Rumor: Chris Paul doesn’t plan on taking paycut for Rockets

Because they kept asking for extra ****, like Capela or Gordon, or draft picks. Carmelo wasn't worth a cent more than Anderson and Anderson alone. Lebron on the other hand, take our draft picks, take them all, and you can have Gordon too.

 

I'm not panicking about this news because CP3 isn't stupid. He knows he was one injury away from the championship and there's no better team outside of Houston and Warriors that can give him that. Yes, other teams have superstars too but as a whole, Houston and Golden State are on that next level. It's about chemistry and coaching and this team has it all. A serious contender won't have to cap space to pay him the supermax. If he cares more about money than the ring, then he can make supermax on a losing team. He knows his best chance in the next 1-2 years is with Houston. Morey has leverage and if he walks, we'll find great role players with that money or go all out on LeBron. I'm not worried at all.

As a matter of fact, maybe Morey even leaked this news out to Woj to put mental pressure on CP3. It's time to play the chess game.

What exactly is a pay cut to him? Anything less than the absolute max? Can it be considered a pay cut if no one in the market is actually gonna offer that to him?

That may be true. But if you look at it from CP3's perspective, with us, he got as close to the ring as he will ever get. Yes, we can sit here and argue if he didn't get injured, we might've gone to the Finals. But these what ifs don't mean anything at this point. The point is, he needs us more than we need him. The talent level of the Warriors is so high, anything less than us, is not going to get him closer to the ring. He knows it. Which is why Morey can use this as leverage to negotiate with him.

 

I’m just saying, if CP absolutely wants the max and is recruiting Lebron. I don’t see how he wants the max when he knows that will make the job for Morey to be even incredibly harder if he goes for the max.

 

Definitely not worth the max given his age and injury history. Dude missed a quarter of last season and got injured at the most critical time when we were on the verge of going to the Finals. Would be a mistake to max the guy.

 

I think 30 mil a year to get Lebron here is a win all the way around. How much money can you have?

We should gauge market interest to see if anyone will actually try and sign him to a max.

I think the ideal deal would be him taking a max 3 year contract instead of 5 years.

Having said that, if cp3 demands a full max, Houston should offer it. We are operating over the cap, it means we can't replace CP3 with a similar player if we lose him. Not to mention that we are in win mode right now, who knows when we will be in this position again so even though it will hurt to pay 40+ million to a 37 years old player, it's the price to pay to win now.

 

Well its Tillman paying for these contracts and of course in turn some of that will be the fans for tickets and all, but I am hoping more than Paul takes a max deal with shorter years vs the 5 year max. I think the 5 year max can be bad for this team down the road in 3-4 years, but again if it means we can still keep Capela and somehow work LeBron in well IMO you do it.

I mean all this future flexibility and all is nonsense if you have a window to legitimately win a championship now you do it. The Rockets have that small window right now and when was the last time they realistically did? 1997? Thats 21 years ago. I would be more than happy to go through 5-6 years of mediocrity or worse if it meant another championship. You think Mavs fans care about the team being mediocre/sucking the last few years? Of course not they got theirs in 2011. Nothing is guaranteed at all. OKC looked to be a potential dynasty 5 years ago and now they are probably mediocre with only 1 finals trip to show for it. These windows are super small and rare you take your shots when you can.

 

Here is the thing about CP's contract. I am sure Morey has laid out a number of financial scenarios to CP. But each scenario might come with a "cost" of not having X amount of resources to add talent to the team for a run at a championship(s).

So then, CP gets to make the choice on what financial deal he wants and weigh that with his intense competitive drive for a title.

Is it 5 years max? Is it 3 years at max dollars? Is it 5 years but not at max level? Another scenario? Each one comes with an opportunity cost.

All of this will be laid out for CP.

And he saw this first hand already last year with the opt in and trade that allowed the team resources to get PJ Tucker. And you see what effect that had.

 

He's the head of the players union - he can't take a cut.

 

CP3's season was at worst "as expected" with the Rockets. At worst, as expected performance, as expected health. Would have been great if he stayed healthy for the whole playoffs... but that shouldn't have been expected.

That being the case, whatever he's getting paid this offseason is likely whatever they agreed to a year ago.

Rockets can't "renege" on whatever verbal "promises" they made.

CP3 takes a paycut for a superstar to join him. Seems about it...

 

only if we get Lebron, if we don't we will be screwed for the next half a decade. considering CP only plays half a season now. Imagine his knees and legs in 4 years time.
