The "fracture" is to get him some rest and a roster spot. He will be back after the break. Why trust the additional imaging now?
Trying real hard to figure out the insane messaging on injuries. A couple potential thoughts: Of course the potential exists that initial MRIs are legitimately misleading due to inflammation obscuring things. However, we don’t consistently see this with other teams. Why is that? The Astros might be intentionally optimistic initially in order to buy time to discuss trades with other teams without losing leverage. However, we haven’t seen any actual trades made near these injuries. To your point, the Astros may be using injuries as a way to rest players without losing a roster spot. The way the roster has been managed, even down in the minor leagues, makes me think that the Astros believe they can get a competitive advantage by managing their rosters to maximize player health (with phantom injuries to provide extra rest and timing returns for August) at the big league level going into September and maximizing perceived prospect value in July. This is what makes the most sense to me. I just really hope they’re not doing anything that runs afoul of MLB rules.
How long can the Stros hold up? Pena is so important to this team. We are getting an entirely new team after the all star break. DD
Definitely time for Yainer and Walker to step it up. Really tired of the 3 month slump from both of those guys.
Probably be out a few year . They didn't mention ? He actually needs a spleen transplant too . Oh and his dog ate the rib , he has to wait for a new one to grow
Position and batting order going forward. Bench Singleton vs lefties 3b- Paredes CF- Meyers DH- Altuve RF- Smith 1b- singleton LF- Hummel SS- Dubon C- Diaz 2b- Guillotine murderers row
If they bring him up for a week or two, does it start the clock on him? What is the rule on the clock. If they bring him up to get a taste of the big leagues and soak up knowledge from the guys up here, would it be a bad thing?
Yes, even if he is just brought up for 1 day. There are 2 primary considerations. First, adding a player to the 26 man roster starts his accrual of MLB service time; players typically reach arbitration after 3 years of service time and reach free agency once they get 6 seasons of service time. Second, adding a player to the active roster, even for 1 day, requires adding him to the 40 man roster, from which they cannot be removed without exposing them to waiver claims by other teams; a player can only be optioned to the minors in 3 seasons. There is also a lesser consideration that bringing Matthews up now likely makes him ineligible for a prospect promotion incentive pick next season; if he is kept down and makes Top 100 lists this offseason, and starts next season in the majors, and wins rookie of the year, Houston would receive an extra 1st round draft pick. That is all very unlikely, but worth considering. But the real implications are starting his free agency/arbitration clock and having to keep him on the 40 man roster.
I didn't realize the rule about the 40 man roster. Melton is now on the 40 man roster? We would have to waive someone to bring Brice up?
Any updates on Brendan Rodgers? He hasn't played at SS very much since being called up, but it was what he was drafted as and he was moved to 2B because of Trevor Story.
Or transfer someone to 60-day DL (Yordan is a short-term option. Dubin is the long-term option). But we also have Leon, France, Javier, Arrighetti, & Garcia due to come off the 60-day in the next 1-2 months.
I agree but my patience concerning Walker is almost completely gone. I love Yainer but I am starting to think this might just be a bad offensive season for him. Obviously, Walker and Diaz could turn it around in the 2nd half but I’m starting not to count on it.
That's not an issue in my scenario since I'm talking about bringing him up just for a couple of weeks to soak up some knowledge and maybe play a couple of games or get a few at bats in a game that has been decided in one way or the other. Can we send Yordan to the 60 day IL retroactively. The clock starting when he was hurt?
Diaz has done an amazing job calling games. Remember that Caratini catches for McCullers. Diaz catches for almost everyone else. DIaz is an above average bat for a catcher in a down year like this year. It doesn't excuse him for swinging at everything but I'm not looking to replace him. Walker is playing a position that should be a plus bat. It's one step away from DH. Why the hell does Altuve have to be a midget. In any other world, he would be a 1st baseman or DH right now. DH isn't a option long-term since Alvarez is can't walk across the field without the risk of injury.
This team is openly considering marching out an injured player out there despite it's horrific history in trying to do that since Verlander's Tommy John surgery.
