Rubio gets out of his obligation with the Wolves by sitting out a year, not by playing BBall elsewhere for any length of time. Think Spurs right to Scola.
wow...this is BS........i agree, the league should implement new rules regarding foreign players and their buyout BS
He isn't able to--the Wolves own his right forever. As other posters have said, the only way they would lose his rights is if he sits out a year not playing basketball anywhere. In which case he would get no income AND still have to pay a buyout to his current team. Never gonna happen. So, long story short, he's owned by the Twolves until they trade him...he can never just come over as a free agent. As far as the NBA is concerned, Minnesota owns him, and they, apparently, are willing to wait two years to get him. At which time he will still be under the drinking age...I don't think they're in any rush.
He should be able to wait a year at least. He's got a 6 million dollar buyout, no way does it make sense financially to come over here. It'd be like playing for free. As far as experience, my personal opinion is that PGs should come to the league as experienced as possible. I think most of the guys drafted after 1 year of college are going to be in for a rough ride, just because D. Rose and CP3 did doesn't mean Tyreke Evans and Brandon Jennings will have the same success. It really doesn't hurt to wait for either Minnesota or Rubio.
Now you know why Minnesota drafted two PGs -- they knew there was a chance that Rubio would not come over. I actually think that it's a good move for Rubio. He is not physically ready for the NBA. A coulpe of more years in Europe would do him wonders.
Yea he is stupid for doing that. Why do young international players that get drafted always complain about where they are going to play. I mean they acting like they can pick what team they want to play for. Like Yi didnt want to play for the Bucks because the Asian population in Milwalkee is low. How r****ded is that Yi? Rubio...You're smarter than that. You will make more money playing for Timberwolves, you will be noticed and you will have great experience and be a way better player in two years other than going back overseas and come back in two years and be back in square one. It is always better to start playing at the youngest age possible.
Will given he'll have to pay 6MM out of pocket the first season, it might not be that great financially, but it also means he can get out of his contract earlier and make max money (if he's good enough) sooner. However, if he think he might flame out with the wolves, then this is the better move money wise (i.e. if he gets $4MM a year offers after his rookie contract because he hasn't developed, it wouldn't make sense to loose the $6MM upfront). But if he gets to max money at age 24 (come over here at age 20 and sign extension after 4 years), he will still likely get 2 max contract out of it (his second one will be at his prime at 29-30). The only thing he'll give up is being able to sign his 4th contract at age 34 vs. age 36. Given how most NBA players don't get significant coin at that age range anyways (most retire since they feel offers are usually beneath them) and you add in time series of money for 14 years with $6MM at time 0, again this might not be a bad decision financially especially weighing the risk vs. rewards.
Rubio will be traded soon. The Wolves are just trying to save face and trying to keep the upperhand on trade talks. They lost their hand on draft night.
Totally agreed. I think what people are forgetting here is that Rubio doesn't have a say in whether his name gets put in the draft - he would've been drafted whether he wanted to or not (like what we've done with Llull). Before the draft it was open knowledge that he wasn't interested going to a small market team and the if the situation wasn't right for him he wasn't going to pay a $6mil buyout to play in a place he doesn't like. KNOWING this is exactly what could've happened, Minnesota still picked him anyway because they saw trade value (picking Jon Flynn showed they had no confidence in Rubio sticking around). Minnesota got EXACTLY what they asked for. If you're angry at the situation you should direct it towards sota.
How is that stupid? In hindsight, Yi's agent had incredible forsight. It looks like Yi's biggest NBA contract will be his rookie contract. And that he missed the biggest endorsment phase of his career(1st year before people realized he sucks) stuck in Milwaukee. Yi absolutely would've made more money elsewhere. Because unlike Yao, he's garbage on the floor.
If he stays in Europe for two more years, he'll probably stay for the remainder of his good years. I don't see the Twolves ever being a place he'd come play and European teams will throw some big money at him as they are not bound by rookie contracts. He better get traded soon or the NBA will miss seeing a great talent develop and reach his prime.
Exactly 2 years from now no GM is going to care much unless he becomes a stud and elite PG. If he becomes mediocre then Wolves are just doomed, they waste a top 5 pick and waited 2 years for nothing. This shows there lack of commitment to put out a winning roster on the floor every night. They could have easily packaged those picks in some blockbuster deal or moved up the draft to take a guy like Harden to contribute right away or even a Curry as the pick. They would giveaway Foye and Miller for nothing and look once again in the draft for fill the holes they have now after that trade. Give up Rubio and maybe you can save face.
I'm all for no whining, but I feel in this situation, at least some of the blame lies on the Wolves. They are, in essence, holding the kid hostage. The pick was just bogus, and you can't tell me that they didn't pick him in hopes that they would have some killer trade offer to ship him off for. And don't use the excuse that "They were gonna pla in a two point-guard system." because I think that is bogus too. If you're doing something like that, you don't have two pure point guards. You have a pure-type guy, and you have a Brooks-type slasher (You could make an argument that Flynn is this type of player, but I digress. He's more a pure point guard). In fact, the two point guards on our roster are better suited for that type of situation than those two. So, in my opinion, the Wolves, are just getting what's coming to them right now. Either trade the kid away, or I hope he screws you over.
