There are more successful 30+ players playing lineman than skill positions (other than QB)...thats why you see players like Zgonina still play well up to age 40. You'll also see plenty of offensive lineman play well at 35. You cant say that about RB, WR, CB, S, etc...

So, if anything, Schobel should still be quite effective at his age, given his position compared to other positions.

Sounds a lot more like a Brett Favre retirement.

Wants to up his value and sit out as long as he can.

He'll be playing the NFL this year.

They definitely can last longer, since they don't rely on speed and athletic ability quite as much (though the modern day DE is a different breed), but that doesn't mean it's easy or fun to take a beating for 10+ seasons. You have to remember that they're getting hit every single play.

I think Schobel has made his money and probably has lost some motivation. He might just be one of those guys that doesn't really LOVE the game and just played it because he was good at it, and now he's tired of the grind. Like what has happened with Barry Sanders, Robert Smith, etc.

seems like he was not really interested in playing. If he is not fully into football right now and only willing to be a situational player, it's probably a good thing he is not coming here.

Well, I guess some guys thrive off the pressure and some guys wilt like a wet noodle...

I'm glad we didn't sign him.

Schobel was a beast at TCU and was a beast for the Bills. The guy gave 100% every time he played and deserves to retire if he wants to.

Would have loved to have had him on the team, but he's made a ****pile of money and sounds like he's burnt out.

Most of those guys realize at some point they really do love football...ala Ricky Williams....

If I were the Texans I would keep his number on their rolodex.

Its preseason football. A couple of years ago the Lions went 4-0 in the preseason and ended up 0-16 in the preseason. The Colts always look terrible in the preseason. Sure Schobel would be a good pickup but you can't really draw too many conclusions with preseason football. Besides, Schobel was pretty adamant that it was it and he didn’t want to do the work needed to get back in football season. The Texans 1st team defense was dominate last week and they sucked this week. They are probably somewhere between.

Schobel hates training camp and apparently preseason as well. He was just waiting for the regular season and is now ready to sign.
