Do yourselves a favor, go to Beaumont and eat at Patillo's. It is a lot better than any corporate barbecue. The sausage is the best in the world, and the ribs and brisket are really good, too.

I've had better service at the one on 11th Street near St. Elizabeth Hospital, but the food at the one on Washington is just as good.

Good lord. You drove to OKC because u were bored?! Wow...I normally play game or something.

As for Rudy's, I agree with you 100%. I've been there like 3 or 4 times. First time, my ribs were dry....like beef jerky. The 2nd time was ok, the last time I went it was better. I had the brisket which is hit or miss it seems. Some times dry, sometimes nice and moist.

Yep. That was the place, although they didn't talk about their combo sandwich.

I have been to Rendezvous in Memphis, and they are damn good ribs. Personally, I think it is difficult to challenge ribs to brisket. They taste completely differerent, and it depends on what mood your in.

For example, people in Memphis have NO idea what a BBQ stuffed baked potato is.

If anyone is driving through Lufkin, try Stringer's BBQ. I guess it's been there forever, because my father used to go out of his way to stop at Stringer's on the way up to Grandpa's place outside of Quitman, and that was a long time ago. The BBQ is great and they have fried rolls that are to die for. Fried rolls may sound bizarre to some people, but you have to try them. Delicious! Must be an East Texas thing.

My Grandmother made fried rolls, and she called them "Indian Bread". Apparently a friend of hers who lived on the Alabama-Coushatta Reservation taught her the recipe. I was quite surprised when I found out that it wasn't a traditional Native American dish.

Isn't that sort of an oxymoron?

And they are delicious, done right. Stringer's does them right. It trips me out how different the regions of Texas are. We're lucky in that respect. East Texas is just, well, different. And not in a bad way. (ignoring certain cultural ideas still floating around from the Jurrasic Era)

Post on the thread whether they're still good, if you make it and don't mind. I haven't been through Lufkin in perhaps 10 years. It was still great back then.

Can't remember the place's name, but the best BBQ in the country is in Centerville, TX, right off the I-45.

He lives in the Metroplex...if you did, you would understand. ;)

Damnit...last week's steak thread got me in the mood for some steak, the kolache thread got me in the mood for some kolaches and donuts, now this thread got me in the mood for some BBQ. Hopefully, nobody starts a cheesecake thread, or I just might die...

If you are talking about Country Cousin's, I totally agree. A shack next door to a chevron. There is also a Woody's Smokehouse which is okay, but more popular.

Country Cousins has one of the best chopped beef sandwiches that I have ever had. Same with the potato salad and cobbler.

    Woody's is okay

    Awesome.

And Rudy´s is hardly a good representation of top-notch Texas ´cue.

Yes -- Jimes tipped us off that they opened yesterday at 4pm, so I took the family there tonight ... just got back.

As soon as I got out of the car, the Rudy's barbecue smell put me right back in Austin. Obviously it's Day 1 (or Day 2), so the people are inexperienced... still being trained as you order, etc. (The ones in Austin are pretty much well-oiled machines when you order). But since it's so early, the staff is incredibly nice. We must have had 4 or 5 people come by asking if we needed anything.

It's brand spanking new so it's very clean... very nice for a Rudy's. They have flat screen TVs mounted in a few places. Huge, long picnic tables in the middle/main room, then they have a long room going around that with big picnic tables and just all windows out to I-45 and Louetta.

They also have a drive-thru for pickup ... if they have that in Austin I didn't know about it.

I drive through Centerville all the time. I know the Chevron you're talking about. I've been to Woody's for their jerky, but never really ate there. I'll have to try this "Country Cousins" place. I can't remember ever seeing it there.
