I wonder if Rudy is going to stick with his "no coaching for 2 years" plan. Lakers would be an ideal job for him. But if he holds out for another year, there maybe more options- Detroit, Houston? Offseason Wishes 1. Get T-Mac 2. Bring Rudy Back 3. Sign Brent Barry or Fisher 4. Sign Eddie or McDyess
With the most dominant center in the league, Rudy would try to revert to the Hakeem days. I am sure that given Shaq's high esteem for Olajuwon, he would be a huge fan of having Rudy as coach. Which tells me that Kobe would probably be very much against it. For all the ISO that Rudy let Steve and Cat run, it was because they didn't have Shaq. Shaq changes everything, and Rudy would go back to what he won two championships with -- giving the ball to the big man and surrounding him with jump shooters. I just wonder how much the zone defense will limit its effectiveness this time around.
I got nothing but esteem for Rudy and wish him the best in whatever he does but I'm still not going to root for the Lakers even if Rudy is their coach. I'm a Rocket's fan and will not put another team over the Rockets, especially the Lakers, even if they had Rudy T at the helm, Hakeem in the middle, Clyde on the wing and Mario Elie taking clutch shots.
Another thing to think about... if Rudy goes to the Lakers, this makes them more of a player to garner Yao's services if he chooses to become a free agent. Who knows where Houston will be, in terms of development, after this year (the summer where Yao either signs an extension, or opts for FA). If we keep the nucleus intact, we might make it to the 2nd round of the playoffs. If we get T-mac, we could be very very good... but if there are injuries, we could suffer. Yao's agents, and the higher-ups at China no doubt want Yao to be happy... but they also want what's best for the country. I'm not going to lie just because I'm a Houstonian... Yao being in LA would be HUGE for them and him. I'm the slightest bit worried that this option may be too attractive not to pass up, regardless of whether or not Rudy is there. If he is there, however, this may sweeten the pot just enough to convince Yao to weigh his options.
I'll bet you a $1 (to the tip jar ) that EG signs on with LA if Rudy T paves the way. EG (just good enough if supremely determined) will bite us in the @ss.
would be good for Rudy, im not against him coachin another team.....even if it is the fakers......i hope he takes the job.
Yao will not become an unrestricted free agent for 3 years. While the rockets will most certainly offer him a max contract once his rookie contract expires, even if he doesn't agree to it he's a rocket. You've got 3rd year 4th year option (becomes restricted free agent, can match any offer) 5th year (Unrestricted Free Agent) I'm not worried about where Yao will be playing anytime in the near future.
Rudy can bring back Horry and get Carl Herrera back to the states and bail Vernon out of jail. That would be awesome!
If Rudy (one of my favorites coaches) is going to coach i hope is not LA because i hate LA, I want Rudy back!!!!!! Fire JVG
RT deserves better than that freak show. I think he'd be better suited in Dallas, if Cuban fires DN after next season.
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/8961387.htm?1c After four trips to the NBA Finals in his five years, Jackson was told the Lakers are ready to move on with another high-profile coach - two-time champion Rudy Tomjanovich is emerging as a lead candidate - to help Bryant continue the Lakers' tradition of excellence, Buss hopes. Tomjanovich, 55, stepped down in May 2003 as coach of the Houston Rockets because the stress of coaching after being diagnosed with bladder cancer could have worsened his health. He now feels strong and ready to return to the game. The Lakers made calls Friday night to initiate their coaching search. Tomjanovich is already attempting overtures to placate O'Neal in hopes he can coach Bryant and O'Neal together, as Jackson did. Jackson and Buss were nearing a contract extension at midseason - they were less than a million dollars apart on a deal that would have paid Jackson around $10 million - when the Lakers abruptly ended negotiations, taking a Bryant-guided road that ended for Jackson on Friday. Please dont go to LA, Rudy-T. There is no way I can root for the lakers. If the posters of the lakers' BBS represent the general laker fans, then most of them are idiots. They will blame everything on you if u dont win championship. And credits ONLY go to their Saint Kobe even if u win it. Kobe is a selfish hypocritical MJ wannabe who wants to do things only his way or no way. This job is not good for your health.
One player accused of rape. The No. 1 trash talker (Payton). The No. 1 dirty player (Malone). The self-proclaimed Zen Master who is an arrogant prick (Phil Jackson). The "Most Dominant Ever"... A guy who plays in the band "losing hair, but I put more slimy stuff on my head and think I look great" who is married to a formerly hot chick and ex-Miss America (?) Vanessa Williams. How can you not call LA a bigger freak show than Dallas?
The owner for Dallas worked at a Dairy Queen last year with a name tag reading Tony. That's a circus. He ships out players whenever he gets the urge.
Well, the word out of LA this morning is that the Lakers will most likely turn to Henry Bibby the UCLA head coach now that Jackson is officially out of the picture.
Whoops! Bibby coaches at USC and not UCLA (Doh!). ESPN.com is also reporting that the Lakers have also contacted Rudy T. Here's the link: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1824772 And the article: The Lakers have contacted Southern California coach Henry Bibby about coaching in Los Angeles next season and are believed to have contacted former Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich, ESPN's David Aldridge has learned. Phil Jackson stepped down as coach of the Lakers on Friday. Reached by telephone Friday afternoon, Bibby told Aldridge, "I'm at USC right now, and I'm here. I'm not at liberty to comment on anything right now." A spokesman for Buss said he would not have any public comment "for the foreseeable future." Bibby, 53, has coached at USC for eight seasons, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2001. He played in the NBA for nine seasons. He was on the New York Knicks' championship team as a rookie in 1973 and was the starting point guard on the 1976-77 Philadelphia 76ers team that lost in the NBA Finals to the Portland Trail Blazers. Bibby coached in the U.S. Basketball League, and his 1989 Tulsa Fast Breakers won the Continental Basketball Association title. He is the father of Sacramento Kings point guard Mike Bibby. Tomjanovich, who resigned as Rockets head coach during the 2002-03 season after being diagnosed with cancer, is under contract to Houston for two more years. Other potential candidates: Former Seattle SuperSonics and Milwaukee Bucks coach George Karl, and current Lakers assistants Jim Cleamons and Kurt Rambis. Jackson succeeded Rambis five years ago.
