    :(

Now seriously this sucks. The Texans have all the pieces in place but the secondary is young and a pass rush boost would really solidify things.

C'mon McNair compromise and split the difference up the offer by $1M.

Game 1 versus the Colts will determine if he will get signed.

Can't they put in some incentive-based escalators? Say Schobel gets an extra $200k for every sack over 10 that he records this year.

The Texans are one of the most profitable teams in America. They "could" do whatever they wanted in order to sign him. The problem has nothing to do with money. I said this at the beginning of the offseason. Bob McNair is one of the strongest owners in this labor dispute, and he stands firmly against the player's union on financial issues. He is towing the line and has all offseason.

It honestly pisses me off that they could, for a single uncapped year, go all in and reward the fans for sticking with them and lining their pockets for a decade of mediocrity.

Sign Schobel for a one year deal, make a trade to bring in Haynesworth. Instantly you have a defensive line that is almost on par with the Vikings, and a two All Pro LBs behind it. That, paired with a top 5 offense, would instantly make us contenders.

And then you have McNair taking sports management advice from Drayton. Spend to win....but win just enough to keep the merchandise and ticket sales up.

I love these boards full of over reacting! Kubiak is a Shannahan disciple and if Shanny is having all these problems with Haynesworth, do you really think Kubes would want anything to do with him? Are we really taking a blurb in the Fort Worth Telegram as the final word when insiders from around the league say it is untrue? If he really wants to come back and all he wants is more money, the Texans probably will cave! Relax it will all be OK!

Who are the two All-Pro LBs you speak of?

Cushing wasn't All Pro last year and Ryans hasn't been since 2007.

They are both All Pro level players . As he was trying to give them an approximate quantitative value in his formula for us being contenders, I suggest at best you're splitting hairs.

uncapped year is for one year ... albert is signed beyond this year, so when we go back to the salary structure .. that contract will be more hated than the carlos lee deal .. under drayton, astros have made it to the world series once and the nlcs once. In addition they have won their divisions, put together a string of playoff appearances signed big name FA's such as clemes, petite, lee. resigned their big name FA such as oswalt, berkman, bags, biggio. Been favorites (like the year when we had randy johnson) to make it to the world series. In the next 8 years if the texans make the playoffs.

In the next 10 years if the texans make the playoffs 6 times, win their division 4 of those times, make it to the superbowl once and to the afc championship game once, and finish 2nd in their division 3 of the 4 years they dont make the playoffs like the astros did from 1997 to 2006.. id be happy ..

That contract is already largely paid off - there's only about $10M in guaranteed money left. It's a very team-friendly contract at this point.

Fat Albert isn't a team leader, isn't a great guy to look up to, but his issue was being converted to NT (all work, no stats). Since I don't see us going to a 3-4 any time soon, I don't see it as an issue. He'd instantly, even giving half hearted effort, make our D-Line formidable. Alternatively, we can continue to watch Okoye get popped 3 yards back every down.

hayneworth is an amazing talent but the guy isnt motivated to play. He has a track record of only showing up in contract years. Don't want him infecting this team.

Agreed emjohn. The Titans are now allegedly trying to work out a trade with the Skins.

I posted a thread this offseason about the potential of trading for Fat Albert, and you're right, the skins have already payed $23 million of his guarantees. There is just over $9 Million guaranteed remaining. If I remember correctly, counting non-guaranteed money, Albert will make $6.5/year for the remainder of the deal. That is unbelievably cost-effective, even if he somewhat performs below par. Even last year, when he did play below expectations, both ends on the 'Skins finished the season with 10 or more sacks and neither of them are on the ablitity level of Mario Williams. I think the positives of acquiring him would greatly outweigh the negatives.

I agree with an earlier poster, however, that said due to Shanny and Kubiak's relationship (among other things), a deal is unlikely. I doubt seriously that Kubes would not take his mentor's advice on a player like Albert. Then again, if the Titans make a serious push for him, maybe Rick Smith lays it down and views trading for Albert as an opportunity to stregthen our team at the expense of one of our rivals.

Sorry for the double post, but here's the link on the Titans/Hayensworth story:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5542035

And, to those who questions Albert's motivation now that he's paid, I get the feeling that whoever trades for him will get a VERY motivated player that wants desperately to prove Mike Shannahan wrong. Although it was deserved, Coach Shannahan publicly embarassed him, all but questioning his manhood in front of his teammates and the entire football-watching nation. I think he'd play like a man possessed for at least next season.

He'd also play like mad man against the Titans twice a year, which for me would be worth the price of his other transgressions.

I think its funny that people are impatient with okoye and want albert, who in his first 5 years put up similar numbers to okoye (9 sacks in those years combined) I bet if he was drafted by us some of the people would have wanted him gone at the start of his fourth season as well. im not saying okoye is going to turn into a albert haynesworth and become all pro in his 6th season, im just saying we want to get a player, who put up very similar stats his first 3 year in the league, to replace okoye

While Albert is certainly a solid pass rusher, the reason he was the best DT in the league is his ability to clog the lane and stop the run to go along with being able to rush the passer. In his first few years Haynesworth was pushing the line with the best of them even though he wasn't getting a lot of sacks. Okoye hasn't been particularly good against either the run or the pass so far in his career.
