A source with knowledge of negotiations between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Phoenix Suns says the teams have agreed to a deal involving NBA All-Star forward Amar'e Stoudemire. The Cavaliers would obtain Stoudemire, 26, in exchange for forward Wally Szczberiak and guard J.J. Hickson, as well as a draft pick. The source says the deal is in place but will be announced following Sunday's NBA All-Star game, which will be held Sunday in Phoenix at 8 p.m. EST. Stoudemire is averaging 21 points per game for the Suns in 51 games this season but has reportedly been unhappy with his role on the team since the departure of coach Mike D'Antoni after last season. D'Antoni now coaches the New York Knicks, who have been rumored to be in trade discussions for Stoudemire as well. Szczerbiak, 31, is averaging 7.4 points per game in the final year of his current contract. Hickson is under contract through the 2009-10 season. Lebron+Amare+MoWill with players like Delonte-BigZ-BigBen-Varejao is a dynasty which Lebron wants. What a bust for Knicks, haha!
Wow! Can anyone say MJ, I mean LJ has his new Scottie Pippen to play with, assuming the 'rumor' is true.
Crazy if true. Hickson is OK and might give Cleveland the option of letting Varejao walk this summer, but as the "young, star player" the Suns wanted packaged in return for Amare he falls short. I don't see how this deal gets done unless Amare's value around the NBA is even less than what I thought.
'Old' news. The RealCavsFans board is still going nuts with Amare speculation on a 500 page thread. It was around 200 last night, right after the all star game finished, before I realized that I had a life and stopped reading. There are a few main lines of thought there: - Chicago is the front runner (Broussard had a detailed tidbit) - Cleveland is the front runner (reputable inside source on the board) - Cleveland was rejected because they wouldn't include an unamed player in that deal (probably Varejao, or possibly Delonte) - give it up, Amare is staying put
Yahoo says the deal isn't happening. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_y...g=aw-stoudemirecavs021309&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
Hilarious. The Suns' GM would be tarred and feathered if all he got in exchange for Amare was a scrub and an expiring. The Chicago deal makes the most sense, since at least Tyrus Thomas has some upside.
People are now overrating expiring contracts because of the Pau trade. Wally & LaFrentz are worthless. If T-Mac is what he is now next season his expiring contract will be the same.
They aren't worthless. They have great value, but you just have to be able to tack in some young talent to make the deal worthwhile. Cleveland has none of that.
Varejao would not stop me from getting Amare, especially when the Cavs desperately need to do something to keep LeBron there.
