Worse and worse....all this to pay Thabeet $5M next year to stink up the bench?

This could be the lowest point for me as a Rockets fan in 18 years.....

The Rockets want a potentially high picks. Where you get those without giving up too much is often in a trade involving a future pick with lessening level of protection. I recall that Detroit got the Darko pick (#2) from Memphis in a earlier trade where the lotto protection kept on falling, and, that year, was only #1 protected. Utah ended up with NYK's lotto pick in a similar way-- I think the pick was originally a part of a trade years ago.

Anyway, the idea of this pick is probably that the Rockets are taking a chance that the Grizzlies, a rather dyfunctional organization, has a decent chance of entering another "dark age" in a few years. So, if they end up falling out of the playoffs a couple times, there's a chance we get a high pick.

Of course, the probabilities are not large, but that's how it works-- you take a low probability bet that doesn't cost you much (Shane's deal is expiring anyway) with potentially high reward.

Per Feigen, the pick is protected throughout, meaning it's lottery protected through the 7 seasons that we're able to hold it under trade rules. So if the Grizzlies make the playoffs through 2013-2020, we lose it for nothing. :(

Do you have a link for that. I find it hard to believe, with all due respect.

Pretty much. Sure, it's a gamble but when you lack top 3-5 draft picks like we do you have to take risks like this if you want to perhaps eventually hit a homerun.

Keep in mind: for teams in our position there is no conventional way to do this. You either trade (and overpay), tank (and pray) or take matters into your own hands like DM the GM did here.

Given that you pay a premium for size in this league and how effective centers that don't get paid $10M+ per year are a rarity, I completely agree with Morey's line of thinking here.

I'm sorry I might not understand lottery protection, but doesn't that mean if they MAKE the playoffs they DON'T get a lottery pick and thus we would be able to receive their pick. Basically the 17th pick or later? Am I mistaken?

I'm surprised the Rockets were able to get this much value for Shane, especially from the Griz. They have better, cheaper players who perform the same roles....X. Henry and T. Allen. This probably means that if Memphis makes the playoffs, they'll be swept again just like they were every year that Battier was there. Sucks for guys like Z-Bo, Gay, and Conley if that happens., but maybe Battier won't play that much thereby giving them a chance. All in all, I'm glad this overhyped, overrated, and overpaid scrub is no longer on the team.

Sad that Shane is leaving, but I'm amazed at what the Rockets got for him. It's a win-win, imo.

You can call Battier "overhyped, overrated, and overpaid" and possibly make an argument, one I would have disagreed with, but at least an argument, but calling Shane a scrub, with all due respect, clearly shows you to be exactly that. A scrub.

Honestly. Even if I were as obsessed with Shane as somebody here, I'd still have enough stones to respect the guy and wish him well with his new club.

Apparently that's too much to ask for.

Had to get one more parting shot in there, didn't ya?

Yes, as a Rockets fan you are now rooting for the Suns and Grizzles to be the No. 7 and No. 8 seeds, in whichever order you think will give the Spurs & Mavs the most fits. We would then get both of their picks in the late teens.

I don't think Shane's quite ready for the rocker. Not yet. ;)
