Take it! This is the breakout year for Kwame and Gay will be down on his shooting %'s.

Ok I'm jk, Kwame is just as sorry if not worse..

On the topic of Gay, I do believe that eventually he'll be a star.. but more of the Richard Jefferson type.. not a franchise player. I think once Pau returns when eternity ends, he'll be able to give Gay more freedom and open looks.. improving his shooting %'s.

    PGabriel,

While I see the hyprocracy, and that's not cool (and I hope Gay does well, just no too well), the Rockets have the luxury to afford waiting on V-Span. He's not in the top 8-9 man rotation, so they're not counting on him to produce. Damn I'm glad that they lucked out on Bonzi, for w/o Bonzi, that's one more guy you need to produce, whereas no it's a luxury if a suprise steps up. Battier is counted on to produce and Gay would have been counted on too.

I don't agree that the "win now" philosophy was in effect. I'm not saying I like or dislike a "win now" idea, but that term was just thrown around after the trade to make the trade fit into a mind-set. I think it oversimplified things, or maybe undersimplified things.

To me, it was that they liked Brandon Roy most, who wasn't available, and then Thabo Seloshefa. And they thought Battier was better than Thabo, and it's not like Battier is old either. Oh, and they saved $10.5 million bucks.

And the whole V-Span thing again was not about getting younger; it was about Mike James not signing here (again I'm not blaming anyone). Then the chronicle goes out and says it's about getting younger. Total BS. It's like going back and trying to assign political theories to say these guys acted this way b/c they followed this theory, when the reality is just not so.

So it is what it is. Go Gay, but not too soon. And Go Rockets!

I understand that, and I'm really not even arguing about the trade. however, isn't point guard an issue on this team, and spent millions on a guy who isn't ready on a position they need. they are counting on luther head to be their backup, what happens when rafer get's injured? that's a scary thought.

The 1.8 mil a year in MLE money they gave to Spanoulis is chump change in NBA terms. There really aren't too many NBA ready talented players you can go out and get for 1.8 mil of your MLE. It's a fair enough price to pay to gamble on an Euro project. IIRC, this is similar money to what guys like Oberto, Garbajosa, Anthony Parker, Calderon, Hermann are getting.

After losing Mike James, who was the next best FA option at PG out there? Overpay for Banks and Salmons?

Yes, PG is definately an issue but not as much as filling the 2-guard spot. SG was our #1 priority. VSpan is more of a 2-guard than a PG. That's why we signed VSpan knowing that we MIGHT be able to get him to play some PG but he's mostly a SG.

Now that our SG spot is set for THIS year, we can focus on grooming our current guys or make a trade after the season starts. I'm not too worried about it right now. Worth keeping an eye on but no need to panic.

btw, figuring out our PF spot is more critical than back PG right now. I'd guess we acquire a PF before we acquire a backup PG but you never know how the chips fall once the season starts.

The only way to elevaluate this is through hindsight, doesn't help at this point to speculate...

For now, we have our big 3 (maybe 4) for the next handful of seasons, and if that equates into a ring or 2 now, I don't care how good a player Rudy Gay turns out to be (Kobe/Lebron/Wade aside). We're legit without Gay, Memphis isn't with him.

But, if we come up empty during those seasons and Rudy turns out to be a great, max-contract type player, then you can make your case...

BTW, Don't forget we weren't the the only team that passed on him, there were 8, including us...

I was never to happy with this trade.

Gay was too good to trade.

It was like trading Divacs for Kobe. Made sense for the Hornets only because Kobe refused to play for them.....

I think we just made a big mistake.

Battier is comparable to Divacs. Gay is most definitely NOT comparable to Kobe. Time will tell whether the Rockets blew it or not.

Rudy out with "bruise chest muscle" tonight.

Boy, am I glad we didn't get him. The last thing we need is more injury problems on this team. Rudy has already missed 1/3 of the games in his NBA career already.

    :p

It was not just the Rox that were concerned about his motivation and desire. How many other teams passed on this guy??

I watched too many UCONN games last year where Rudy disappeared for long stretches.

Can you teach a desire to be great? I think so. Should be fun to watch his development and see if Rox made the right choice.

Didn't Cato score like 30 points in a preseason game and got a big fat contract?

OH BROTHER!!!! this is rediculous. sorry, but rudy gay is never going to be lebron james. the rockets made the right move. we now have a winning team with alot of expectations. if we had kept gay we wouldnt be in the spot we are now. we certainly wouldnt be a contender.

hard to say...personally, I think the Bonzi move was as big if not bigger.

Assuming everything else happened and you just switch Shane for Gay/Swift, I'd personally have equal expectations of this year.

I understand the Rockets reasons for making the move:

    1. Win now vs. maybe later
    2. Line-up diversity. A PF that can shoot. JVG has been asking for and claiming this is the key for a while now.

.....And dont look now, but Bogans is doing well in Orlando - shooting a high percentage from the perimeter.

he has his time in Houstn to thank. As does Boki.

    And Gay :D

dude.. it's irrational to expect Gay not to become good.... gasol isn't playing and Gay is probably the only guy on that memphis squad with the talent-level to take the majority of the shots... His turn around is killed and he elevates so much higher than the crowd.. he has a ridiculous wing-span.. this guy is going to be good.. sorry to say it.. but it's true..

not to say the rocket's messed up.. i don't think Gay has that mentality to become a t-mac like superstar... he might end up like a michael redd type all-star.. but the rocket's needed the utility, consistent man more in battier.
