Looks like Shane Battier is more to the Grizzlies than we think..apparently he has a group of loyal fans...."Shane is the face of this team" http://grizzlies.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/880608174/m/4341000251
Battier is a base year player until July 12. Once that expires, the money matches and they can make the deal. Until then, it's only an agreement. Still, tough move, IMHO. DD
This trade is too ridiculous even for Carrol Dawson. He can't be such a terrible negotiator to where he only gets Battier for this trade. Wait for a little while.. then yell
Just to let everyone know, my son said he was going to be the manager for the Rockets and he would NOT give any good players away. I thought that might help some of the grieving. He's only nine right now, so it may be a few years from now...
"There has been a great disturbance in the Force. It's as if million of Rockets fans suddenly cried out in unison." OBI WAN KENOBI said this. OBI FRICKIN WAN KENOBI people.
Sad thing is, the whole time I'm gonna be thinking "ok, maybe they can rescind the trade" when deep down, I know it's not gonna happen. Two weeks of the media making fun of us. It's nothing against Shane, it's just, even when there was an element of unknown, I thought he wasn't a lottery pick. Great college player, but low ceiling, imo.
So Stromile takes the MLE to play with the Rockets and after just 1-YEAR he's getting shipped out (and back to the team where he came from). Yes, he had his mental lapses from time-to-time this past year but still...I dunno. I just thought he should've been given a second chance, especially with JHo as the starting PF.
see its not that i dont like Battier, defensively he helps the team and will be able to hit alot of open shots. But i think for what we gave up, we could have gotten alot more. We didn't have to make a trade at that very moment we could have traded through the next few picks. If we had gotten the 24th pick it would have been paltable, or Hakim Warrick or something, even a future 1st rounder. Gay's percieved value was very high in this draft. This could be a trade we regret within 6 months. Although Swift wasn't the player we all expected he was the first big man off the bench. Mutombo rarely played because swift got alot of his minutes behind Yao as well. As of now our backup bigmen are 40 year old Mutombo and 6'6 second year man Chuck Hayes, lemme tell you i'm on the Hayes bandwagon, but i dont feel confidant with him being the first option behind injury prone, aging Juwon Howard.
The worst of it all is Shane's playoffs stats especially last year's playoffs against Phoenix. Phoenix and Dallas play a similar kind of game - those two will be two of the teams we will have to battle against in the West and he has struggled against. There must be more to this. Wow.
Why make him wait? What is the worse that can happen? Darryl Morey is starting on a bad note and CD is leaving on a dark note. How unfortunate.
I haven't read every page in this thread so i'm not sure whether or not this has been brought up yet...... Battier is a Full BYC player meaning his contract is VERY hard to move. Since draft picks count for $0 and considering Battier's BYC status, what does this mean for us? Howard for Battier doesn't work Swift for Battier doesn't work Hell, Swift AND Howard for Battier doesn't work Clearly, there is a lot more to this trade than is being advertised. None of this really adds up for the Rockets and considering Battier's contract situation, I would love to know just exactly how he is going to be traded? Please, any capologists or more informed posters please try to shed some light on this for me.
please.... if ever there was a time that warranted an outlash, now is that time. explain, if you don't mind, the possible "merits" of this trade compared to the just as possible merits had this trade not been made. truthfully. because - on paper - this deal is completely lopsided. everything we've heard this offseason was completely contradicted with this one move. AND IT DOESN'T ADD UP. not only do we lose depth (at a now very weak position), we also lose youth.
DONT EXPECT THE ROCKETS TO HAVE YOUNG STARS IN THE MAKING TILL LES GETS OFF HIS REAR END AND GETS RID OF JVG. JVG DOESN"T BELIEVE IN YOUNG PLAYERS. HE HATES TO HAVE TO COACH YOUNG TALENT.THE ADDITION OF BATTIER CONTINUES TO KEEP US ONE OF THE WORST TEAMS IN OUR DIVISION. LES YOUR MANAGEMENT TEAM SAYS ONE THING FROM THE SIDE OF THEIR MOUTHS[LIES and they then do the opposite. The Rockets are in trouble enough after last season. Because of our financial position we were supposed to be developing our roster via. the draft, with having to pay Rookies a low salary. Now you are taking on an older over paid role player , this has to be JVG convincing you this is good for the Rockets-IT'S NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well rockets don't need a young star player, but only a third scoring option. isn't that what most people in here want? mcgrady will be entering his 10th season. how many more seasons do you think he could keep playing at his current level? there's not much time to wait for a player to develop.
You guys complained that we lost Sura, and our team had NO heart. Battier gives us that night in night out. He may not be a top notch scorer, but he is adequate. The window of opportunity is shorter now given tmacs back problems. Now is Battier worth giving up gay and swift (who was hideous pickup in my opinion), only the next 3 years will tell.
I agree. I don't think he was given an oppurtunity to succeed. He didn't get the minutes because of JVG's favortism of dull, unathletic players(Bowen,Howard, etc.)
interestingly enough, nba.com draft board does not mention anything about r.gay going to memphis while it does have in parentheses all the other trades portland, chic, minn did......there is some hope!!!!!!!!!!!!
Battier has heart, but you don't give up star talent for heart. You get the Bob Suras and Battiers through free agency and trades with your lesser talent. Their value as players are always underappreciated. San Antonio and Miami employed this and did not give up their young talent.
