Hollinger on Rudy Gay: The signing of his max deal: http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/insi...ist=hollinger_john&page=freeagentmoves-100701 Projection at the beginning of this year: http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/2012-13-mem-preview/memphis-grizzlies-player-profiles The move to trade him seems to make sense, given the change in leadership.
Just looked in to rudy's stats, he's...actually not that good. I always thought he was a allstar like player or high border line allstar. But thats not the case, parsons is avg more assist, rebounds, just about same in steals, better FG%, less T/O's, in the same amount of mins this season and is 2 years older then parsons. So no to rudy to houston please lol
Would this trade work out for both teams? Memphis Trades: Rudy Gay, Tony Wroten Orlando Trades: J.J. Redick, Jameer Nelson Orlando would get an all-star(?) caliber player. A flashy player who is an athletic dunker and could bring in fans who are familiar with him. They also get a young PG in Wroten, and now have a very young team. Throw in some picks if need-be. They'd be competitive (at least in the East) short term while having some prospects to develop for the future. The Grizzlies get some 3 point shooters to help out their anemic offense at times. The inside-out game would flourish. Redick is one of the best shooters in the game now, and he's on a one-year deal. They'd have a great 6th man in Nelson with Finals experience who could lead the second unit.
I actually like that you've suggested the Magic as a potential trade partner. They still have a glut of guards and swingmen who can shoot, left over from their days of surrounding Howard with shooters while he operated in the post. I think Redick and his win-now expiring 6 million contract would definitely be a part of any trade between the two teams, you've really nailed it there. But the problem is that it's unclear how Jameer Nelson and the terrible contract he just signed (3 years, 25 million) fits into the Grizzlies' cap relief plans. They already get great value behind Mike Conley at the PG spot with Jerryd Bayless. I don't think any team wants to spend 8 million / year on a backup PG, least of all a team like Memphis that is looking to shed salary going forward. My guess would be that the Grizzlies would want a promising young prospect and filler to go along with JJ. Moe Harkless comes to mind...
Thanks for the feedback! It seems apparent to me that the Griz will not be sending Gay to any team that is competing for the playoffs, especially in the West. I wasn't sure who to accompany Redick to the Griz to make the salaries match. Hedo is out of the question. I thought Bayless could play the 2 whilst Nelson backed up Conley. Both teams would like to go young, but I imagine the Grizzlies are in win-now mode with Randolph playing nigh-MVP level. Whose contract would the Griz need to eat? Turkoglu? Harrington? Would this work better? Memphis Receives: Redick, Harrington, Harkless Orlando Receives: Gay, Wroten
I really like that trade. Magic would get a guy that they could "build around" and JJ Reddick would be a good fit in Memphis. Plus, Orlando has the TPE to take on Gay.
I think Hedo would have to be in the mix as potential salary filler. We learned during Orlando Magic trade talks that the last year of his contract--which is a...wow, player option?? who gives these things out anyway??--is not guaranteed. Hedo is an old guy on a bad deal who was brought back to Orlando to play with a player who is no longer with their team. He demonstrates no synergy with the younger guys on their squad because he spent all of the season up until now with a hand injury. He looks done. It's best to treat him as a valuable 11.8 expiring contract, with a buyout or a waiver down the road for him if/when he picks up his option. I would actually be incredibly surprised if Turkoglu was still with the Magic after the trade deadline. Maybe he's still being retained because there's nothing sexier than a 12 million expiring contract that is NOT guaranteed, which would be the case going into next season? It's tough to second-guess this new Magic GM, though, after he completely screwed up the Howard deal and got his team less than he could. He's been a very poor Spurs front office disciple so far.
Per Ric Bucher: Maybe to What's delight the Grizzlies will get Jan Vesely, who he thinks has what it takes to be the next big star...
Rudy is a baltimore guy, so if the grizzlies were to trade Rudy I'd imagine that the wizards would want to be apart of it. And yes, I still love Vesley as a player I just think he has been badly coached. But his contract is probably too big. A deal with the wizards would be something like Ariza, Jordan Crawford and Kevin Seraphin.
Just in the last couple of days the clippers have offered bledsoe, butler and picks for Gay. Now Washington has offered Brad Beal in a large deal. Seems like teams value Rudy Gay pretty highly. http://www.commercialappeal.com/new...agement-remains-mum-as-blow/?CID=happeningnow
The article states that Pera and the new grizzlies management have spoken to Gay and his agent and have assured Gay that the only way he will be deal before the deadline is if another team basically gives up a no-brainer deal. It also states that Zach's offers have been weaker than Rudy's offers. So Zach is not as valued as Rudy Gay is it seems.
Well, the highly competent Wizards franchise turned down Beal for Harden, so logically Rudy Gay is better than Harden.
I think that Beal was/is seen as a cheaper version of Harden. Rudy Gay on the other hand is an athletic home town kid who is more versatile and plays better defense than Harden and when you have to guard Lebron, Melo, etc in the east, you need a guy like Rudy Gay.
