Agree. I don't think he has the right to speak for other people who has mental health issues.

Mental illness is not all in your head. It is a real, physical problem and those suffering from it deserve our support, same as the victims of any other disease. Nobody's saying Royce should suffer in silence. Remember, when he was drafted, he got a lot of favorable opinions on this board as an advocate for mental illness awareness, and most people approved of the organization taking steps to work with him, like letting him take a bus whenever possible.

What people are objecting to is that Royce appears to be trying to use his illness to get minutes he hasn't earned with the Rockets and to avoid getting sent down to RGV, and doing so in a public, misleading way that embarrasses the organization with his one-way Twitter war. The complaints that he isn't handling this situation privately are not related to his mental health, they're related to him having this fight in public. Fans would be just as disapproving of a wide receiver who carpet-bombed Twitter instead of taking it up with the coaching staff because he wasn't getting enough touches.

I agree with most of what you all said but in this case how did it just suddenly get worse after the draft and money came around.Im not saying he doesnt have a problem but the dude ran everything short of a con scan.I think he is making it look bad to the ones that really have problems.

Eh. Still rooting for Royce to be able to play.
Not rooting for or against the Rockets or Royce.
Just still rooting for something to be worked out.

And all this anti-Royce stuff, I mean, c'mon,
fans regularly attack players in proportion to how good they think they could be. Royce, should take it as a compliment maybe.

That said, certainly seems as if Mr White won't be playing very soon.
I hope a path to getting him to the court can be seen by all parties involved.
    Meh.

It's MESSED UP to compare a mental illness to CANCER. There is NO CURE for cancer, man. :( Please take that back, sir, I beg of you.

Nothing wrong with Royce being public about mental illness and calling attention to it.

If he was just tweeting about how he was struggling and asking for help/patience, that would be one thing. But he's blaming everyone else instead, as if we're the problem.

Posters should stop with the condescending posts suggesting that others don't understand mental illness. I am guessing that just about every poster who has posted in this thread experiences a diagnosable mental illness or has a close family member or friend who has. Dingbat posters on here have told me I don't understand mental illness when I have experienced it firsthand and treated thousands of patients with mental disorders. That is just a lazy way to make an argument so please stop.

You quoted a post that said it was refreshing to see someone who actually worked to beat their mental health problem rather than just tweeting about their problems and you got on your soapbox spouting nonsense. Let's be clear, Royce White is probably hurting his cause more than helping it, and here is why:

    (a) He is promoting this belief that equates physical illness with mental illness, just like you do in your comparison of an anxiety disorder and cancer. While there is a biological component to every psychiatric problem, it is not the same as a terminal physical illness. White is promoting the belief that once you acquire an anxiety disorder you have it for life and there is nothing you can do about it, which can do great harm for the cause because it is patently false.

    (b) Worst of all, White is promoting the belief that the rest of the world needs to accommodate him. He actually thinks that this is how you deal with an anxiety disorder- you get others to make you feel more comfortable and safe. That is also the opposite of the truth. The best way to beat an anxiety disorder is to face what you are afraid of. So in fact, having a difficult environment could be what ultimately heals someone with an anxiety disorder. Case in point, if White saw the flying thing as a challenge, he could have totally beat his fear of flying by now just by facing that fear of flying for every road game.

I don't know. I had cancer and it was cured. My wife has depression and we are having a hard time finding a solution. There are shades of gray to everything.

I understand Royce has his mental health issues. I'm not denying that or doubting it for one bit. But he has to meet the Rockets half way if he wants to make things work. He cannot expect the Rockets to meet all of his standards.

Being mentally ill is one thing, but even so, he still has to work hard and earn his opportunity just like everyone else. The Rockets are trying to help him and supporting him in every single way that they can. The Rockets drafted him, gave him an opportunity to have a bright future, so he has to at least work hard and give something back to the organization.

From the look of things, it feels like Royce thinks the Rockets owe him something. Royce is an employee of the Rockets organization so just like any employee, he has to go to work, and yes the Rockets will help him and support his mental illness, but at the end of the day, he has to put in work because the Rockets are paying him.

What really bothers me is that the Rockets are doing everything they can to help him and yet, he's making it sound like the Rockets are the bad guys. The Rockets are issuing him a mental health professional and he doesn't show up to the appointments. Royce doesn't show up to practices, ignores his teammates, doesn't show up to games or D-League assignments, or the mental health appointments. I mean, what else does the Rockets organization has to do for Royce to just show up and do his job?

This is starting to be really ridiculous. The Rockets are wasting time and money on somebody who doesn't even give any type of effort. He keeps tweeting all these stuff but yet, he doesn't do anything but tweet. If he continues doing this, I hope the Rockets are able to terminate his contract and the NBA just blackballed him from the league so he can just go on and work on his arts and music or whatever he wants to do because apparently, he's not giving any effort to be an NBA player.

I'm convinced Royce is a legitimately horrible human being after this.

He's also killing his cause. #Awareness!

I'm sure teams will jump at the next player that has mental illness, I'm sure that guy will jump right up the draft boards now!

What department would that be? The inability to understand someone like you? I would call that perfectly understandable.

I don't know from a treatment perspective but from the ADA perspective reasonable accommodations should be made.

That said I think what Royce White has been asking from the Rockets is beyond reasonable.

I'm convinced that he doesn't actually want to play basketball for a living. He just wants his $3m over two years and retire to a life of an imaginer.
