he won't get it b/c westbrook is playing just as good if not better than durant this entire year. durant hasn't taken that next step that i thought he would. if orlando wins a ton to end the year, dwight should get it. he's playing on another level right now.
As much as we all hate the Mavs, it has to be Dirk. He is shooting 52.5% from the field and 42.4% from 3 while averaging 22.8 ppg. His team is 42-9 when he plays and would be up with San Antonio if he hadn't missed 9 games. Not to mention Dirk being 6-0 against San Antonio, LA, Miami, and Boston...
Rose or Dwight should get it. Dirk could be a darkhouse just because it's apparent what he means to the team that everytime he's out the Mavs have been terrible this season, then go on a 10 game winning streak when he's back. Anyways Rose looks like he's possessed in the 4th quarter, he might be having a mini slump but man can ball.
Lebron being unclutched twice and losing those game doesn't help his cause either. Can't really cherry pick a couple of bad game when there's still 20+ games to go. It will come down to the wire between Rose and Lebron when all is said and done.
it's not just a couple of bad games. rose has shot under 40% in 6 of his last 7 games. his team's great D allows them to withstand rose's poor offensive games so he can stay in the MVP race. but if you actually watch him, rose is really playing poorly. it's fine to have 1-2 bad games; it's normal. but you better bounce back right away. lebron or dwight rarely has 1 or even 2 bad games in a row. dwight howard should be higher up
CHI is 2nd in D, the Heat 4th. Not that big a difference. Where there IS a difference is in the number of max players on each team. LBJ has 2, while Rose and Dirk have none. LBJ has no business being in the MVP discussion this year. NONE. He plays on one of the most (if not the most) underachieving teams in the league. Dirk's team has a better record than LBJ's, for crying out loud. Rose was without Noah for 30 games and is neck and neck with Miami. Is this thread a joke? You might be the only poster that would start it (along with the dude who started the Heat Season thread). What's next, a thread about T-Mac's MVP chances?
To be fair that was just one shot in one game. If that was the measuring stick for MVP, then Channing Frye is currently ahead of Rose
"He plays on one of the most (if not the most) underachieving teams in the league?" Really? only fans think so, Pat Riley said himself the team is work in progress and you will not see the best of them for a couple of years. They didn't build the team to win this year, but to build a team to compete for the next 5-6 years, winning this year would just be a bonus.
Bolded the totally clueless part. Riles, like any sensible GM or coach, will downplay expectations. What else would you expect him to say?
this is some of the worst logic there is. then care to explain to me how magic and bird won their MVPs when they played with 2-3 HOFs on their team? you have got to be kidding me. underachieving? by whose standards? fans? him and dwight howard are playing the best ball out of anybody in the L. those 2 deserve to be in the forefront of the MVP conversation.
I wasn't an MVP voter in the 80s, so I don't have to explain anything to you. But I do know that Bird turned those guys into HOF players. Underachieving by any standard really. When 3 top 10 players are on the same team, they should win every single game they play. If they don't, they're underachieving. Stats aren't the only factor in an MVP vote. Sorry 'bout that, "t_mac1".
bird turned mchale into a HOF player? i'm going to assume you mean magic turned kareem into an MVP in one year? oh lord. i never said stats aren't the only factor. but when 2 teams have similar records, and you are comparing the best players, stats can be a deciding factor. and please, i'm not going to argue that "should win every game they are playing" crap. that's just ignorant.
You're ignoring the crux of TheFreak's argument. You're essentially claiming all other possible factors being equal (which you erroneously make this assumption based on the similar records), one should then look to the individual stats. But all other factors are NOT equal--there's a glaring difference in that, as TheFreak mentioned, Lebron has 2 other top 10 players starting alongside him whereas Rose/Dirk each have ZERO. Whether you want to admit this or not and downplay the significance in your mind, the fact is that this is an enormously large discrepancy between the two teams, and thus between both players' performances as MVP candidates. The fact that Rose has kept the Bulls' record at about the same as the Heat, with the same competition and vastly inferior lineup (we already decided that the Defenses of both teams were comparable but individually the Heat have the superior roster by virtue of having three top ten players in the league), that to me elevates Rose well above any of the players on the Heat (especially your infallible, omnipotent Lebron) as an MVP choice.
Don't waste your time debating with him. He will always bring up useless stats to back up his arguments.
Rose is likely going to be suffering those ulcers his whole life, so the bouts of inconsistency...will be quite consistent occurances.
When Magic won his MVPs Kareem was past him prime hell he was 39 when Magic won his first one. Yes Kareem was a HOF but it was because of what he did in early in his career not because of what he did while playing with Magic. So that would mean Magic wasnt playing with a top 5 player like Lebron is now. Yes Bird won his MVPs with some pretty good player, but no way was any of them a top 5 player at the time.
I'm interested in this topic. I haven't watched the Bulls much this season but Rose has been on my fantasy team all year. His shooting percentage is almost always sub-par and often straight up horrendous. And while he often gets double digit assists, 7 turnovers isn't unusual either.
What is Riley supposed to say, "I signed the three biggest FA of the summer, have one of the most stacked teams in the NBA, but don't expect us to win when it counts."?
