Now you are just going over the top. Martin is an efficient scorer that can score 20 ppg without dominating the ball. He wasn't some sort of advanced stats wunderkind unless you think free throws attempted, FT%, and 3pt% are some sort of advanced stat. Do you honestly believe those things are advanced stats?

Rudy is a nice player. People try to rip on him too much here. He is overpaid, but a nice player. The chances of him living up to that contract aren't great, but he hasn't imploded after getting that contract either. He is a shooter and he can create his own shot. He doesn't get to the line too much. He is about an average rebounder for a starting 3. I know you are a homer, but can you say he is head and shoulders above Iggy, Wallace, Deng, Granger, Gallo, or Pierce?

I know you are just trolling, but you were talking about efficiency.

    Thread still going i see...

@What, you're not understanding what efficiency means here. Even other Gay fans will tell you to drop it because you're digging yourself a deep hole here.

You want to score as many points as possible on as few shot attempts as possible, period. You've got a combination of pt FGs, free throws, and 3pointers to use in basketball and what matters is not just the attempts, but also the % you hit. You use all of that to determine efficiency. There isn't just one way to be efficient. The argument against Gay is he is mostly sticking to one option (2 pt FGs). In that option he may be efficient compared to other SFs, but in general, it's the bigs who shine as efficient players in the 2pt FG category, and those averages are above 50%.

Actually I just don't give much respect to that stat. The flaw in the stat is that it attempts to include free throws in shooting percentage. This is why Danilo Gallinari is ahead of Kevin Durant.

It also simultaneously devalues a 2 point shooter. That is why Pietrus, Turk and Kover make the top ten because they score more points per shot attempt.

It's just a dumb stat all around.

Kevin Martin has been awesome in advanced offensive metrics. Of course he has been directly the opposite defensively. It doesn't help that he has been the best player on a majority of his teams, while Rudy Gay is the 3rd best on his now good team. Memphis's starting 5 when healthy is very impressive. Conley has been awesome so far this season.

Did you know to this point in the season, the other 4 starters have a higher PER & WS/48?

Even across their careers, Gay has the lowest WS/48 of Memphis' starting 5.

Certain shot attempts are more likely to draw fouls and create free throws. This is a fact. FTAs are almost always converted at a higher percentage than FGAs (obviously there are exceptions).

It's not the stat that's dumb.

Object of the game is to score more points than the other team, no? Free throws are points, no? 3pt shots are worth more than 2pt shots. Why shouldn't these things be valued.

when a stat attempts to say that one shot is BETTER and more valuable than another shot, that's when my bs meter is on.

The formula is clearly not adjusted correctly until our eyes confirm what the numbers show. IE Pietrus not being ahead of Lebron James.

not saying that they shouldn't. I'm only saying that the formula, not the concept itself, is off. the formula needs to be adjusted.

clearly john hollinger created PER to specifically emphasive gay's weaknesses and guys like conley, gasol, and randolph's strengths and now people like you are making these arguments without understanding the obvious reasons that "advanced" stats (that just rely on the box score stats) don't love rudy gay to the degree he obviously deserves. that's the only explanation.

the concept is that points per possession is the most important part of offense and should be measured. the formula takes points scored and divides by the number of scoring possessions used (FGA + .44 * FTA) to measure shooting/scoring efficiency. how else should the formula be constructed?

    You were talking about efficiency.

BTW are you still surprised Rudy Gay is nowhere close to 25 ppg?

What formula do you have to show that Rudy Gay is showing the world that he is on Durant's level?

    Here's your problem:

You think the efficiency rankings are used to determine top player rankings, or at least, that people think they should. That's not the case. Efficiency rankings determine just that, efficiency. The most efficient player isn't necessarily the top player, or even one of the best. The usefulness of the stat is you can select efficient players and give them more opportunities and limit those of less efficient players, which should result in a more efficient team (winning). Of course sometimes efficient players don't stay that way when given more touches, but you won't know how they respond until you put the plan into action.

The top players are those who can be more efficient more consistently.

The whole thing isn't as dumb as you think. A lot of this is seen during a game. You don't let a good 3 pt shooter shoot an open 3, you make a right handed player go left, etc...You're using your memory's stats when you make those observations. Crunching the numbers allows you to check what you're seeing or your logic. Is a left handed player really worse going right? You'd think so, that's what logic says and what you usually see, but the numbers for a certain player may tell you otherwise.

Personally, I'm left handed, but am better going right.

I agree. Rudy Gay has proven he is on Kevin Durant's level this year. By my count he is scoring 8 less points per game. I think he sharpshooting from 3 point land of 29% really brings him up to that level. He is even deadlier from the free throw line too. I think he is nailing about 64% of his free throws. That is considerably better than Dwight Howard and Dwight is a pretty good player too.

    *bold

why use .44 why not .50, why not .33.

secondly, by dividing total points by shot attempts it clearly favors the 3 point shooter and not the mid range shooter. the whole formula is attacking the 2 point shooter.

as far as how it should be construed, it might just be that the concept is flawed to begin with. Or maybe it should be tweaked some way. not sure.
