I went to Roger's high school. I'm looking forward to the Astros. The Rockets have been such a disappoinment. Good luck, Astros.
Uncle Drayton (we're gunna be champions) was on 610 this morning. He was talking as if Clemens to Houston was pretty much a done deal. Interesting...
So did I. The 'Woods isn't always the place to be proud of in regards to sports. My freshman year, our football team went 0-10. Very nice. I graduated in '96. What about you? Anything new there to report? Kinda random, but Roger Clemens' nephew goes to school at the school I work at up in Georgetown. Last year at some point during the spring, I think he came up to the school to eat with his nephew on his nephew's birthday. I remember walking by the office, and just thinking, "Ummmmm....Obviously I've been working too hard, and have grown delusional, because I could swear that I see Roger Clemens about 10 feet away from me." I might still be delusional, but it was him, and I went up and shook his hand and told him that I went to Spring Woods and UT as well. Anyway, carry on....
Well, I was kind of in and out of consiousness (ie. half asleep), but he kept on saying how great it's going to be when have Andy and Roger...and then catching himself by saying if we get Roger. He did that a couple of times. Take it for what it's worth.
I graduated a few years before you. There was one year that the football team did well. One of the guys became a player for Florida State. It's cool that you got to shake Roger's hand and meet him. He's a nice guy. I hope he comes to the Astros.
For what it's worth, Channel 13 announced on the six o'clock news that Hunsicker expects Clemens to make his decision in the next two weeks.
Thanks. I was about to post a question asking what is up with Clemens. I am out of the country right now so no new news on it.
That's the first thing I've heard in a couple of weeks; I almost posted a couple of hours before the news asking the same thing.
Here is an article in todays chronicle, similar to what channel 13 said. Clemens' decision ahead of schedule Pitcher to indicate intentions this month By JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle Instead of waiting until February, as his agent Randy Hendricks previously predicted, Roger Clemens likely will make his decision this month whether to delay his retirement plans to pitch for the Astros, according to Hendricks. Hendricks and his wife, Jill, will return from Hawaii today after spending the week there with Clemens and Andy Pettitte, who were playing in the Mercedes Kapalua pro-am golf tournament. Astros owner Drayton McLane also will arrive in town today from a trip to Portugal. Clemens, who won his 300th game last year, reconsidered his decision to retire after his good friend and former Yankee teammate Pettitte signed with the Astros on Dec. 11. Clemens has received overwhelming encouragement from Pettitte, Astros players and Houston baseball fans urging him to pitch at home. Clemens will make his first public appearance in Houston since Pettitte's signing next Wednesday when Interfaith Charities Inc. honors him at the 43rd "Mr. Sportsman" Gala at The Houstonian Hotel. The Gala is chaired by 2001 Mr. Sportsman honoree Don Sanders; Clemens' other agent, Alan Hendricks; and Interfaith board member Tom Wolff. "Roger was selected for the Interfaith honor some time ago," Randy Hendricks wrote in an e-mail. "He is very deserving, since he has always been involved in charitable endeavors, especially through the Roger Clemens Foundation. He is certainly flattered by all of the enthusiasm from his hometown about the possibility that he might play for the Astros. "I believe he will decide, once and for all, this month, but not before the Interfaith banquet." People close to the situation have told the Chronicle that McLane and the Hendricks brothers have spoken multiple times in the last four weeks about the potential of having Clemens delay his retirement for a year. McLane has vowed to find a spot for Clemens at Minute Maid Park, and the Hendrickses have promised to help make it happen if the six-time Cy Young Award winner desires to pitch at home. "(Clemens) has been mulling over the pros and cons, and I believe the pro is to try to take the Astros deep into the playoffs to help his hometown team," Randy Hendricks said. "The cons are his commitments to his family, his previously announced retirement (99 percent) from the Yankees and the toll playing another year would take on his body, especially his well-known conditioning routine." Clemens, Pettitte, Astros outfielder Richard Hidalgo, Roy Oswalt, Brad Lidge and former Astros closer Billy Wagner will be honored Feb. 6 at the 19th annual Houston Baseball Dinner, presented by the Houston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America and the Houston Athletic Committee.
baseball weekly is reporting that clemens will sign a one-year 4 million dollar contract w/ the astros.
I think ESPN radio mentioned this as well...all I heard was CLemens out the corner of me ear...and suspect now this is what they may have been talking about...
Theres no internet link. it's on pg 33 of the current sports weekly/baseball weekly that just came out
Looks like that is somewhat true: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/topstory/2342789 Astros offer Clemens one-year deal; the question is, will he play? By JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle Only future Hall of Famer Roger Clemens and, perhaps, his family know whether he will put retirement on hold for a year to pitch for his hometown. But Astros owner Drayton McLane already has given the hard-throwing righthander the parameters of a one-year contract offer, the Chronicle has learned. "Drayton has made it clear he wants to sign Roger, and we have discussed financial parameters," Clemens' co-agent Randy Hendricks said. "The issue is not whether Drayton will make an offer. Rather, it is whether Roger will play." If Clemens, 41, puts off retirement to add to his 310 career victories, he will give the Astros a potent rotation. He would join fellow former Yankee Andy Pettitte, Roy Oswalt and Wade Miller to throw against the National League Central champion Chicago Cubs' talented rotation of Mark Prior, Kerry Wood and Carlos Zambrano. Clemens also would be a major drawing card, which is why McLane doesn't mind raising the payroll despite losing $15 million last year. The Astros received a major boost in ticket sales after signing Pettitte away from the Yankees on Dec. 11, prompting vice president of ticket sales John Sorrentino to hire two more employees to cope with the demand. As one president of a National League club predicted at the winter meetings last month, the Astros can expect mostly sellouts if Clemens joins the franchise. Clemens was 17-9 with a 3.91 ERA while throwing 211 2/3 innings in 33 starts last season. Pettitte's signing with the Astros has tempted Clemens to join his former Yankee teammate in Houston. Clemens is represented by Randy and Alan Hendricks, who have had multiple discussions with McLane over the last few weeks about the possibility of Clemens pitching in Houston. Clemens has even acknowledged hosting McLane at his mansion in Memorial. That meeting, according to a person with knowledge of the talks, took place Dec. 23. Clemens, the Hendricks brothers and McLane were traveling back to Houston Thursday. Clemens, Pettitte and Randy and Jill Hendricks were flying back from Hawaii, where Clemens and Pettitte played in the Mercedes Kapalua pro-am golf tournament. McLane was returning from a business trip to Portugal and unavailable for comment.
well we get a decision in a week or two from roger would be quite nice to pickup pettite and roger in one offseason
I'm guessing Roger will make his decision days before the Super Bowl when the greatest Houston athletes get honored. He'll know he will get the loudest ovation from the crowd. It should be very entertaining when Mike Piazza and the Mets come to town.
When asked if he has accepted an offer to play for the Astros by ESPN on Sportcenter, he was quoted as saying "we're still talking". I'm thinking it's only a matter of time.
