It is so hard to know who to draft. It also depends on whether JVG stays or not. Due to JVG's personality, he is limited in the type of players that he can stand to work with or who can stand to work with him. Talent is subordinate to this issue. JVG cannot work with the slightest head case, and players with strong personalities might not be able to work with JVG even if they are not "head cases".

Dut to JVG's personality, he is limited in the type of players that he can stand to work with or who can stand to work with him. Talent is subordinate to this issue. Given these limiatations I definitely would choose a point guard first, assuming they are good enough. I believe this is the Rocket's greatest weakness wrt to winning on nearly winning a championship.
I am all for bringing Louis Scola over, making the trade with San Antonio. He is more of a sure thing than anyone in the draft right now. He is tearing up Euroleague and would be exactly what we are looking for at the 4spot, Hayes would turn into a dynamo off the bench. I would at least also like to get their 2nd rounder this year. Then i would use our MLE to sign a point guard, maybe Aitkins.
It all depends on who is the Head Coach of the Rockets for the 2007-2008 NBA season! If JVG we should not waste talent by selecting a rookie of any sort, especially a ssssssspecialist Role Player! If JVG has been replace or reduced in rank to Head Coach in charge of Defence then we should be looking for a tall, strong athletic player who can score & defend, he should have an established skill in as much that he knows how to pass into a big bigman, possibly a Small Forward so that McGrady can go back to being a Shooting Guard. Other needs are 6'6" Playmaker Point Guard and 7ft 275lbs Athletic Power Forward who can defend, rebound and has great skill at putbacks.
Exactly. Unless there are significant injuries like we had last year, even if we manage to draft a diamond in the rough, he won't play.
I can't believe supposedly intelligent people still post this BS after being shown example after example of it not being true. There is no head case more crazy than Latrell Sprewell, and there is no personality stronger than Bob Sura. But don't let the facts get in the way of a good rant.
Center position is covered, especially if we resign Jake on the cheap. Undersized combo guards quota is taken care of. SF position is fine. Needs: PF with legit size, athletic backup swingman, backup PG (note - 6-1 SGs need not apply). Perspective Candidates: Unlikely to be there: Acie Law, Brandon Rush, Just Say No: Josh McRoberts, Aaron Gray Intriguing Possibilities: Morris Almond, Tiago Splitter, Marcus Williams, Arron Afflalo, Alando Tucker My vote - don't chase after a starter-level big that doesn't exist where we're drafting. There doesn't seem to be a lot of PGs coming out. Bring in the swingmen and see who impresses. Evan
I hope Morris Almond will impress. He seems a good shot at being available when we pick. Some local talent on the team would be cool, since Rashard and Emeka are unlikely to ever wear the Rockets uniform (except as Robert Horry/Dikembe Mutombo backups ten years from now).
Last I checked if you're a "head case" then, you're a "head case" no slighting about it but, yeah I get your point. Pretty simple if you're a rook, you ride the pine unless you are just kid dynamite.
I wonder what it would take to get Durant to the Rockets. JVG doesn't like rookies and we could give up our #1. Maybe throw in Howard and Rafer....
This BBS really slurps Almond. Its insane. His stats are amazing, but can someone show me stats of how he did against top 50 teams? Im not trying to bash anybody. Just curious.
I think the Rockets will need to trade up and somehow get Acie Law, he might turn out to be the answer to the Point Guard position but I say only might.
Almond: I have no idea if he is the right guy or not - I have to trust our scouting and workout evaluators for that. But he seems like a nice idea for our lineup - right position, right skills, and Houston ties. Whether that idea meshes with reality is TBD. Acie Law - I like him, but have my concerns. Is he a Ray Felton or can he be an actual PG? Our system would demand he be able to catch and shoot with range, and I'm just not sure that he's comfortable with that. Seems to need his jumpers to be off-the-dribble and in rhythm. Evan
I think we need to look at the reality, we need someone who is a rookie but can play, lets trade our first rounder to San Antoinio for the rights to Louis Scola, he is in his mid 20's so he is mature, can step right in and compete with Hayes for minutes, at 6'10 he isn't undersized for the 4, and has alot of the intangibles we look for, a JVG type player who would definately get minutes, and more of a sure thing than anyone else that we would draft.
draftexpress.com has thaddeus young falling to us, which i wouldnt be too upset with, even though he's probably 2 years away from being close to a contributor. from a talent standpoint, good pick. from a team standpoint, its rudy gay version 2 and we'd prolly trade him. morris almond would be a nice pick. you forget that he declared last year to get his name out and really impressed scouts with his scoring ability. he needs to work on his defense and ball handling, but if we're looking for a 3rd option or 6th man, he'd be a good pick. you cant really determine his ability from his stats from games against top 50 teams when he's the only scoring threat and defenses are focused soley on him. derrick byars is also a good pick who should be able to contribute sooner rather than later whether it be defensively or offensively. jason smith needs to gain strength, but his skillset and height are nice. smaller version of yao when he first came over. davon hardin can play PF and C and has nice athleticism. still raw, probably will go back to school anyway.
