Sorry, edc, my bad. I don't have any kind of IQ like Yao does. Put me in the same category of our guards, always have brain blockage problems. Thanks for the file.
I transcribed Smeg's segment for those that dont have audio: Charlie: A couple of more calls to get in, we start with a guy who may be paying 13 bucks a minute, so he goes first ….Joe in AUSTRALIA!!!! Rich: That’s not a small town in north Texas (trying to be funny as usual; fails miserably). Charlie: Australia joining us on Sports Radio 610. Well see if hes a fake or if the accent, we rule it legitimate (as if hes some type of foreign accent expert). Joe youre on the Rudy T show. G’day mate (obviously has all three Crocodile Dundee moves at home and watches them frequently). Smeg: How ya going tiger? (note: hard to understand what he said here) Rudy: (surprised) Hey, hows it goin? (laugh) Smeg: Good. Rudy: Good to hear from ya. Charlie: (cutting Rudy off) Where in Australia? Smeg: Uh, Adelaid Australia (sounding unsure, as if hes asking a question instead of stating a fact) Charlie: (as if hes giving in inquisition) Adelaid. And how are you a huge Rockets fan (i.e. arent there sports talk shows down under that you can call rather than us?)? Smeg: Ummmmm (voice cracking due to nervousness) just been a long fan (quit bragging about your manhood Smeg) for a long time and I listen to your show through some friends that make recordings for me. Charlie: Hmph (sounding a little ticked off that Smeg’s friends are bootlegging his show). Well, you are on with Rudy T so use your time wisely (i.e. make it quick, we dont like your kind and would rather talk to Howard in Memorial). Smeg: Uh, ok. I just first of all wanted to say a big thanks to Rudy and the Rockets organization Cuttino Mobley (sounding somewhat chipper) cause that means Ill be able to see him play in early April when I am visiting with my wife on our honeymoon. Charlie: Honeymooning at a Rockets game! He is a real fan! Rudy: Yeah he is a fan. (i.e. there are more exiciting things to do on your honeymoon than watching Steve dribble for 20 secs every possession) Smeg. Uh, ok. And heres my basketball question (chipper): Uh, just wanted to what …whether …Rudy thought that uh how much the opponent’s defenses contribute to our …the offenses inconsistency or is it more to do with the teams problems and learning curve. Rich: I am guessing you wont hang up and listen Joe (i.e. you are hogging up a line that Brad in Spring Branch needs to call in on). Smeg: Uh, probably not, no. (sounding a lil shocked that Rich doesn’t realize that 610s signal does not reach halfway around the world). Charlie: Well let you hold on for the response (i.e. as if Smeg should feel priveleged). Hey thanks for listening down there. Rudy: Rambles on, incoherently, blah blah blah Posey got it, now doesn’t get it ….Bullard ..the old days …we ISO less than any team in the league ……..Zone defenses We can be a better running team …spacing ….this team is amazing Later on…………. Charlie: Joe thanks for listening. Southern Hemisphere calls are uncommon. We much appreciate yours. (contradicting himself by sounding ungrateful) Later on …………… Charlie (being rushed to get in final comments with only seconds left in the show): That darn Austrailian guy (still pissed about Smeg’s friends violating the whole “express written consent rule”). Rich: That’s ok, its something different (a lil sad that he didnt get to ask Smeg if the toilet's really do swirl counter clockwise in Australia)
paraphrased, from what i can remember listening to the show driving home from work, sorry if i butcher it: Rudy's offensive philosophy is to get the ball into the hands of a guy that can draw a double team to force the defense to make a decision. If they don't double, then the guy should make them pay by taking his man one-on-one and scoring. If they double, pass the ball to the open man to find an open shot. In other words, "ISO-ball is the only offense i know" what kind of offense philosophy is that for this team? since we do not have jordan, wilt (from what i've read, too young to have seen), hakeem, or any other player that totally dominates all by himself, this is the wrong offense for this team. heck, even the lakers, who could play this way if they wanted to, with not one but two totally dominant players mind you, choose instead to be smarter and play team basketball. when rudy made these statements, and emphatically at that, i thought for sure that it would cause a feeding frenzy in here. i'm still wondering why i haven't seen it yet. have these particular comment by Rudy already been discussed?
go to around the 18:15 mark of edc's file to hear rudy answer a caller's (Bernard's) question and pretty much say that iso-ball is his offensive philosophy.
Damn, If I had any doubts about your fanaticism, they are kaid to rest for sure! Betcha thats one damn expensive conversation with the coach. LOL @ Codell's transcription.. I think if you remember that a true ISo in Rudy;s mind is when you clear everyone away from the ballhandler...no he didnt lie...SF,CM and Mo may take their(try to?) man one on one...but they are hardly ever isolated on one side of the floor like last season or even earlier this season. You'll see soon Smeg...Got tons of games taped..Ill hook ya up if you havent got em already.shh...
R2K well then that's just a matter of semantics. call it ISO, or don't call it ISO but call it one-on-one, it still adds up to the same thing, one guy dribbling the ball, 9 guys standing around getting hypnotized by the bouncing ball.
This is NOT "stand around and watch one guy dribble." It is getting the ball to the player who is most effective at forcing a defensive change (and yielding an open man). Pretty fundamental stuff, perfectly keeping in line with the philosophy when the team DID go iso that you play the percentages. When any given play/player scores with a high frequency, you keep going to it.
Unfortunately I don't think Steve Francis is the type of dominant player who makes defense shift all the time. As a result this kind of philosophy only makes him go 1-on-1 most of the time. But Rudy seems to think he's.
Haha, I just got a chance to listen to it. Thanks edc Cool to see a fellow cc.net member was on the air. Good job Smeg
we gotta pay for Smegs call last night. dude spent easily $100 bucks on that call I think either that or pay for the legal defense of our dirty little secret in the Rudy T MP3 distribution on this site.... money says we hear about this some how.....
I didnt make myself clear. ISO ball= 4 players clear out to weak side....ballhandler on opposite side of the court with his defender. Attempt to take it to the hole or juke your defender out of his shoes for an open shot that noone is in any position to rebound. one-on-one play= team spaced around the court(top of the key, high post, etc) ballhandler tries to drive around defender or run around a pick for a open shot without looking to pass to teammate. neither one are how I believe they should do it, but at least with the 1-on-1 there is a decent chance that we have someone in position for a rebound whereas with ISO-ball...the rest of the team is in no position to assist the ballhandler to get to the basket... and Im with xcharged on this one Smeg....Where was the CC.net plug??
I must disagree, Francis consistently makes a team shift. Everytime he goes to the rack, there are at least two guys on him if not three. Steve's problem is he doesn't give up the ball in that situation.
