Same could be said about FVV. Basketball success, or any other kinds of success, isn't only about statistics.

As one of the most watched Ted Talks of all time, Angela Duckworth, Grit The Power of Perserverance, IQ (and presumably physical capabilities) are not a good predictor of success. FVV is evidence that grit is a better predictor.

Re: your take that Tyty was on a bad team so he should have had a chance to prove himself? You weren't in the locker room so you never know. Just being on a bad team doesn't mean that you had a real opportunity to showcase your skills. In sports, most need consistent minutes to perform. He wasn't ever in that role.

    Anyway, it's an academic conversation.

I don't think Tyty has a spot on this team, he seems like a nice guy, and wish him the best wherever he lands.

    Lob Threat!

I still think he will have a good career, either in the NBA or in Europe.

I've never seen anyone complete an alley oop before. This is incredible. The first ever alley oop. I hope he does it again.

A guy who's game is all based on defense is not going to be recognized by most people because the only defense you see in a highlights clip is shot blocking and the occasional steal.

The other thing I've learned recently is that a ton of people watch basketball games by focusing on the team that's scoring and not paying attention to how the other team defends.

Common thing in the NBA. Until someone in the media recognizes a defensive player (or they play in LA) 90% of fans will always be like "but what does he do? Doesn't pass the eye test". Sad because defense is half the game (just like offense) yet all-offense players end up in highlights all the time creating the illusion they're doing something more.

What's worse, people who only watch highlights get offended when you mention it lol.

None of the defenders on our team looked good the past two seasons and some regressed. Excellent defense can't be played in isolation except the shot blocking part. It was a brutal team to be on for a player who intended to carve out a career based on defense. Garuba may find a training camp spot or go back to Europe for a year, but I still have 0 doubt he'll ultimately have an excellent NBA career.

Earlier in the thread I said that it was likely OKC would release one or both of them.

Now that that has occurred, I seriously doubt either of them is on an NBA roster next season.

True. What people don’t realize is there are only so many spots in the NBA. It gets real tight, real fast if you’re a fringe player.

I agree with you but look at PGs in the NBA now you don't really find big PGs that's why kids like Giddey and Cade are highly valued.

This is all just crap as usual.

This is a young developmental center playing good defense. It's also a young developmental center (literally fresh off the plane from the G-League, if I recall correctly) pretty much doing whatever he wants to opposing centers.

Please note who the opposite number is in a majority of these clips (though, they tail off in the end, insofar as he was benched for futility) - it is the undersized guy who is getting overpowered, bungling the pick & roll defense, unable to contest any shots - and even late getting back in trasnstion..

That is the "defensive specialist" - a guy who can't defend a one-dimensional traditional center with a range of 2 feet.

The other thing I've learned recently is that a ton of people pretend like they watch basketball games by pretending like they appreciate the finer things like defense while the knaves like us just focus on gaudy offense.

Those people are mostly bullshit artistes, @Mathloom

I have been watching that play over and over and over again. This Alley oop thing is revolutionary. Garuba is changing the game and to think we had him buried on our bench for 2 years! We should at least bring him back to teach Green, Porter, Thompson, Whitmore, etc how this is done. Maybe as an assistant coach if nothing else. I'm so irritated right now. #FireStone

The problem with Ty and Garuba is that they got fat too quick. Rockets incompetent staff made them feel comfortable

I guess one could argue that the 82 days that Mark Wiliams (Dec.16,2001) has been on planet earth longer than Usman Garuba (March 9 2002) gives him some sort of inherent advantage based on age - I'd argue it's the fact that he's bigger, faster, stronger and better at basketball.

I’m not arguing that premise. I am just pointing out that you said he is young. (As I said he is) literally just pointing out how young the rockets core is.

I am hoping Van V and Brooks can help Green Sengun Jabari & Eason (he is older than Williams so he real real old) do well this season. Then hopefully every year for the next 4-5 this team gets better and better each successive season.

Yes... and he us a 6'8 ground-bound center.

Watching the world cup, there are other (better) short centres who are not AS short as Usman, and have more bounce, and greater shooting touch (who aren't on NBA rosters)

I'll be surprised if Garuba is on an NBA roster this year. His game needs a "reason" for him to be o a roster.

I'm pretty confident you are right on TyTy. Considering Garuba past through waivers, not looking good for him. I thought Garuba would stick. Thought he just needed to speed up his 3 ball a little so he wouldn't be too bad a liability on offense.
