Rudy's Medical Condition: Diagnosed with bladder tumor

    In medical school I rotated with the Methodist urologists for a while, I'll try to help out.

    Rudy's disease puts him in the largest subgroup of newly diagnosed bladder cancer, superficial transitional cell carcinoma (TCC). This means the tumor(s) they found are either on the surface of the bladder wall (stage 0) or just underneath (stage 1). Treatment for these localized tumors (resection and fulguration... cut and burn) is often "curative," but the buzzwords for TCC are progression and recurrence.

    Rudy will also be receiving two, 6-week courses of intravesical (in the bladder) BCG (Attn: Mr. Feigen), which is a purified bacterial strain that enhances an immunologic response - think of it as a localized, semi-potent vaccine. His prognosis, while good, will depend on his response to this treatment and other factors, primarily tumor characteristics (size, #, differentiation).

    Overall, the team physician's optimism is justified and not just for the media. While this will certainly change his life (Not to be lost in this, cytoscopy is not the most pleasant procedure to endure), Rudy is fortunate to have his disease diagnosed at this stage, as further progression would have brought large differences in treatment (ie major surgery) and prognosis.

    Im glad to see that there are people supporting Rudy on this site. There was way too much bashing on this guys for as young as this team is.

    Get well Rudy. I have never stopped thinking how great of a coach you were and still are.

    God has nothing to do with Rudy's bladder or recovery.

    Lets just hope he gets better soon :)

    My thoughts and prayers go out to Rudy too. Would be a shame to lose him off the team like this. He bascially has lived 30 good years with Houston (both as a player and coach).

    That's, sadly, where you're wrong, my brotha. If anyone thanks anyone, it is God for giving the doctors the chance to find this tumor. And I pray the Lord gives these docs the wisdom to do everything possible to give Rudy a normal life.

    ...And get him back on the court!!

    God has a plan for everyone...you never know, maybe this debacle in Rudy's life will help another person in some way. I'm sure Rudy wants it to be like that.
