blazer ben you're a fanatical idiot...first you claim that the bbc is funded by iran and then you claim that the west funded the iranian revolution...now you'er saying that pahlavi jr is more popular than the elected government of iran...these claims are ridiculous and so are you, but, as i said before, people here are selective in who they attack, so i'm sure i'll get attacked for this post...you're blinded by hatred...now as far as this article, it doesn't look like more than just the opinion of one person, which he is certainly entitled to...he doesn't cite any sources to back-up his claims though, but then again, neither do you....as i've said before the us backed illegitimate royal dictatorship of iran killed 10,000 people in one day in june 1963 so it's no stretch to say they killed tens of thousands of people as they desperately tried to hold on to power until the victory of revolution in 1979

1st source: "The Military and Politics in Iran: The Uneasy Symbiosis," Iran: Toward Modernity - Studies in Thought,Politics and Society, ed. by Elie Kedourie and Sylvia Haim (London: Frank Cass, l980), 217-240.

2nd source (these 6 volumes detail the atrocities from witnesses, friends, family, and relatives of the 10,000 that were killed in one day): Baqiri, 'Ali / 15th of Khordad memoirs. / Chap-i 1. / Tihran / 1995-Volumes 1-6

I can agree with the overall argument that there is a lot of internal pressure within Iran to reform and democratize but I found a lot of this article very hard to swallow and also question this as news since it notes that the writer is on the editorial board.

This seems to be a major editorial POV and overly favorable to the Shah. While Iran under the Shah was modern and western it also was a very repressive society that arrested and tortured political opponents. It appeared stable but that was a facade that hid the popular unrest underneath that was laid bare to the whole World in 1979. There's a reason why the Shah was overthrown not because the Iranian people wanted an Islamic theocracy but because the Shah was a brutal corrupt dictator. To praise he Shah as one who set his country on a course toward modernity and prosperity you might as well say the same for Saddam Hussein since both were about as brutal.

This might be the case since most of these students were born after the revolution and had no experience with life under the Shah. Obviously things now in Iran are pretty bad too which is why some might be looking back at the Shah with fondness like how there are many Russians now who look back to the Soviet Union with fondness.

Ironically the US invasion of Iraq might actually help Iran in this regard. If Iraq splits into three separate countries a Shiite South Iraq will be a natural ally for Iran especially since many of the Irari Shiite leaders were trianed, based and funded by Iran in exile. Even a Shiite dominated unified Iraq government might be more amenable to Iran.

This makes sense to me and I think anyone who's studied recent Iranian history would be aware that there is a major ferment against the rule of the Mullahs by the younger generation in Iran.

While the Iranians may want democracy I have a hard time believing they would want the Shah back. The Iranian people have been on a pendulum swing between a right wing secular dictatorship and a radical religious dicatorship so I'm guessing most Iranians would want to go back to anysort of dictatorship. While Mr. Pahlavi might talk a good game I'm not sure how much he might not be harboring his own dreams of a royal restoration.

LOL... Bagi is a mollah supporter and still backsup my claims of vast exaggeration by the likes of you about the previous regime. iran will have a republic where the mollahs will be sent back to the mosaques where the belong. the theocracy has failed. like monarchy did.

Almost stopped reading there...What a joke of a statement! Obviously an editorial that is favorable to the Shah and his son, but I read it anyways. Thanks for the read, Hayes.

I'm not an expert on the Shah's rule of Iran but what I do know was that the 1979 revolution was a widely supported revolution very much started by students not unlike the ones now who agitate against the Mullahs. You have to ask what would cause students and others in a seemingly westernized liberal society to rise up if there wasn't a widely shared sense of repression under the Shah.

I also know that Mullah rule wasn't necessarily what the 1979 Iranian revolution and that the Mullahs exploited the situation to fill in the power vaccuum once the Shah fell. So it is very possible for the rule of both the Shah and the Mullahs to be brutal and unpopular.

I would agree with that. monarchy was certianly better the current system. but in the long run it failed. only solution is a free republic.

Again i agree. the Revolution was a popular uprising, no doubt about it, but the end result is, we are far worse now then with what we were with. i support a Evolution. i believe revolutions are far too bloody and useless to do. internal change is bound to happen. a rotten and unpopular system will crumbel under it's own wheight.
