I agree that's part of it (although good luck getting businesses to agree).

I did a whole paper on the impact of remittances in rural Latin America and how it basically destroys countries and families. Including hefty fines with something like the bracero program would be extremely helpful in preventing economic migrants from bringing their families or coming illegally. People come here as a seasonal farm worker, and go back home where their US paycheck is going to go a lot further. The main spike in migration from the Southern border is largely a result of both the drug wars and the fact that it simply wasn't worth it to criss-cross illegally anymore for most agrarian workers. Particularly if you weren't crossing into a border state on the Southwest.

Instead, we're just going to get theatrics from state governors, increased money to the CBP and DEA and more stories like this one. Because the policy I just described would be DOA in any discussion.

Yeah that's exactly what happens. Especially when there push-pull factors are there that basically force you to leave. You see this not just here but all the folks who drown in the Mediterranean or who pay smugglers in Libya to go from sub-Saharan Africa to Europe.

There's too many damn people on the planet and not nearly enough money and resources in most countries. Unless we radically change how we live (which most won't do) this problem is only going to increase.

Im baffled by this response and the response from people like Gregg Abbott that this is a result of bad border policy.

If anything this proves how difficult the current government and border patrol is making it to cross illegally. It’s strict enough to where there are many that actually want easier legal options so that it deters this type of risk. So I don’t really know what Gregg Abbott and others are whining about because this is what’ll happen if the US is ultra strict at the border or doesn’t provide pathways for legal immigration… which is what the GOP runs on.

Also from what I gather from friends of mine who work for CBP, the vast part of the job isn't like patrolling the desert. It's working ports and doing customs checks. That was the loophole used to deploy them in Oregon..most CBP people work at airports and ports because of the sheer volume of physical goods that come into the country. My friend in San Ysidro says most of his busts are drug smugglers and Americans bringing underage girls back for sex work.

That’s a big reason why I really despise and take every opportunity to snuff out the QAnon influence with my friends and family on the right. There are real problems with human trafficking that need to better addressed, but the topic is weaponized politically on the right with bizarre theories of democrats in eyes wide shut sex parties etc. etc. It just diminishes the topic and makes it harder to address the real issues happening in trafficking which has an opposite flow and often it’s children of color that are impacted more. I saw a stat that it’s like 70% more likely that your child is abducted if they are brown skinned.

Imagine how frightening that must be for a Hispanic mother taking your kids to the park or Walmart or whatnot. But no instead the American right is focused on pizza restaurants and Hillary Clinton conspiracies and Hunter Biden who is a private equity guy.

Its a natural growth of the old chain email about gangs shooting people who flash their brights or the idea that the average trafficking victim is like a soccer mom at a Walmart in Plano.

A friend of mine actually worked for UGA's center against human trafficking and also as a lawyer fot child sex victims and he regularly got calls accusing him of being QAnon.

final reported death toll is 53 people

    4 people have been charged

Four people have been arrested and charged in connection with the tragedy in San Antonio where 53 migrants were found dead in a tractor-trailer, according to the justice department.

Homero Zamorano Jr., 45, was arrested on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in the incident, according to a release from the Department of Justice.

On June 27, Homeland Security Investigators responded to the scene of a human smuggling event involving a tractor-trailer and 64 people suspected of entering the U.S. illegally, according to documents.

At the scene, San Antonio police found multiple people, some still inside the trailer, some on the ground and in a nearby bush, and many of them dead.

Among the dead were 27 people from Mexico, 14 from Honduras, seven from Guatemala, and two from El Salvador, he said. One of the victims had no identification, Garduño said.

Zamorano was apprehended after trying to pretend he was one of the migrants, but HSI agents said that video from Laredo Border Patrol confirmed he was the truck driver as his clothing matched what was seen on the footage, according to the DOJ.

Zamorano, who is from Brownsville but lives in Pasadena, is charged by criminal complaint with one count of alien smuggling resulting in death.

The second person charged is 28-year-old Christian Martinez, who was arrested on Tuesday in Palestine, Texas. He is charged with one count of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens resulting in death.

According to the justice department, a warrant for Zamorano's cell phone revealed a conversation between him and Martinez, concerning the smuggling event.

Juan Claudio D'Luna-Mendez, 23, and Juan Francisco D'Luna-Bilbao, 48, both citizens of Mexico, were also arrested, according to the DOJ.

According to the DOJ, documents show the registration for the tractor-trailer used in the attempted alien smuggling event came back to a residence in San Antonio.

Officers surveilled the residence and saw the two men leaving in separate trucks. D'Luna-Mendez and D'Luna-Bilbao were both arrested during a traffic stop.

The tragedy in San Antonio occurred at a time when huge numbers of migrants have been coming to the U.S., many of them taking perilous risks to cross swift rivers and canals and scorching desert landscapes. Migrants were stopped nearly 240,000 times in May, up by one-third from a year ago.

With little information about the victims, desperate families of migrants from Mexico and Central America frantically sought word of their loved ones.

Several survivors were in critical condition with injuries such as brain damage and internal bleeding, according to Rubén Minutti, the Mexico consul general in San Antonio.
