From the Rockets perspective, Gay still would not have helped the Rockets too much, while Roy could've been a difference maker. Even though Roy seems kind of done now, was there really any doubt that Yao/Roy/T-Mac would've pushed us further into the playoffs while our superstars were still healthy? Getting Gay would simply mean similar results in the past, and basically a 45 win team instead of a 40 win team now. So regardless of his situation now, I still lament that Portland cockblock that draft.
Martin won't be elite in my book until he can consistently take over games in the 4th quarter. He thrives against and specializes in destroying soft defenses. But when the going gets tough against great defensive teams, Kevin Martin comes up way short compared to guys like Kobe, Melo, Wade, etc. When it came to closing tough games, Brandon Roy was every bit as good as the top-tier guys. That is what made him great. I doubt very seriously Kevin Martin would ever score 40 points in a competitive playoff game. Wishful thinking.
well if we make the playoffs and if he does score 40 ill get back to you! cant believe you doubt he can go off for 40 in a playoff game!
Exactly! Kmart knows how to take advantage of bad teams, but against good teams, he is rather silent. He was decent for us against Miami, but really, that is the kind of game where if Kmart went off for 35-40 we would have easily won... Brandon Roy intrigues me. The guy seems like he's nothing but class and I wish he didn't have the injury problems he does. He has a winners mentality. Gay has a winner's body, but I'm not sure he has the fury and poise that Roy has. One has the brain of a superstar, the other the body.
He would have killed our cap. I think a yao, tmac, gay combination would have done well enough. Roy does have the ball in his hands a bunch.
He's still a scrub. He still doesn't play D, he still plays soft. He has good performances once in a while but the Grizzlies are paying him the max to always have good performances. If he were signed to around 5M a year he would be a bargain, but since he's making max money I consider him in the Rashard Lewis/Gilbert Arenas type of poison deal.
Is is just me who read the thread title as "Roy is gay"? Anyway, Gay is not a scrub. But he is certainly overpaid. Roy is not overpaid for his talent. He is injured. Nobody could foresee that when the contract was signed.
i think they did suspect he was not 100% thats why pritchard was fired! and offered a huge contract to a rookie matthews! to kinda help with roy bieng injured
There biggest mistake was rushing Roy back from knee surgery. Am I for sure wrong here??? If he stayed out longer and rehabbed, I believe his knees would be in better condition.
Gay gets a lot of hate in these parts because the Battier apologists are still trying to convince themselves that we didn't get robbed blind.
Battier was a better fit for the Rockets at the time the trade was made than Gay would have been. He was a + wing defender and a good spot up shooter. Which fit better than a guy that is a horrible defender and wasn't a good shooter in college. I still remember Gay's UConn team losing to George Mason to get to the Final 4. UConn was easily the most talented team in that year's NCAA tournament, even more so, than eventual champion Florida. It's funny that the Battier-Gay trade was made because they guy the Rockets wanted, Roy, was taken 2 picks before them. The Rockets are as injury prone as the Trailblazers are the last 3 years.
