Head only choked in the summer league. that doesn't mean he's a bad player. give the guy a break. He's better than that. I'll take Head anytime.
Wait wait wait wat...a minute....your telling me that we have *8* Guards on the team that are suppose to all be combo guards, but now were saying that we need to sign another *iffy* guard to play a position that he hasn't played in 2 full seasons....YES, WE DO HAVE A PROBLEM HOUSTON.
We have 8 guards but most of them are old, lame, or halt. Head is too young, MJ is a better b/u than starter and not all are combo guards to begin with. I don't think you want to see DW playing point and I sure don't think you want Mooch or Charlie playing the SG. I would say only Barry and DA are combo guards besides Sura. Maybe they take up the slack for Sura, I don't know. That's why I'm a little worried. I don't want to see us get off to a sputtering start again. If CWard has any gas left and is back healthy he is a good pass first quarterback (in a BBall sense), maybe good enough to pair with MJ to begin the season. He was playing pretty well last year until he went down. He is a JVG guy ya know.
Make Wesley the starting PG and Anderson the 2. Problem solved. What do we want from our PG besides good shooting and defense. Enter Wesley.
T-Mac is our primary ball handler. I hope to be seeing alot more pick and rolls using he and Yao. Wesley and DA as the kick-out 3-point shooters. I'll take that for the time being.
Yes.... bring in Jay Will. It's a good gamble, with a real-politik plus. The story is so compelling it means lots and lots of rockets pub, which means...more rockets wins. Shoot me if you think that's not how the world really works. It doesn't really matter if he makes it or not. It only matters that we get more than our fair share of media love. Really... a little extra drama is a good thing. Let him fight with Wesley or something. Otherwise, the Wesley pg, DA sg idea is capital strategy, with Tmac as point forward. Sura is a nobody. Forget him. He's nice on the bench, but...no political capital. James is a bench player. He's great for that. Never start him.
Anyone remember that thread titled "Are we ready for injuries?" Everybody said that yes, of course we are. People praised our amazing depth at the guard position and our backup in Baxter for the bigs. We're stock full of players! Now that one player's actually gone down, we're scrambling for more players. Our depth doesn't look so good now does it? I put up a thread hypothesizing which of our guards best complimented each other. Mike James and David Wesley are good defenders, but way too short to start together. If Derek Anderson has anything left in the tank, I hope he can start at PG for us. That way, we can still have the James/Barry combo coming off the bench. Which is a good thing. The silver lining in all of this: we'll find out sooner rather than later exactly what Head can give us. Hopefully, he's good enough to compete for the starting job even after Sura comes back. BTW, does anyone have a link to where I can find the entire article?
Why I bother responding to crap like this... I will never know. "Sura is a nobody"? Do you know anything about basketball? He is among the best rebounding guards in the league. He brings a toughness and hustle (along with Barry) that we are sorely lacking. He has size. Is consistant with his jumper (although not great) and our best guard at creating open looks for others when he drives to the basket. A nobody? Wow.
not to pick on you and i understand that we have issues rebounding but its like saying X is one of the best ball handling centers in the league.
This should really be a suprised to anyone, both CD and JVG said Sura won't be ready for training camp, so I doubt he'll be ready come the season opener. As much as some of ya'll dislike Mike James, he'll get the start and I think he'll suprise a lot of us. He's got the speed and the athleticism to get up and down the court. As far as adding another PG, I think we'll add Jay Williams. Miami got GP and JW said he isn't going to Toronto, so that leaves us. Toronto offered him the minimum last week, I think CD told JW to hold on for a little longer while Houston dealt with Rita. Otherwise, I don't see why he wouldn't have taken the offer.
The way JVG was using Sura/James last year, Sura playing the 1st qtr and 3rd qtr and James playing the 2nd and 4th quarter, they were interchangable. So why can't Mike James start and play the bulk of the minutes? We will miss Sura's rebounding less this year because of SS and a more improved Yao. I do like BS on this team, he is pit bull but I think we can wait until December until he comes back and still win. I just don't know about signing Jay Will, Riley said no, Chicago didn't pick up his option, Babcock doesn't even offer him a guaranteed $660k, you know the old saying you get what you pay for and Jay Will seems to be awfully cheap.
Maybe we'll sign Jay Will, non-guaranteed, and see what he has in training camp. Wouldn't be a bad idea.
If he'll take it, turns down the Rapts non-guaranteed minimum offer and then takes ours? I guess I would sign him but he would have to show an awful lot by Oct. 31 to make this roster and force a cut of either CW, Moochie or VB. Our investment in him at that point would be not only his $620K minimum contract plus the salary owed the player we cut, an improbable scenario IMO.
