Sucks. Hate to see hear people that are that down... regardless how bad their own personal 'invisible touch' was. Sususeriousy a downer. Money and fame don't always equal happiness. Of course, Peter Gabriel put out the better Genesis stuff, and he's not all that cheerful either.
you can't hurry love http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20219844,00.html Phil Collins Divorce Settlement a Record Breaker By Stephen M. Silverman and Caris Davis Monday August 18, 2008 07:35 AM EDT Phil Collins Divorce Settlement a Record Breaker | Phil Collins The third time was certainly not the charm for Phil Collins, who's facing yet another pricey divorce. After six years of marriage and two children, the musician's former wife, Swiss-born Orianne Cevey, 35, has received a $46.76 million cash payout from Collins, 57, reports Britain's Daily Mirror. The record settlement – Britain's biggest ever in a celebrity divorce – tops by some $2 million what Paul McCartney gave Heather Mills earlier this year. Collins is no stranger to expensive breakups. Second wife Jill Tavelman received $34 million after he ended their relationship by fax in 1994. In all, according to a Daily Telegraph tally, Collins's divorces have cost him $84 million – nearly a third of his estimated $280 fortune.
There must be some misunderstanding...There must be some kind of mistake... Really sux to shell out all that cash for ex's...I'd be depressed too...
I got some money in my pocket, about ready to burn I don't remember where I got it, I gotta get it to you So please answer the phone, cos I keep calling, but you're never home What am I gonna do
What do you think about him as a drummer? I was told that he is one of the all-time greats as a drummer. Too bad that he seems to be so down, he used to be my favorite artist when I was really young. I still like many of his (and Genesis') classics.
sad. when you think about today's music with Hillary Duff, Miley Cyrus and the throngs of Disney/Nickelodeon graduates, would it be so bad to have Phil Collins back?
none of them has been able to create a song that unites people like this one: <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/n9xY_cPenSs?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/n9xY_cPenSs?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
As Phil once sang on "No Jacket Required", "I Don't Wanna Know" if he is having suicidal thoughts. Seriously, that sucks. I think it is a combination of all of his failed marriages, getting slammed by the critics (especially for his solo stuff), and him getting close to 60 that has gotten him down. It's funny but you will find 2 different types of Genesis fans: 1) Those who were fans of the Peter Gabriel era (which went up to "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway") 2) Those who were fans when Phil became lead singer (which started with the album, "A Trick of the Tail") It is rare to find the Genesis fan that actually likes BOTH eras. But it is a common misconception that once Gabriel left and Phil became the lead singer that they became a pop group. It probably wasn't until the 6th album in with Phil as lead singer that Genesis favored more pop than art rock and that was in the album, "Genesis" (the so-called shapes album or the "Mama" album). Definitely by the time they released "Invisible Touch" was that the case. Yet the long version of "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" was progressive in feeling (it was over 8 minutes long) and there was an instrumental thrown on that album as well. It was only when schlock like "In Too Deep" did a lot of the hardcore Genesis fans started accusing Phil of leading the group down a path similar to his solo stuff. But really they were still quite progressive once he took over, especially on the first 2 albums because they had Steve Hackett. I do think it is fun to listen to a Genesis song and then a Phil solo song and see if you can guess who is the right artist (especially from the period of '83 through '92). Phil's first 2 solo albums were somewhat dark ("In the Air Tonight" being the poster child of this) but gradually started drifting towards a more pop/r&b/motown influenced direction. I used to post on a Pink Floyd forum several years ago and everybody there was up in arms when Phil was quoted saying that he found Floyd "boring", lol.
I have suicidal thoughts every day, so I guess I can sympathize. On the other hand, if I had Phil Collins' money, I might be depressed less frequently. I don't know if money buys happiness, but I sure would not mind testing out the hypothesis.
I forgot to mention this although tinman had referenced it earlier: I believe it was his 2nd marriage but he decided to end that one by delivering the divorce via fax, LOL. I always thought that was cold. I don't know if she was the one or it was his first wife that was cheating on him with a decorator. Supposedly, a lot of the songs on his first 2 solo albums (especially the 2nd) dealt with his first marriage ending.
