Bottom line is if Schobel outperforms Smith, he'll be getting the snaps. Smith might start the season but if Schobel wreaks havoc on situational passing downs, there is no way he shouldn't be given a chance to start.

It's not like we're coming coming in with a lock-down defense that has 11 starters in place. I don't care how much we paid Antonio, we're not good enough to keep him in the starting lineup just because he's supposed to be a starter. I thought he did an okay job last year, but Schobel's numbers speak for themselves.

EDIT: And by the way, Frank Bush and Bill Kollar will do most of the judging on who is going to get the snaps on the defensive line. Obviously Kubiak has an overriding authority, but for the most part he lets his defensive coaches run the show.

Well if Kubiak likes his fairly unproductive line so much that he isn't interested in upgrading it then he will deserve it when he gets fired.

I absolutely agree with you and justtxyank that if Schobel dominates, of course he should get the starters job, but why put so much into a young DE while he's rotting on the bench sitting behind a nearly retired 33 year old veteran. I doubt that would sit well with Antonio Smith and of course would cause some sort of controversy in the locker room.

Unless Bush, Kollar, and Kubiak (which I doubt Kubiak with his mild mannered character) supress it there are going to be some unhappy Texans in the locker room and mostly just because they're "boys" with Smith.

Either way, if they sign Schobel he should definitely be given the chance at starters PT. The way Kubiak is approaching it, he's going to be loyal to the players he has.

Antonio Smith is not some young kid, he's like 29 years old. And again, I see your point, but if the team isn't interested in upgrade because they don't want to make a 29 year old above average (too nice?) player who while solid isn't overly productive unhappy...well...they suck.

Defensive lineman rotate frequently enough that Smith will still get plenty of snaps, especially since he would move inside on 3rd down. I remember when Jethro Franklin was here a couple of years ago, we literally rotated in at least two lineman on every play. I don't think Bush/Kollar do it quite as much but it definitely happens to keep guys fresh.

I hope people don't get the impression that I think Smith is anywhere close to Schobel but they are different types of players anyway. Schobel is undersized but uses leverage and gets to the QB Period. He's what we need across from Mario. If you want to compare then compare him to Mario because their both DE's.

Schobel could be the miracle break that actually falls our way. Who knows how effective (10 sacks) be here at his age but he'll be a HUGE upgrade and turn this D-line into one of the best in the AFC. It's a no-brainer and that's what scares me....

what a terrible article.... it's pretty much akin to saying you can't fit a mercedes in the garage because you already have a hyundai, kia, and '82 datsun in there.

Yeah, if it comes down to Tim Bulman vs Aaron Schobel, I think we all know who wins that battle...

or maybe the more logical thing would be to say that kubiak is just giving standard coaching lip service. not sure how you're taking stock in what he's saying BEFORE we sign him... did you expect kubiak to come out and throw a current starter under the bus for a player that isn't even on the team yet? of course he's going to be "loyal" to his current players right NOW.

2 time PRO BOWLER coming off a double digits sack season.
    or
    fairly serviceable interior lineman.

I like chemistry and professionalism and making players feel comfortable. But we saw what direction that can go with the David Carr route.

The Texans must go all out for this guy. We can't assume that going from 9-7 to 10-6 is an automatic. We need another disruptive player on def, especially since we'll be missing Cush the first four games.

he has a bit of mileage, but is it worth a fat contract when we hav

    mario, antonio and barwin...

it just sounds like another eric moulds.. yea he may perform a bit...

but in the long run nobody is going to remember him...
i wouldn't be upset if we got him..

but hey im not makin' the calls in the front office...

i mean there must be a reason for the bills not wanting him back?

Are you nuts? First, where do you get a "fat contract" from? He wants to come home to play for his hometown team, he is not going to come at a large price. Secondly, the combination of Mario, Smith, and Barwin got very little pressure on the quarterback last season, why would you not want to add a guy with double digit sack numbers and a pro-bowl caliber player just last season? Eric Moulds? He was already a washed up has been when he signed with the Texans, not to mention he played a completely different position. Schobel was an elite pass rusher in the league last season. You would have to be crazy not to want him on this team. How exactly do you see him as a washed up has been? He had more sacks than ANYONE on the Texans roster last season, that includes Mario.....

Uncle Bob has the 10th most valuable franchise in pro sports, and they haven't even done anything yet. Signing this guy is a no brainer, even if the Texans have to overpay a wee bit.

    Get er done Bob!
