I see a lot of credit going around to D'Antoni, Morey and the Rockets and Golden State. Well deserved for sure, however, us old Rocket fans have seen this offense before. Rudy T introduced the first version of this with Hakeem in the post as the wheel for the 3s...paint points and 3s....that was the offense. Then, Rudy T introduced the birth of what we are seeing now with Steve Francis, Drive and dish..... So, while the rest of the league is catching on....Rudy T was the true inventor of this philosophy, and he should get some of that credit. DD
Don't forget Robert Horry was the original stretch 4. Clutch City itself is one of humanity's greatest creations.
With a Center that was called, Inside Out. Kobe to Shaq ..... Shaq to Shooters Rafer to Yao ...... no entry pass to Yao ---- Rafer brick
That team wasn't even built to fit a particular offensive system. He created the offense out of what worked with the players he had. Just a smart guy. A pioneer.
I get your point, but the offenses were nothing alike. There were plenty of mid-range shots taken on that team. Also, haven't you bashed "moreyball" quite a bit in the past? And now you are trying to say it's the same as the Rudy T system? 90s Rockets basketball looked nothing like Moreyball and nothing like D'Antoni's system. The Rockets emphasized post-ups over 3s, took mid range shots, etc.
Go back and read, Rudy talked about 3pt shots, and the paint, those were the shots they wanted to get - yes, they took some midrange and did not take it as far as we have this year, but specifically the Steve Francis team was nearly identical to this, with his drive and dish out to 3pt shooters. The point was Rudy seems to have been the birth of this whole thing..... DD
The Rockets didn't even lead the league in 3s. Are you saying that any coach who liked 3 pointers should be credited with "inventing" or "starting" an offensive system that essentially orders you not to shoot the mid range, not to post up and only go for layups, dunks and 3s? Shoot, lots of coaches "talked about 3pt shots and paint." I do think Rudy T was very forward thinking with his beliefs about spacing the floor, but the offensive systems aren't very similar.
Yes, they are. Nearly identical in what they are seeking, think of what we are running now as a further honing of what Rudy created. DD
Rudy's philosophy always evolved to fit his personnel, I LOVED that, but none of his sets went very deep. Sure, MDA might be the better playcaller when he's running HIS system the way he wants, but Rudy wouldn't walk in to LA and struggle/fail to get Pau/Dwight to perform. Adaptability isn't in the MDA DNA. Rudy was out there winning bronze medals with Brad Miller and some high school kids. MDA gets good players overpaid, like Joe Johnson and Shawn Marion. Rudy T gets TERRIBLE players overpaid, like Matt Maloney & Kelvin Cato. Now THAT is coaching. Lulz.
I just couldn't disagree with you more. Francis and Mobley took a lot of mid range shots. Rudy ran post up sets for Kelvin Cato and Mo Taylor. Nearly identical in what they are seeking?
That's not called 3 and paint. That's called paint and 3, or like others have said, inside-out. You throw the ball in to Hakeem; draw the double/triple team; kick out to the 3pt shooter at the top; draw the defensive rotation; pass around the arc; somebody has an open 3; or throw it back inside to Hakeem with single coverage. That was actually an innovation. The inside-out game was old school. The four 3pt shooters around the arc was new. Somebody said that Rudy T's was pushing the inside-out game "to the extreme." Now people are saying that Morey is pushing the 3 and paint concept to the extreme. Sounds familiar? BTW, I think putting the 3pt shooting Horry at the 4 was also the beginning of the "Stretch 4" concept, although there had been other 3pt shooting PFs before that.
We can agree that the Push something to the extreme "extremist" Morey should win something, namely something big.
Others did not read the entire post. Steve Francis led Rockets under Rudy was the same thing we are seeing now.....on a smaller scale. People see Dream and don't read the rest of the post. DD
Yeah, I think he deserves some - he has always wanted to push the pace more....and he chose D'Antoni to replace that crappy McHale. So sure, he should get some. DD
