If it's the clippers, a big market team too, I agree. But the Knicks are not Clippers, a perennial loser.

W/ this move Walsh is making, the players under the contract next year, you have to think there is a master plan behind this. Don't assume Walsh is dumb b/c he is the Knicks GM. He talks to agents, and probably has a good grasp about what's going to happen in the summer.

Well, it's all speculative. I am just not every enthusiastic about the picks, especially the swap.

So? He's going to sit on the bench and do nothing, not every player in the NBA has an impact. There's also no way the Kings would've done this deal without Landry included. Morey is good but he can't fool the Kings into believing that Cook is even close to as valuable as Landry

Don't forget Landry's multiple knee injuries going back to college. That's another reason that Scola is probably "safer" despite being older.

Well, we don't want them to be too bad, either. If they somehow land the top pick in 2011 and a top 5 pick in 2012, that would be worse for us than if they won the championship both years.

i guess the question to ask is

    do you want landry

or do you want kevin martin?

essentially the rockets traded landry for martin which is a homerun

i am waiting to see the NY press conference and Tmac saying "great things will happen here in the city of New York I can feel it"

or the supposed stephen a smith interview

Help me out then. What am I missing?

    I thought 2012 was Top 5 protected.

Brooksball, it doesn't work that way, my friend. This isn't Vegas.

If the Knicks get the #1 pick in 2011 (FYI, even if they went 0-82 that season, they STILL only have a 25% chance at the #1 pick), then the pick swap obligation would likely be deferred until 2013, probably with NO protection.

Same goes for the 2012 pick. If the Knicks get a top-5 pick that year, the obligation will likely be deferred until 2014, probably with NO protection.

There is literally NOTHING not to like about this trade.

Actually... C Bud is a great pick? What is wrong with you. And Taylor hasn't been given any playtime yet. He's not bad man. The other two were well worth the risk.

When picks aren't traded because of protections, it is usually pushed to the next year. Don't know the details but my guess is if we don't get 2012 pick, we will get their 2013 pick that will also be top5 protected.

I agree, as bad as Knicks were last season, didn't they just end up with #8th overall?

Awesome. I was thinking it was a full on gamble. This puts my mind at ease :)

    Go, Morey!

    Oooooh. Nice.

    Bill Simmons chimes in.

    From his Twitter:

"sportsguy33-- Serious question for @dmorey - were you wearing a black ski mask and holding a gun when you made that Knicks trade?"

Edit to add -- oops, already posted, sorry. Tough thread to stay on top of.

Actually, when a pick is protected, if you don't get it that year b/c it falls under the trade protection stipulation, you get the pick the next year without protection. So really, the 2012 pick if we don't cash in then will have even greater potential in 2013. I don't know about the 2011 situation with the swapping+protection, I haven't ever heard of that happening.

Anyways, Morey destroyed New York by playing hardball. He got everything he wanted out of NYK originally AND THEN he went and got Kevin Martin. Martin is not someone you can find every day. The days of good mid/long range shooters who also get to the line a ton are so far in the past that I wasn't even born.

Honestly, I'm hoping the Rockets don't do so hot the rest of the year. Get a late lotto pick, turn that into Larry Sanders or Greg Monroe to back up Yao and sit back and relax. We're stacked. Yeah, I said it. We're stacked.
