Just because Billups took a certain time doesn't mean Randolph can't develop a lot quicker. Or he may never pan out. My point is that I don't think you can write off a player just because he has been traded multiple times early in his career. Maybe he can flourish in the right system with the right coaches. If Morey is truly weighing this, he has to decide if Randolph will be better than a likely late 1st rounder in 2012.
He's better than Hill at this point. And I like Hill but he just doesn't look like he gonna be a impact player. He makes too make mental mistakes, his iq doesn't seem all that good, he's too inconsistent, and not very skilled compared to a guy like AR. He could easily replace him imo. Even Patterson I think is already a better player than Hill.
are you all seriously getting excited about trading for Anthony Randolph? the guy is worse than stromile swift.
Ish Smith would probably get cut. I was thinking the Rockets would use their TE to acquire Randolph but I don't think that would happen after reading someone's trade proposal. That would further put the Rocket above the LT if they did that.
Anthony Randolph will never have the strength to play center and we are well stocked with PFs. However, if he can play SF on a consistent basis, then I like him paired with Bud because they give Adelman nice matchup options. Both Randolph and Budinger need to work on defense, but they are just 21. As Gater always says, "If you have the athleticism, you can always learn defense, but it's much harder to acquire offensive skills." I think acquiring Randolph for the 2012 Knicks pick and a small contract (Jermaine Taylor since we have Martin and Lee) to maintain the 15-member roster would be prudent under the bird in the hand is worth two in the bush philosophy.
As with any young player, you have to attempt to forecast what he can become. I think he has everything josh smith has including the early inconsistent shooting and maturity issue. The difference is smith was given consistent minutes from day 1. Anyone rember josh shooting 43% from the field? That was just 2 yrs ago, but look at him now. So the question becomes, what is it worth to maybe get the next josh smith or yr 4 ak 47?
Small fact a lot of people seem to be missing.. the 2012 NY pick we would give up for him would be worthless. If Morey is willing to send back NY's first for Randolph, to me that signifies that the Rockets are out of the Carmelo hunt. Knowing that the Knicks are the most likely destination for Carmelo, Morey would be turning a 1st round pick in the 20s into Anthony Randolph -- I would be more than OK with that. That said.. could this signify a rebuilding/fire sale of the Rockets? What's the point of having Jordan Hill, Patrick Patterson and Anthony Randolph all on the team when you just gave a fat contract to Luis Scola?
Thumbs, how has garnett played pf all these yrs at 225lbs. Later in his development he can get stronger, but in today game you can defend with your length and quickness. Not saying he's garnett, but garnetts first few yrs, he played with gugliatta. Garnett basically guarded the small forward. After googs injuries and the trade, garnett manned the 4 spot. I see randolph more like larry nance in terms of the fexibility. Nance played the 4,but when they brought in williams he played the 3. When daughtery needed a rest, he went to 4 and hot rod played the 5.
I agree 100%. When you look at what we've got going at the 3 this year, even if he is not a perfect fit at the 3, he is still a very substantial upgrade. We should bring him in and immediately give him 20+ minutes at that position. His game does remind me of AK-47 (whom I still lust after) with the added dimension of having the ability to handle the ball end to end and find guys. He is a bigger, longer AK-47 with much better court vision and the ability to distribute. So, you can call him a PF or whatever, but his skill set transcends position. And as far as having a logjam of big guys, I ain't buying it. I personally believe Hill is going to be traded. Patterson? I believe he is a keeper and can be a stretch 4. And I am salivating at the prospects of having Randolph, and Patterson at the forward slots surrounding a legit center (Please get healthy, Yao). A combo of Randolph and Patterson supercharges this team, both defensively and offensively as those guys can consistently beat their man down the court.
A player that's not an expiring would probably go too. Rockets would be helping them out by giving them what they need to get them a *superstar* player. Knicks are going to be helping us out too... Most likely taking on a contract rockets no longer desire. Otherwise Rocket would have 16 players.... Do you think Rockets would want to just cut a player like Ish, who's oh so talented, and let him for nothing? Or even Jermaine...for example: Rockets didn't try and negotiate a buy-out and/or just wave him when going after Dampier... He's also too talented to just cut and get nothing in return.
I think the trade would go like this... Maybe Ish and/or Jermaine and 2012 1st round pick for Randolph an a 2nd rounder (whatever year) Rockets still keep their big expirings for another trade. Or Rockets make them take on a bigger contract to have flexibility to either be able to use their trade exception, and/or extend Randolph Idk.
I say let's do it. It's a gamble but this team needs the potential this guy has. And no this isn't Chase Budinger potential or Jordan Hill potential. Randolph has legit potential. What do we have to lose besides a pick that will probably be crappy anyway? No superstars are coming here so let's see what plugging a freaky 6'11" kid into the lineup does.
Exactly. Plus we know that D'Antoni sucks at developing young talent (Jordan Hill) so maybe he's better than what he has shown in NY.
But I think the consensus around the league, and certainly imo, is that Randolph is probably only worth a pick in the 20s. It's certainly not a steal. And that's probably in a normal draft. Do you believe a pick in the 20s in 2012 will be a better than normal one? I do, given the looming lockout. So again, doable deal? Yes. Homerun? No. Try and get something better? Yes. Short of that, try and get something "more" from Knicks? Of course. I'd be more comfortable with the suggested turn the right to the pick into a right to swap picks - probably meaningless (as you noted, the Knicks could be very good next year, then), but a good safety net incase they have a big injury year, or something doesn't work. But I'd also try and get more, like the Knicks 2012 2nd rounder due to them from Golden State.
He dropped 12/6.5 his second year in Golden State and added a steal and a block and a half on top of that in 22 minutes a game. This guy is a proven talent in this league. I agree about D'Antoni. The guy is an ass just like Nellie is. I'm not saying AR doesn't have issues because I've pointed them out on this forum in the past but gambles have to be made if this team has a chance of progressing.
When was the last time a raw, long, athletic wing with high potential actually panned out in the NBA? don't say Josh Smith or Tmac because they already had skills. Gerald Green and Stromile Swift keep entering my head.
leebigez, you literally picked the WORST two examples for thinking that Randolph can play the 3 effectively. Both Smith and Kirilenko have struggled mightily during their careers playing the 3, while they have historically been much more effective playing at the PF spot. I'm not saying that Randolph can't play the 3, but I do think the comparisons to Smith and Kirilenko are apt. More likely, he's a career PF if he's going to be most effective.
