Well you're attacking a coach that I had respected and rooted for, in particular for drafting a player that didn't quite turn out to be what we expected. But here's the thing, very few people dissed that trade on the day he was drafted and especially on this board, most people were excited by the trade. So dissing Rudy for the pick and Eddie's problems to me seemed dumb.
STFU...i'm sure you weren't saying he did a terrible job when he got 2 rings for us. i'm sure you weren't b****ing when EG was having a great 2nd half to his rookie season and he looked like he was going to be a stud. i'm sure you weren't b****ing when he got cat in the 2nd round. i'm sure you weren't b****ing when he got yao over super-hype jay williams. i'm sure you weren't whining when he got stevie franchise in that great trade. not everything works out for the best....god damn it some people are really pissing me off today. i'm going to stop posting before i start throwing around f---ing bombs since it's ok now. arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
Rudy T. did an excellent job in drafting players graded consensus top 3, like Yao and Steve (throught trade). In baseball terms, he knows who is a power hitter/home-run hitter when he sees him. But the Rox, not necessarily Rudy, is not very good at drafting players from the 5th pick on. In this department, we lag behind the Spurs and the Suns. Occassionaly, the Rox hits on a Cat, a Horry or a Cassell. Just recently, Rox got busted in EG. I think it is probably that Rox wants so desperately a top talent that we missed some pretty good "contact hitters" like Jefferson/Parker/Randolph. The lesson here is that Rox should invest a bit more on evaluating talents from the 5th pick on and the second round ones. After all, with the talent we have, we probably won't see a top 5 pick for a while.
This is a very good point, I really haven't thought of,...but it's a good way to put it in coming to grips with the personnel-related shortcomings associated with the Rudy regime...
Not that I agree with this thread, I think Rudy overall was overratted as a talent evaluator but he was pretty good. He had his hits and misses, but he got paid to make those evaluations, so how fans felt on draft day about Eddie Griffin is neither here nor there, that was his job.
As the college season would down, to my recollection Griffin was the concensus #1 choice. However, as the actual evaluating, sorting and ranking took place no one placed him there anymore. Even SI had him going #7 to NJ as I recall. What are the Rockets still doing thinking he is the top overall selection when no one else who was in the running for him thought so? We jumped into that one blind beause we were unprepared and going on press clippings, I guess. I hope we don't ever do that again.
Acquiring EG wasn't a ridiculous choice for the Rockets and Rudy at the time. However, I think anyone who gives Norris and Taylor a contract has some serious talent evaluation problems. This I don't understand. Oh by the way, drafting Yao was a no brainer for anyone except maybe Dick Vitale.
