This may have been mentioned before, but I didn't read all 700 of the other posts. Any chance we passed on Splitter in the draft for the Spurs to get, and in return they agreed to put together the deal for Scola?
Apparently Rockets got lucky that a three-way trade between the Cavs-Kings-Spurs fell through. They were also under pressure as they only had until the 15th to use Scola as a valuable trading piece.
I don't think they would do that because San Antonio was not picking directly behind Houston which meant that there were no guarantees that he would be available.
LOL LOL Spanoulis said you could put him on the Spurs and he wouldnt come back to the NBA, well we shall now see. SCola, who knows, none of us realyl know much about him unless we watch euro games, but i've seen jackie Butler in NY, might not be the most talented, but this guy busts his balls all day and is a hard workers. Should fit in nicely as a role player.
Yeah, if the spurs didn't trade splitter before the 15th, he would have been locked up in europe for 5 years. Aas for Butler, his contract expires next year and he has no room in the rotation this year for the spurs, so he will just sign somewhere else after the contract.. Why not get money in return for two worthless assets? However, the Spurs traded within the division which is a no-no.. I can't wait till it comes back to bite them in playoff time kind of like what the Warriors did to Dallas after Dallas let the Warriors in the playoffs.
Just doesn't make sense - if this guy is so good, why didn't the Spurs find a way to bring him in. People say LT but he wouldn't have put them that much over.... I haven't passed judgement on Morey - but I don't expect him to be great either....his track record isn't really there, and he's on the young side.... I'll wait until Novemeber before I comment. So far, I don't see how anything is different from the hype of the two previous seasons, when we brought in Stro'....and when we brought in Battier and Wells last year.
so the rockets have less than 24 hours to negotiate, as scola has to tell tau if he is coming back or not.....Jack Bauer, anyone?
He got paid for his potential. He basically put up the numbers in the last month he had with the Knicks (April, 2006).
To me, trading away to a division rival to help our gaping hole means one of 2 things: 1. They are not scared of our team at all. (I think this is the case) 2. They know something about Scola that we don't know.
No, they tried very hard to send Scola to East Conference (Cav or Bulls) and they almost made it. They didn't want to trade with Rockets at all but it ended up only us can gave them what they wanted.
The Rockets have made plenty of in-division trade in recent years alone. Jackson/Boki for Wesley Moochie for Lampe Swift/Gay for Battier Flores for Spanoulis Spanoulis+2nd Round Pick for Butler+Scola
or 3.They took the deal that offered them the best financial benefits http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=stein_marc&id=2935125 When you combine payroll savings, Vassilis Spanoulis' virtually certain return to Europe and Houston's cash contributions, San Antonio saved an estimated $7 million by trading the draft rights to Argentine power forward Luis Scola and little-used Jackie Butler to Houston on Thursday. The Spurs were hoping to send Scola out of their conference -- as part of a three-way trade with the Kings and Cavs that would have landed Scola and Bibby in Cleveland before collapsing Thursday -- but decided that the financial benefits were too significant to keep Scola away from the neighboring Rockets.
They were "forced" to trade him after reserving his rights since 2002. His agents have been urging the Spurs to move him somewhere else where he would get a chance to play and they had until July the 15th to move him or else he would've signed a long contract with his European team. As mentioned above, the Spurs tried to move him somewhere else out in the Eastern Conference but that never came to fruitation so he ended up here.
I'm hearing from someone that ESPN argentina says scola signed a 3 year deal with the Rox, any truth to it?
They tried...buyouts prevented it. They have Matt Bonner and Oberto signed now....I don't think they want 4 PF's with large contracts.
Don't forget VSpan, who most around him totally overestimated his impact based on a couple of international games. The trade is great because VSpan and a 2nd rounder are basically worthless. Don't take my words below out of context, I like the move. That said I am very skeptical Butler and Scola will be impact players. 1) The Spurs have point blank said (and backed up in his PT) Butler just couldn't play for them. 2) And as far as Scola, they clearly thought higher of Elson, Oberto and Bonner to spend money on them (and Butler last year), who would all look really sucky by NBA bigs standards if not getting most of their PT next to one Tim Duncan. 3) Now maybe Butler is just young, and maybe the Scola/agent peeing contest with Spurs manangement could never be overcomed. But even then if I thought these guys had the slightest amount on NBA game in them the last thing I would do is trade them to one of the handfull of teams who with a solid PF might take your butt out next year. A division and state rival you would face 4 time a year no less. Again, excellent trade, but I am skeptical of its impact and certainly don't think we should assume the San Antonio Spurs just solved our PF problem for us.
