Miami would then be BIG TIME players in the 2010 sweepstakes (no guaranteed contracts - unless Wade takes up his $17mill option - which one thinks they'd be happy about?) You'd think they also pick up Beasley and Chalmers' options - so put them at $23mill plus whatever rookies they acquire - not a bad spot to be in if you're looking to that summer as 'the building day!' I'm actually not sure how much sense it makes for Toronto... They don't look like making the playoffs this season, Marion may well walk - then they're stuck with Banks' deal, and only about $5-6mill in cap space for next summer, and $4.8mill LESS than they would have had for 2010. Unless they are just desperate to unload O'Neal?
ah i failed to see the player option. yes, of course in that case he is going to pick up the final $23M.
As long as Pat Riley is in charge of the Heat, they will never sacrifice an entire season looking to the future, which is what they would do by taking JO's albatross of a contract for next year. If I was to bet at how many games he plays in 09/10, try 40-50 at best and he will be worthless by the end of the season. If Toronto misses the playoffs as expected, the pressure on Colangelo will be high for next season. I'd say he is desperate to unload JO and shake up that pillowsoft team sooner than later. In fact, he's publicly said he's looking for trades (but not mentioning JO in particular)
If there's one situation that I would consider to be "perfect" for Marion, it would be Philadelphia. He really fits that style of play.
I think the Kings can get a lot more Kevin Martin than Shawn Marion. Kev Martin is only 25 and he's got a lot of trade value which is why I can understand if he's on the block. He's one of my favorite players but he's pretty one-dimensional. A prolific scorer and he gets to the line well but that's pretty much it. If he is indeed on the blocks I wouldn't be shocked because the Kings have a similar but definitely not nearly as good a player in Francisco Garcia and John Salmons who's also a natural 2 guard playing SF. I'd go after a stud PF or starting PG but a 30 year old Marion is simply not a good trade for the Kings.
Not unless the 76ers get rid of Iggy's monster contract or Thaddeus Young who's still on his rookie contract. One will be hard to move and the other I simply don't think Philly will want to move. Marion, AI, Thaddeus Young are all extremely similar.
I actually think Marion would suit the Clippers the best...but of course they would need to get rid of Randolph or Thornton to make room (and the latter would make no sense).
Sacramento is stupid if they make this deal, if it goes down it will be up there with the gasol trade.
Would be an amazing deal for the Raptors. Marion would make up for Bargnanis relatively weak rebounding and would make their front court quite imposing. IF JO stays in Toronto, he is completely hindering Andreas development. Bargs has shown that he can be quite a player and it would not surprise me in the least if he averaged 18-20 ppg and 8-9 rebounds next year.
[Yahoo] J O'Neal to Miami for Marion? http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_y...F?slug=aw-onealheat011709&prov=yhoo&type=lgns As Jermaine O’Neal and his troublesome right knee returned to the Toronto lineup on Friday night, perhaps no one studied the Toronto Raptors center more closely than Pat Riley. The Miami Heat president has been seriously considering a trade package for O’Neal that would send Shawn Marion to Toronto, multiple league sources said. Yet Riley first needs to see O’Neal’s progress before he’ll make the leap of faith on a trade. Nevertheless, O’Neal, 30, was telling league associates as recently as Friday that he believes there’s a good chance he’ll end up in Miami. “If he’s healthy,” one source close to O’Neal said Friday, “it could very well happen.” League executives say that Riley has been determined to make a deal for a center, and has had substantive talks with Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo. No GM has seemed more determined to overhaul his team than Colangelo, and several league executives say he won’t hesitate to take Marion – whom he drafted in Phoenix – and his expiring $17.1 million contract for O’Neal. Miami would need to include another player, or two, to make the salaries match. O’Neal makes $21.3 million this season, and has a player’s option for $23 million for the next season. Colangelo has been willing to move everyone on his roster but Chris Bosh, Jose Calderon and Andrea Bargnani. In fact, the emergence of Bargnani, the 2006 No. 1 overall pick, has made an even stronger case for moving O’Neal. Before returning to the struggling Raptors on Friday, O’Neal had missed nine straight games with a sore right knee. He’s averaging 14 points and 7.2 rebounds a game. For Miami, the core choice is difficult: How much does the 7-footer have left in that battered body? The Heat had been believed to be a favored destination for Utah’s Carlos Boozer, but there are increasing questions about Boozer’s appeal because he has knee problems of his own. Riley “doesn’t seem as interested in cap space this summer,” said a rival executive who exchanged trade proposals with him recently. “He just seems concerned with having space in 2010.” The Feb. 19 trade deadline is looming.
Just from a positional standpoint, the Raptors could use a wing player and the Heat could use a big. The Raptors could slide Parker to the 2 and let Marion be the starting SF. Moon, Kapono and Graham will back up the wing positions. For the Heat, O'Neal can play C, Haslem can move back to his natural postion of PF and Beasley can get more PT at SF with Marion out of the way.
I would be very excited for the Raptors if this trade were to happen! Marion would be a tremendous upgrade over O'Neal. Miami would be getting raped here.
I stand corrected if this is true and Riles makes the trade. I'll have the same feeling about them as the Raptors: They are making a big mistake. JO just isn't worth the trouble but maybe betting the farm on 2010 ends up being worth it for the Heat. They might have a legit shot at keeping Wade AND signing another superstar.
If he’s healthy,” one source close to O’Neal said Friday, “it could very well happen.” It won't happen then.
The recent concerns regarding Carlos Boozer may have a lot to do with this change in philosophy, perhaps?
