Aaron Schobel was reportedly informed that the Bills intend to release him, and he's interested in talking to other teams.

Schobel was due a whopping $6.025 million base salary from the Bills this season, so they opted to sever ties after he waffled one too many times. If Schobel is granted free agency, the Texans and Patriots figure to be among his most ardent pursuers. Rumors have surfaced that the Texas native wants to finish his career in Houston. The Pats, tormented by Schobel in the AFC East for years, could also use a veteran pass rusher.

Sign him up. Schobel would be a great veteran addition to the team, especially since Mario's hip is a little banged up right now and it would also allow Antonio to move inside more when necessary.

I'd take him...in his limited time last year, he still got 6.5 sacks and was quite productive when on the field.

    Another Roosevelt Colvin type signing?

I mean seriously when have we NOT got a FA that wasn't already washed up and way out of his prime?

I'm not saying Schoebel is but it's just always the Texans luck to bring someone in that is pretty much all dried up.

No way Texans trade for Schobel. He'd have to be a free agent for them to be interested, and the price would have to be right.

4 contributors on the current roster...

    Antonio Smith
    Kevin Walter
    Bernard Pollard
    Joel Dressen

You're not saying he is dried up but he is dried up?

I figured these guys would be brought up, yet the only man on that list that you can actually say absolutely contributed was Kevin Walter. Smith hasn't been worth the money and honestly the Texans had some luck fall their way with Pollard. He still has another full season to show he is fully capable of manning the strong safety position.

Dressen was a back up to OD and.... Mark Bruener? Nuff said on that one.

No not yet, until he actually throws on the pads for the Texans then magically he will de-volve and not do a darn thing for us. If he signs with any other team he will be a great pick up. Just the way it goes......

He had 10 sacks last year. He is still very productive and like John McClain said, he is very close to Texans D-Line coach Bill Kollar. I don't see how the Texans wouldn't be interested in him with the lack of pass rush by the Texans.

Is there any question, of course you sign this guy and the minute he is released by the Bills the Texans should have a contract in hand waiting to get it signed...shoot have the dam locker ready as of now!

Sign him up. Someone else who could pressure Manning.

Yes. We need another veteran on D. It gets us closer to being super bowl contenders.

We have crazy potential this upcoming season :)

    He's listed as linebacker?

While I ENTIRELY agree that the FA signings have been much more miss than hit, Walter has contributed, Smith has contributed (though overpaid, but contributed, which was the point in argument), and Pollard is probably the best FA signing by the current regime. Luck? I guess...if it was also bad luck that some of the other FA signings didn't work out.

In either case, all three of those guys are FA signings that have contributed very positively to the team.

I would have liked them to have taken a more aggressive approach with a player like Leigh Bodden this past offseason, but they would have had to overpay, I think.

In either case, the team needs something like a Schobel getting cut and the Texans signing him to a reasonable deal. Short of the Pollard "luck", they haven't had a lot of that kind of luck.

This team needs really good veterans to fuse with the young amazing talent*. Moving mario and smith inside on 3rd downs, then unleashing aaron schobel and Barwin, who will be the next schobel will be deadly to offenses across the league. The d-line rotation would be sick.

    * I guess that means we won't sign him.

Bills defensive end Schobel interested in Texans

    By JOHN McCLAIN
    Copyright 2010 Houston Chronicle

If the Buffalo Bills end up releasing veteran defensive end Aaron Schobel, and he decides he wants to play for a 10th season, expect him to place the Texans at the top of his list of teams he wants to play for.

Schobel, 32, grew up in Columbus, about 70 miles west of Houston, and played at TCU. He owns a ranch outside Columbus.

More important, Schobel is close friends with his former Buffalo defensive line coach, Bill Kollar. Kollar enters his second season as the Texans' assistant head coach/defensive line.

One of Schobel's close friends said Monday he would love to be reunited with Kollar and play for the Texans.

The Texans haven't given any indication they're interested in Schobel. They can't comment on Schobel because he's under contract to the Bills. A person with knowledge of the situation said the Texans wouldn't trade for Schobel because he makes $8 million, and they have Mario Williams, Antonio Smith and Connor Barwin as their top-three defensive ends.

Under new coach Chan Gailey, the Bills have switched to a 3-4 defense. Schobel has been a 4-3 defensive end his entire career with Buffalo.
Schobel had 10 sacks last season and told the Bills he planned to retire. He's on their Reserved/Did Not Report list.

Bills general manager Buddy Nix told Buiffalo reporters Monday there's no chance Schobel will return to the Bills.

"He will stay on the Reserved/Did Not Report list until he makes a decision on whether he’s retiring or if he might want to play somewhere else," Nix said.

"He’s not going to be here, and, hopefully, those guys (young players) will step up.

"The decision up to camp was that he could still report. And he had not told us whether he was retiring or whether he’d report. So it was a point that when he didn’t show up that we’d gone as far as we could go.

"We’re trying to get our team ready to play this year, and we just thought it was time for us to move forward, and we’re really working some good players at that position. Which really didn’t have anything to do with it, but we’re trying to get ready to play in 2010, and we think that’s what we needed to do."

That would be a great signing. They could definitely use his pass rushing abilities

    10 sacks last year?!

    *faints*

The Texans need to make the call! Schobel would be great to have here. That's simply more depth and formations we could use on our D-Line. Move Marion and Smith to the inside with Barwin and Schobel on the outside. Or, have Mario and Schobel on the outside, with Smith and Mitchell on the inside. So many other formations, too. Maybe a 3-4 formation with Mario, Smith, and Schobel with Barwin as a linebacker? I like it. Not to mention he'd bring in more veteran leadership to this young defense.

The Bills are moving to a 3-4 defense and would've moved Schobel to OLB.

All of those guys contributed to the team in a positive way, obviously some more than others. But this team is so close to being a playoff team that we really need to add any help that is available, especially to a position where production has been very inconsistent.

Have there been some "misses" in our past FA acquisitions? Absolutely, but that shouldn't deter any team from signing a FA if they believe he can contribute to the team.

I would absolutely love Schobel on this team.
