I suppose MLE isn't too bad for a 33-year old who relies on his shooting and IQ. I mean, Stockton was well worth getting more than MLE at age 38. Barry is no Stockton, but the point is you cannot use age as the single argument to say a contract is bad.

Look at Marbury, he is going to make 3 times as Barry does. I guess old but good players are getting paid well nowadays.

It would be nice to have a younger pg with what we need to go along with Yao and Tmac. There just isn't one! Arroyo is a long shot and we can not wait that long! We need a PG for next season.

I dont think Barry will be a defensive liability. He is 6'6" which means he will be able to guard shooting guards also. If tmac is the defensive stopper everyone says he is then we could put Tmac on those speedy point guards.

Barry isnt a pure pointguard, but he knows how to play unselfishly and how to protect the ball, thats all we really need. We dont need a quick penetrating pointguard that others need since we have Yao and Tmac, all Barry has to do is setup either Yao or Tmac.

That brings to point that if needed, you could play a backup PG with Barry over to 2 and T-Mac to 3 spot when needed. As long as they have a solid backup PG that won't turn over the ball.

So Chinese websites are reporting that Fanball reported (follow the rumors!) Barry's a done deal.

4 years, 24 million as reported. Has this already been reported?

To follow what heech posted, here is what Fanball says:

The Houston Rockets have made a four-year, $24 million offer to free agent guard Brent Barry, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Barry, 32, averaged 10.8 points, 5.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.4 steals for the SuperSonics in 2003-04. He also finished second in the NBA by hitting 45.2 percent of his three-pointers.

    OUR VIEW

The Rockets are looking for a veteran point guard to run their squad, and while Barry is more of a combo guard, he looks like a good fit on paper. With Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming commanding so much attention, Barry could be a potent three-point force on kick-out passes. He's also a very good passer and picks up a lot of steals.

Right, I tracked down the fanball report myself after posting. I had seen the Denver report this morning, and then just now saw on Sohu (the Chinese site) the deal was done. It said a contract had already been agreed upon (or even signed).

But, as is obvious now, they just mistranslated the fanball news.

The thing about getting Barry is that he is a tall pg who can deliver the ball over SMALLER point guards into Yao Mings hands. And if his defenders cheats off of him too much can receive the ball and earn his money shooting 3 pointers at 45% effectiveness.

Barry is not a prototypical point guard, but he is a nice talent. On this team, he can definatley be a key difference.

    Yao
    Howard
    Jackson
    McGrady
    Barry

The starting 5 players have a reputation of being offensive minded. It would be something else seeing Jackson and Barry constantly burn teams for double teaming off of them. And if they double teamed off of Howard, he could easily make a nice jumper.

Can someone explain to me why the Houston chronicle doesn't have a story on this?

Feigen is usually pretty tight with rumors. He doesn't tend to say much about them if there isn't anything to them. Thats not to say there isnt anything to this rumor, but Feigen usually doesn't throw hearsay from a 3rd party into an article.

Also, rumor has it that the Rockets are tight lipped about rumors and don't give much up (just like the McGrady deal).

It's Obvious what the Rockets are Trying to do. they are getting Skilled Jumpshooters to Punish Teams For Collapsing on Yao in the lowpost. did with Ellie, Horry, Bullard to a lesser extent with Barkely for Olajuwon so now there doing it for Yao. good move.

If were offering that much money and that many years I wonder why Barry hasn't jumped on it yet? Man, i'm full of questions today.

We can agree we just can't sign. I really want Barry to be the Rockets point guard. I think he's the best player available at the position. The fact that he hasn't agreed yet worries me a bit.

The Rockets could be trying to put together a sign & trade like the first rumor suggested.
