Cheers, And to answer your question, because he wanted to play in the Summer League and did with great performance. Had he not signed the Uniform Player Agreement contract forced upon rookies, he couldn't have played in Summer League. We can assume now that the negotiations of definition of handling his special treatment (requiring interpretation within the CBA and common employee rights) started long ago.
Despite my debate with some of you, I'm a White fan and am really pulling for him. I am just concerned about the care he's getting. But I guess we will learn more about it as the season progresses.
I'm going to guess it's because his anxiety issues seemed to have been relatively stable and in check. He either overestimated his self-coping abilities or the staff underestimated the it, or a bit of both. Most likely because they went through summer league just fine. Except it doesn't matter what your point is, if your reinforce your point with blatantly bullcrap such as meds having nothing to do with the treatment of the condition. And no, watching an episode of Dr. Phil doesn't make you an expert.
I'm normally sympathetic but not in this case. Its not like he can't deal with getting on a plane. He's done it before and he says he's willing to do it again. He needs to man up and deal with his fears. Sometimes you just have to face your fears, especially irrational ones, and stop being a p***y. Its called be brave. People do it everyday even when there is something real to fear.
Because Royce White did not have the power of negotiating special treatment prior to the draft like Yao Ming's handlers did. And because once drafted, White wanted to get to Summer League with his teammates and coaches, so was forced to sign his "Uniform Player Agreement" contract as requirement to play in the summer league. Then, Les can wait him out, and apparently did. White saying negotiations started prior to now, all points to the owner playing his dominate hand since he had Royce under contract.

White's fear of flying, he said, magnifies his anxiety disorder. So he's asked the Rockets to let him use a bus for some of the team's extensive road trips. White said he's willing to purchase the bus and assume liability. White Busing to games, he said, is a vital component in the treatment of his anxiety. White, who missed the team's media day on Monday and the start of training camp in McAllen, Texas, on Tuesday, said he hopes to reach an agreement with the team soon. He said he expects to join his teammates within "a week," if talks with the Rockets continue to progress. "What it's going to look like is every game that's drivable, I'm going to get a bus for myself," White said. "And I'm going to make that bus feel like home so that there's a level of consistency in a job where inconsistency is very apparent because of the schedule. I'm going to try and level that out and make sure that my stress levels stay low and that my rest is regular and that my meals are regular and that as much as I can, draw consistency from a very inconsistent schedule. ... "People with mental illness, one of the most important things is that they have that consistency and routine. The girth of (my request) was, 'Can I travel by bus to close enough games?' "
It was my family that are psychiatrists...not flamingdts. Last night, you were making the point that meds are pretty insignificant in treating White's problems. Nobody was saying that exposure therapy wasnt the most effective form of treatment. Also, nobody was saying that meds were the end all be all...but, meds can have a major positive impact on an overwhelming majority of conditions, when used along with all the other therapies that would cure anxieties. The purpose of meds isnt to cure...its to allow the patient to function properly while getting necessary treatment. I think you severely underestimated the impact of meds, which is surprising given your status and education. In any case, I prescribe anti-anxiety medications on a daily basis, so take my word for it that meds are an incredibly crucial aspect of therapy.
Well, I wasn't even talking about that. That absence was agreed because of the Asian Olympics (or some FIBA competition that he was committed to prior), so he had the right under FIBA rules to be late. It was the pre-draft negotiations that really caused a stir here. cheers
Traveling by bus? The only way I think this can happen is if the team (players) come to management and tell them they want to travel to SA, Dallas, NOLA ( maybe) by bus with White as support. No way the Rockets give him permission or the option to take a private bus. Anxiety or not that worsens team chemistry and bonding.
morey should get the contract voided and just step away from this situation altogether. cut the team's losses and move on.
Nonsense. The whole team can hang out at Royce's bus on these road trips. Super fun time. Also, promotional opportunities! Fans can enter drawings for tickets at SA or NOLA games and travel there on the Royce White bus!
Some of the things you say are a stretch, or at least unproven. White was forced to sign the UPA? No he wasn't. You haven't proven there wasn't enough time for him to negotiate. Les can wait him out? You haven't given any evidence showing he did, or even how he could. All of these events had to add up to free Royce of any blame for bringing this up last minute, and I'm guessing that, based on your lack of evidence, you just made some assumptions along the way.
