Some notable pics located on the espn front page under the link entitled "some disturbing images" on the first picture you can clearly see the knife on the guy's hip open blade and all. There's no way it was in his pocket and jumped out like that. Scary. Also the last pic it looks like Dad might have shared some sort of speed cuz' look at his son's eyes.
One way to improve security at minimum cost would be to put netting along the sideline stands. I believe they do this in Japan to prevent line drives from nailing people in the stands. It would be awfully tough to get through that netting. It's not very fan friendly but I think it'd work pretty well to stop these kinds of attacks.
They were hardly pounding on the guy for several minutes. It was more like 15 seconds before the Royals bench emptied. I do agree though that stadium security should have reacted quicker than the Royals players. There will never be enough security to keep fans off the field entirely, unless MLB, NBA & NFL decides to put up walls to keep fans off the field.
