Ok, this is what Walsh needs to make the Melo trade happen At this rate, Knicks are probably gonna keep their 2011 first round pick, and the only valuable from us is the 2012 pick. So I see a little difficulty here for us to be in this thing, because we cannot help. Right?
Nope, based on our start our 2011 pick is more valuable than our 2012. We still get a 2011 to trade to them.
The Daily News is reporting that the Houston Rockets, among “several” other teams are currently contacting the Knicks about acquiring Randolph. The Rockets could send New York a first round draft pick, which could in turn be the key for New York bringing superstar Carmelo Anthony to New York. Basically, Carmelo Anthony will not get to NYC via trade prior to next summer unless the Houston Rockets or some other team facilitates this trade by taking back Randolph, whom I'd be more than happy to acquire for their own first round draft pick. We will not find a better player than AR in next year's draft at the level we'd be selecting anyways.
The report says we are trying to send back the NY picks acquired from the Tmac trade for AR. Are you saying we should send our 2011 pick/or give them the option to swap in 2011? If that's the case, I am a little reserved. Is AR worth a lottery pick, probably top 10 per our record so far? I am not sure when NYK, GSW, DEN all don't want to have anything w/ him. Even if it's the 2012 NYK pick, I guess I am still not convinced.
His potential is off the charts, but a first round pick is a bit much. This seems like an anti-Morey move. Trading a valuable asset for a high-risk prospect is not his usual agenda.
The Knicks have to keep their 2011 pick because they have already agreed to trade their 2012 pick to us. You are not allowed to trade two future 1st round picks in consecutive years. They can get around this if they can acquire another team's 2011 first round pick or by reacquiring the 2012 back from the Rockets.
We dont have pickS, we only took one from them and had the option to switch this summer. The report says we're trading them back the pick acquired, which means the 2012 pick. If you assume they only want that pick, then i think they want the less valuable one.
So for us, it's exercise 2011 option if they suck or take the 2012 protected pick from them, but not both. I guess my initial reaction is valid: If they need one more 2011 first round pick to make the Melo trade, why do they need us since all we have right now is the 2012 pick from them, unless we are sending them our 2011 first round pick. I guess the report is a little off on that.
If there is even a tiny chance that our 2011 pick is in the top 3, it should not be traded, to the Knicks or to anyone else.
No, no....we get their 2012 AND the right to switch in 2011. We'd be trading them back their 2012 or our 2011.
You're getting a top 10 talent in Randolph. That would be a sure "pick". I think right now we're going to end up in the same range as last season. Another PP isn't likely to fall and even he hasn't proven himself quite yet. Chances of moving up to 2 or 3 would be very slim.
We have both the option to use the swap in 2011 (doesn't look good though) AND the protected 2012 pick. They need us because if they can reacquire their 2012 pick from us, they will be free to trade their own 2011 first round pick to Denver. They were also looking to acquire another team's 2011 first rounder so they could send that to Denver. They wouldn't have to worry about about the 2012 pick that they traded to us if they can get another team's first rounder in 2011. Interesting that no other team has shown interest in acquiring Randolph for their 1st rounder.
I'll be surprised if we gave them our 2011 pick when there is a good chance that it will be a lottery pick. It would be better to give them their 2012 pick back when it is likely to be in the 20 or later range.
Knicks just need a 2012 pick, any one will do as long as it is unconditional. The problem with not having one is that you can't trade the 2011 or the 2013 picks (and the 2012 pick, of course) under the Ted Stepien Rule. The problem with a 2012 pick one from teams other than the Rockets is that they are most likely going to ask for the pick to be protected (top 3, top 13, top 5, whatever), and that still will make things difficult under the Stepien Rule since you don't have a "whole pick" (i.e. a 2012 pick that will belong to the Knicks no matter what). The Rockets have the Knicks conditonal (i.e. top 5 protected 2012 pick), they are likely willing to trade this back without additional protections (since it won't be a top 5 pick anyway) and the Knicks will have a "whole pick."
Can Randolph play the Lamar Odom role on our team as a lengthy SF? We would really be building onto something with the length we would be adding with Randolph. Lee 6 3 Martin 6 7 Randolph 6 11 Hill 6 10 Miller 7 That would be a hard line up to match up with in terms of height.
A swap in 2011 would still be legal because they would still have a 1st round pick. They can't send that pick out while we still own their 2012 pick or without acquiring another 2011 first rounder from another team.
