Well whoever said that is just dumb.

There's plenty of people with mental illness that function in life just fine.

Also plenty of people who are mentally ill and don't even know it, but still function somewhat okay...i guess. lol

I understand the frustration with some fans and the jokes here and there, but the ones that talk out their arse and are flat out spitting venom need to STFU.

    I feel you on that.

NBA might be a dream come true, but being UNHEALTHY isn't, people will know I stood up for myself and what's right. #NeverABadTime

I'm not PLANNING to quit, but if its between my HEALTH and BASKETBALL, health takes precedence. You should never choose ANYTHING over it.

if he quits he has effectively CLOSED the door for any other young athlete that may be going through the same or similar mental conditions as him -- GMs will see that the Rockets tried to bend over the backwards to help Royce and then see what happened.

If anything if a team drafts someone like him again it will be a second round pick thats for sure. No time will risk wasting a first round pick and giving up guaranteed money

I am sure that the Rockets will be able to get their money back from his contract -- its one thing if he isnt medically able to play its another if he just quits on the team like that.

I had hopes for White -- but man he has even turned me against him -- its not anything about his illness he is going through a lot that someone like me has never had to deal with but if the reports of him wanting playing time to "treat" his problem its absurd

EDIT: just saw the new tweets -- the guy is smart he put PLANNING in caps to emphasize the word to make it seem that the Rockets forced him to quit if he does

If he slowed down some, he'd realize he'd probably choose his kid over health, if necessary, like many people do. If he was all about his health, he wouldnt have had a kid at such a young age.

PTSD can also be induced by childhood trauma, or rape, or being victim of other crime. You are not wrong that vets have PTSD, but those outside of war environments can have PTSD too.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is basically the side-effect of having a person living under an extreme amount of stress, ether from a single incident with long-reaching effects (ie. 9/11, natural disasters, battlefield trauma, rape) or from long-term sustained stress (ie. living in a warzone even if you've never been in a battle, growing up in an abusive environment, living with an abusive spouse).

Having your brain steeped in 'stress'-chemicals for a long time kind of locks in that pattern of 'stress' effect; the upshot of which is that even in a non-stressful environment, the brain reacts with more anxiety than it should. It might, for instance, cause a vet to lash out at someone touching them on the arm, because the vet expect that person to be trying to kill them.

It might also cause someone to believe that everyone is against them and that no one is trustworthy, that every single action someone takes around you has an ulterior motive and they're all out to 'get you'. Because that someone's brain has being 'trained' by their life experiences to believe that they're always under attack.

I think, personally, this might be where White is coming from.

    what a coddled-vagina...

Royce actually helped me out today...

Today, I was presented with the opportunity to introduce myself to the Director of an emerging consultive sales group within our company.

I thought how I would be a good fit within this group and decided that I would just walk into his office and give him my "30 second self-advertisement" and let him know that I would be interested in any future positions that became available....

...and then it hit me....the paralyzing fear of rejection. "He's going to think I'm not qualified!"

I sat there and thought about it for a good 10 minutes, and then ole Royce popped into my head and I considered how he is handling his current dilemma.

Immediately, my new mantra rang loudly through my head.....

    "STOP BEING A B****!"

It turns out, the Director is currently expanding his group and was very appreciative that I came and met with him, and requested that I send him my resume.

    Thanks Royce!

I'm surprised no one mentioned that he was able to make it on time to the Photo shoots.

Glad you're working through your anxiety, crose. When can we expect to see you in practice again?

hope royce doesnt leave but if he does im happy for him. I'd rather have him healthy and happy rather than unhealthy and in the NBA. I'm also glad the rockets drafted Royce because it has really opened my eyes and has shown me how serious mental illnesses can be. Thanks Royce, keep fighting!!

Umm, there is no promise quitting will make him healthy. Going about the rest of his life demanding the world changes so he doesn't have to deal with his condition head on is nothing to cheer for. I feel for the young man. At some point, when the enablers can no longer enable, he might just commit to getting some help.

And the kid is obviously hiding behind the word "healthy." Who doesn't want to be "healthy"? What he wants is his "way" -- be it a bus, a custom practice schedule, pick and choose what activities to participate in, or even how much playing time he gets in a game.

No thank you, Royce. Get help.

This can't be stressed enough, and anyone who honestly thinks people can't be hurt by what they post online, in any fashion, suffers from their own delusions. I'm continually astonished by what I read here in the various forums. Heck, sometimes I astonish myself, but I try to be careful. These celebrities, and a big percentage see themselves that way, deserved or not, put themselves out there now. It's encouraged. After being celebrated in college, fed a good line about how great they are by their agent, told how great they are by a host of others, some genuine friends, some hanging around, hoping to pick up scraps down the line, all happening when those "celebrities" have done nothing, or next to nothing at this level, they think they can handle just about anything. The bet, of course, is that they will, and a lot of those wagers don't pay off.

Some thrive in the spotlight, can handle it with aplomb. Some people can't. Far better for most to remain anonymous. People get fired every day for what is discovered about them online. Apply for a job? Companies can either do their own research about you, or hire a company to do it for them, a company that specializes in unearthing everything "out there" about someone. Staying anonomyous online is a better path for most of us. It would have been better for Royce White. I dont know if he can put the Genie back in the bottle now, but I hope he tries. He is a genuine talent. Royce just needs to keep himself out of his own way.

I think that's the crux of the issue. He equates getting what he wants with helping him be mentally sound-- which is the case for everybody. We know he has anxiety but I think he's legitimately exploiting it at this point.

    This.

He would cope a lot better if he faced his fear and stopped deflecting all the time.

Its never his fault...and when he says stuff like "maybe i should have..." "I probably could have...".....its like....he knows, and displays this to seem self aware, but his self awareness is always AFTER THE FACT.

Can't live life like that without ending up lonely.

He has his own Dr. that he "trusts" and I'm sure they advise him to face the fear, but for whatever reason, he doesn't want to?

Maybe dude is just a lost 'cause....

Too stubborn, proud and self absorbed to deal with actual people.

It's on him at the end of the day though...not his ailment. HIM!

You want to play? Show the decision makers that you deserve to play.

If you don't want to, then don't.

Right now he's acting like the anti-Rudy Rudiger! (spl.)

    Same result tho....

    Footnote in history.

He needs to know and understand that no one will make him feel better and HE has responsibilities to do improve his "situation" if he wants to "feel better."

Basketball is your church....earn the PT.

Play in RGV and get to play the game you say you love.

If he's not willing, he don't love the game.

EVERYONE knows if you love the game, the game will love you back...if you earn it.

Batman, I think the point of that statement is that White gives a bad name to the mentally ill. He is scaring off people.

I am sure you know that mental illness has many forms and comes in various degrees of seriousness. Using just a simple term to generalize all people with mental illness is wrong. This is why White's "cause" of standing up for the mentally ill is so wrongheaded. Not every mentally ill person is like him. So at the end, he is just standing up for what he wants. This is why he comes across as a selfish diva.
