Did you just imply that the Titans are going to the Superbowl next season? Mathis... He returned to practice yesterday and hardly even practiced, so this does seem strange. His MRI came back clean, yet I'm hearing he's done for the season. Oh well... I'm glad we got Dexter Wynn on this team. He probably isn't going to score any TDs but he will get you good field position.
I would have said: "Hey Jerome, man I bet that hurts... So how's Andre's knee feeling?" j/k, sux that he'll be out, with a dynamic duo on Special Teams you always have that chance to beat a better team.
A team would have been crazy to give us anything for him. Mathis is barely an NFL player because of his injuries and the fact he is only good enough for special teams. The most we could have gotten for him was a future 7th rounder.
http://www.myfoxhouston.com/myfox/p...n=3&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=6.1.1 Texans May Place Mathis on Injured Reserved HOUSTON -- It's expected the Houston Texans will place Jerome Mathis -- former all-pro kick returner and part-time receiver -- on injured reserve, which means he will not be able play again for the rest of the season. Two weeks ago, against the Indianapolis Colts, Mathis returned the opening kick for a touchdown. Since then he's been bothered by a sore leg. A battery of tests this week now show he has what appears to be a stress fracture in his left leg. "It's in the early stages of forming into a stress fracture," Mathis said after practice Friday. "The bone hasn't broken at all, just a little bit of fluid in there." Mathis says he doesn't experience any pain in every day life. That is not the case on the football field. "Oh yea it's very painful," Mathis said. "I have a hard time stopping, just pushing off and after that I have a hard time walking around for a couple of hours." Because the Texans have so many injuries to their receivers, they no longer have the luxury of waiting on Mathis to get healthy. That's why it's expected he will be placed on injured reserve. "Most peole look at it, they question my toughness or my ability to stay out on the field healthy," Mathis said. "That's not a question. None of that's a factor. I want to be out there more than anything." Texans officials will only say that injured reserve is an option for Mathis and that a decision will be announced before Sunday's game. Mathis will be replaced on the roster this weekend by receiver Harry Williams, who is being signed off of the practice squad. Who? http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7416
It's official. Mathis is out for the season. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/5193805.html Oct. 6, 2007, 3:24PM Texans place receiver Mathis on injured reserve By JOHN MCCLAIN As expected, the Texans placed receiver Jerome Mathis on injured reserve Saturday and activated Harry Williams from the practice squad. Mathis suffered a stress fracture of his lower leg against Indianapolis. He won't be eligible to return this season. Williams signed with the Texans in the offseason and was with them until the second roster reduction. Then he was signed to the practice squad.
I think that this may just be it for Mathis in Houston. They'll hang onto him this year but I expect him to be cut or traded (good luck with that) before next season. Jacoby has taken his place in the return game and is a far better WR and you can expect Smith to add more talent next season which would make it even harder for a guy who is hurt all the time to stay on the roster.
I think you're right. We upgraded at many positions this past offseason. I look for Kubiak to find another WR or 2 to go with Mathis and AJ. Then again, another good game out of Andre Davis might cement his spot. More depth never hurt anyone. Mathis is a fantastic KR when he's on the field. He's proven to be too injury prone, though, and isn't at an important enough position to warrant his roster spot.
Dexter Wynn looked pretty darn good on kick returns yesterday. I was sitting in the end zone (near the bull pen) and it seems like he reads the holes pretty quickly and accurately. PS - the Texans cheerleaders are HOT!
