It's more like they were after Martin, an impact scorer at their weakest position and that the Kings preferred the younger, cheaper Landry. You have to give to get.

We should still do the Jeffries deal minus Hughes for Thomas.

this trade hurts but I have a feeling we are preparing for this summer. I think Battier is on the way out.

Heres a 3 way trade where Rockets get to keep Landry and all 3 teams still get what they want...

    Houston Trades: T-Mac
Houston Receives: Kevin Martin, Jared Jefferies, Hilton Armstrong

NY Trades: Jared Jefferies, Larry Hughes, Jordan Hill
    NY Receives: T-Mac, Sergio Rodriguez

Sacramento Trades: Kevin Martin, Hilton Armstrong, Sergio Rodriguez
Sacramento Receives: Larry Hughes, Jordan Hill

Houston gets rid of T-Mac and is able to pick up Kevin Martin. They have to take on Jefferies contract.
NY gets T-Mac and Sergio, 2 players they covet, and give up the same players they'd be giving up for just T-Mac minus two draft picks.
Sacramento gets rid of KMarts contract and picks up Hughes as the new SG and he has a big expiring. Also, get a young big man in Jordan Hill.

    I like this trade...

Here's the draft sheet on Martin from way back when...

NBA Scouting Reports, Pacific Division (Part Three)
    August 8, 2008
Overview: One of the top scorers in the NBA these days and the cornerstone of Sacramento’s future. A super efficient scorer who makes a living at the free throw line. Good height for the shooting guard position. Lacks ideal bulk for his position. Exceptionally quick and possesses fine leaping ability. Spent a ton of time working on his perimeter skills and it definitely shows. Blossoming into a great scorer. Still needs to improve his passing ability and defensive skills. Put together an impressive career at Western Carolina. Showed the raw talent to warrant a first-round selection after his junior year. Appears to be extremely coachable. Has become quite a steal.

Offense: One of the most impressive young scorers in the game right now. Can score in a variety of unorthodox ways. Will make significant contributions as a finisher in transition, a one-on-one player, a spot up shooter, and a ball handler in pick and roll situations. Doesn’t display a textbook shot in terms of fundamentals by any means, but is one of the most consistent and efficient shooters in the game, both on the catch and shoot or off the dribble. Can score from everywhere. Will knock down shots with contact, a hand in his face, and off balance. Has amazing touch and superb creativity improvising offensively. Terrific ball handler. Will get to the rim at a superb rate. Displays an extremely quick first step, and will run the floor hard in transition. A master at using shot-fakes to keep his defender off-balance. Uses his length and athleticism at the rim. Finishes at a high clip with contact despite his lanky frame. Goes to the line like a machine and shoots a great percentage. Lead the entire NBA in free throws made in 07-08. Has a terrific feel for moving off the ball and putting himself in position to make a play. Timing, awareness is superb. Not a playmaker at all in terms of creating for others, but also doesn’t turn the ball over all that much. Willingness to become a better passer could be what puts him over the hump.

    Note the words: CORNERSTONE.

KMart is a legit franchise player imho. And definitely a legit No 2. star alongside Yao.

    I LIKE IT!!!!

All of you are biased. The Rockets win this trade. Landry can't handle a double team, can't rebound, and it is obvious RA doesn't like his defense.

In the trade we get a 26 year old guard who can score in bunches. Yes, he is hurt quite a bit, and this is what made him available, but it is a risk that needs to be taken. Martin is a good 3 pt shooter and has never shot less than 40% in a season in his career with the exception of his rookie year and currently this year (.397%) All the while averaging over 20 PPG the last 4 years.

What especially makes it a no brainer is that with Yao back next season it makes Landry's low post offense less valuable and a wings offense more valuable. It MAY be a wash this season, but once we get Yao back and are strong again in the post, the good scoring wing is a MUST.

I will miss Landry as much as the next guy, but don't let your biased opinions make Landry out to be more than he is. He is a hard nosed, hard working player, who is a pretty good scorer, but pretty limited on his talent. He has NO chance of becoming an elite PF where as Kevin Martin does.

The Rockets completed a deal to move Tracy McGrady, and might just have landed his successor, sending McGrady along with Carl Landry and Joey Dorsey for high-scoring Kings guard Kevin Martin, a person with knowledge of the deal said early Thursday.

Six seasons after he arrived as the NBA scoring champion with league championship aspirations and 6 ½ weeks after he left with the Rockets no longer believing he could help them, McGrady was dealt to the Kings when Martin became available.

The Rockets will also receive former first-round Rockets pick Kenny Thomas, center Hilton Armstrong and point guard Sergio Rodriguez. The Rockets will send cash to the Kings, but with the trade, will also move under the luxury tax line, a secondary goal in the trade talks.

“With Yao (Ming) back next year, we think Kevin gives us a great shot,” the person with knowledge of the deal said. “This also gives us what we need this year.”

The deal reunites Martin with Rockets coach Rick Adelman, with Martin bringing the scoring the Rockets have lacked with McGrady out.

Martin, who has had injury problems in recent seasons, is averaging 20.3 points in 21 games this season, and 17.1 in his career.

Landry has been the Rockets’ second-leading scorer, averaging 16.1 points per game.

The trade ends McGrady’s run in Houston much as he ended his time in Orlando. After playing relatively little following an injury, the seven-time All-Star was traded by both teams for a package of players amid varying degrees of acrimony and disappointment over promise unfulfilled.

With McGrady saying it was time that he began receiving increased playing time, the Rockets instead granted an indefinite leave of absence Dec. 28 while seeking a trade.

McGrady is in the final season of the extension he signed with the Rockets before the 2004-05 season worth $22.46 million this season. Limited to brief first-half stints in six games while coming back from microfracture surgery, McGrady averaged 3.2 points in an average of 7.7 minutes this season, making 7 of 19 shots. Of his 19 points, 10 came in one game against the Clippers.

McGrady’s averaged 25.7 points with 6.2 rebounds and 5.7 assists in his first season with the Rockets, his top scoring season after consecutive years leading the league in scoring.

He finished last season averaging 23.1 points per game with the Rockets, but struggled with injuries through much of his six seasons in Houston and had knee surgeries after each of his two previous seasons with the Rockets.

He played playing just 47 games in 2005-06 because of back issues and just 35 games last season because of the knee problems that led to his microfracture surgery in February.

McGrady was second- or third-team All NBA selection in three of his first five seasons with the Rockets. The Rockets, however, never advanced past the first round of the playoffs, until last season when McGrady was out.

    This.

We all knew that Scola or Landry would go eventually. Landry is a much more appealing prospect to other teams because of his athleticism. Both Landry and Scola can get the job done, obviously Morey wants to clear up Landry's salary on the cap and prefers another efficient outsider shooter to complement Yao when the big man comes back

hate to see Mandry go but this trade makes sense to me. you got to give up something to get something. Landry was the most obvious piece that Morey had to gamble with

Kevin Martin just spoke to Y! Sports' Marc Spears: "I appreciate them letting me go to a playoff caliber team at this time of my career."

Losing Landry is huge for now, but KMart is the superior talent. This will help next year when Yao returns.

I had thought TMac had more value, though.
