Mitt Romney does the impossible: Gets Brits to stop moaning and start cheering about Olympics

Mitt Romney may be just what the London Olympics needed.

In little more than 24 hours in London, the U.S. presidential candidate has gotten Britons to stop complaining about bumper-to-bumper traffic, cringing about cost overruns and fretting about shoddy security — and instead start taking pride in their country’s long-awaited day in the sun.

    ...

Those sentiments are a quick about-face from the weeks of moaning many Britons have engaged in prior to the games, which begin with the opening ceremony Friday night.

For months, the nation has been awash in complaints — from taxi drivers angry over special traffic lanes for Olympics VIPS, to slack-jawed travelers staring down long lines at immigration, to commuters apoplectic about being asked to rethink their journey to avoid the crush of Olympic tourists, to residents alarmed that surface-to-air missiles have been placed on their roofs to fight terrorism.

Even the heavens have come in for a browbeating, with the Times of London publishing an editorial recently demanding an end to weeks of rain.

“It is a British sport,” Labour lawmaker David Winnick told The Associated Press on Friday. “We always complain.”

Yes, it was a flap for Romney. Not really important, but it is telling, that their Prime Minister who is also a conservative could have been an ally of Romney's but is now at odds with him in the press. Also Murdoch owned papers are lambasting Romney in England.

He's not very diplomatic, and his strange awkwardness is doing him no favors.

If Mitt gets on the nerves of the British so easily, probably our staunchest ally and a country very similar to us, how will he deal with other countries whom we need cooperation from? The man makes Bush look like Hamilton Fish.

Huntsman wouldn't have had this problem.

The Brits are the ones with the problems. The once mighty British empire is now reduced to pale shadows. Lefties and PC have ruined Britain just like the rest of Europe. Mitten is simply speaking the truth, I'd bet you more Britons would agree with Mitt but too afraid to speak out.

What Mitt said that got the Brits against him had nothing to do with lefties or PC. It had to do with their preparation for the Olympics.

    Please stay on topic.

They should love the USA as the only country hated more than theirs. Just look how Canadians dislike the Queen for being on their money. You're welcome.

    edit: oops

Normally they would, but Romney turned what should be easy support into animosity with his awkward lack of grace, and poor manners.

correct. They still hold a favorable opinion of Obama, The former President and Prime Minister were close despite being on different sides of the political spectrum. GB and the U.S. are pretty tight allies in case you missed it.

Did anyone catch the tribute to socialized medicine in the opening ceremonies? I wish they added that just this week for Mitt Romney. ;)

You'll have to pardon the aside, but socialized medicine is the DEVIL.

There's not like a consistent theme or anything here. Maybe Romneyshambles needs some of that love.
