Derek Fisher is a scrub. If he is our starting point guard next year then the Rockets need to get scoring from their power forward/backup center. Defense is very important, but you can teach defense. You can motivate good players to play defense. Isn't that why we hired Van Grumpy. Scoring is something you can't teach. Either a player is good at it or he's not. We need someone who's good at it to be our point guard or forward/backup center in my opinion.

    Brent Barry weighing offers
At least one team prepared to trump Sonics' 3-year deal

    By DANNY O'NEIL
    SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

Brent Barry may be days away from deciding where he will play next season, but the interest he has received from other NBA teams has the Sonics playing catch-up for the free-agent guard.

At least one team is believed to have offered Barry a four-year contract. Portland is at the top of that list, although Golden State, Boston and Houston are also thought to be pursuing him.

Phoenix was considered a possibility, but the Suns have reportedly reached agreements with Quentin Richardson and Steve Nash, which would make adding another guard unlikely.

The Sonics didn't offer Barry anything more than a three-year contract in negotiations during the season, which continued into April. Seattle's top offer was believed to be for three years at more than $17.5 million.

Sonics general manager Rick Sund would not comment on negotiations, as is the team's policy. The league has a moratorium on the discussion of salary specifics until July 14, when free agents can begin signing contracts.

Barry has not returned phone messages from the P-I this week. He has gotten so many calls since the free-agency courting period began it's hard to blame him.

Barry may wait until negotiations for fellow free agents Kobe Bryant and Manu Ginobili are concluded to see his full range of options. San Antonio is a possible suitor.

A sign-and-trade agreement involving the Sonics is also a possibility, but it's thought the Sonics will make one more pitch to re-sign Barry, who has played in Seattle for five seasons. Rashard Lewis is the only Sonic with more tenure.

Barry, 32, is one of the top 3-point shooters in the league and as a Sonics co-captain has been a stabilizer in the locker room. He missed 23 games last season, 20 because of a broken bone in his hand. It was the only time in Seattle he missed more than 15 games. The Sonics were 30-29 in the games Barry played and 7-16 in the games he missed.

It seems that Brent Barry is not coming to the Rockets!!

Unrestricted free agent guard Brent Barry will sign a four-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs for between $22 and $24 million, a source told ESPN's David Aldridge.

The 32-year-old Barry chose the Spurs over a four-year offer for the full mid-level exception from the Portland Trail Blazers, in part because he thought the Spurs were closer to contending for a championship. Barry also turned down a three-year offer worth $18 million from his former team, the Seattle Sonics, wanting a four-year offer.

Barry's signing completes a strong 48-hour period for the Spurs; they agreed to terms on Thursday with guard Manu Ginobili. The Spurs will now have a three-guard rotation of Tony Parker, Ginobili and Barry, who can play both guard positions.

The Spurs are now expected to complete their offseason spending by re-signing forward Bruce Bowen, who opted out of the last year of his contract. Bowen is expected to receive a three-year deal from San Antonio worth $9 million.

Now that the Sonics have lost Barry, discussions they were having with the Rockets about trading guard Antonio Daniels for draft picks probably will end as well.
