Fan relations is one area where I have to admire the current Mavericks regime. They aren't perfect, but they seem to be attentive to the fans and make a concerted effort to improve. Of course, when you have an owner who is more fan than owner, you're much more likely to have more attention paid to fan relations and the like.

Love him or hate him, the Mavs are a far better organization than they were before Mark Cuban bought the team. I would hope that Les would take the good things about Cuban and his organization and duplicate them in Houston (and not adopt the bad things like running on to the court or criticizing the officials, or signing Dennis Rodman, etc.)

You should already know groupies will be able to meet them before a true fan. It sucks but thats the way it is. And who in the hell is that Jay Rocket Guy? Man he sucks.

Because they don't know how to highlight the text and press the delete key to respond to a certain part of the quote. Oh well.

Rockets03, that would have pissed me off too. Damn security. They get your hopes up and then kick you out of the building. Meeting a Rocket is always a great feeling... and they deprived you of it. Those ba$tards. I'll never forget the day I met Clyde.

Wish you luck in the future!

Being a season ticket holder for 5+ years, I have seen the house security detail in action and can tell you R0ckets03 that you are not alone in your plight. I have many stories similar in nature to yours. ABM security is contracted by the Operating Company owned by Chuck Watson, not the Rockets. They are subpar to be kind. Some of these folks really do a great job, but there are defintiely more that do not than do. They are not very fan friendly as a general rule.

I agree with the majority that the rockets need a FAN Relations department, but blaming the players is a stretch. Cuttino, Steve, Shandon and Mo are very fan friendly in my dealings with them. At times, they are overwhelmed because 100 fans are asking for autographs and they really only have time to sign 20.

I will bet you if you talk to someone in the Rockets organization or if Jeff can talk to someone, you may get your chance to mingle with them at another game.

Let's see what their response is before we really call them out.

Man, I can totally feel your pain. Those security guards, regardless of who they are working for...are all total ****heads (insert your favorite expletive) I too am a season ticket holder...and every dealing I have had with any of them...whether it be asking directions...whatever...they have always treated me with total rudeness. I have found though...that these same people work all the events there...not just the Rox games. I think that a bad attitude is a pre-requisite for employment with that group. Im amazed that this is the first time you have experienced it.

sneaking in is much easier, I've found
Rockets03, youre right. It was very Rocketesque of them, they have been doing this type of crap since Les took over. I love the team, but the organization is very very flawed.

Last year, I took a friend and his 8 yr nephew to a game. My friend had never been to one with me and did not know the parking lot well.

When we started leaving, I led them through the rows of the now vacated seats to the right door, as a way to avoid the escaping crowd in the concourse area. The 8yr started walking fast picking up souvenier stuff off the floor. Pretty soon he was an entire section ahead of us. Then my friend actually got ahead of me too, and took a wrong turn.

What to do? As I see the 8yr old fading away and getting more and more lost. he's now 2 sections away. He was headed for a door with two security guards. One right next to me had a headset, with communication ability to the others. I asked him to help me stop that kid. He did not even take the time to look at me. I asked again. He looked. He didn't care. By then, the 8yr old was out the door, and I had to go.

In the end, both got lost. I found the boy 30 minutes later in the parking lot. And my friend walked to a gas station.

I could not believe the security guard did not help.

Man, I remember the Maloof days. After the game was over you could walk right down to the scorers table. We used to get the stat sheets. The only time security would stop you is when you tried to walk into the locker room.

    Ahhhh, the good old days.

Sorry for the "bad taste" that you got from, my understanding, arena personnel ROckets03. The security at the Summit/Compaq has ALWAYS been bad bordering on horrible.

I remember having my HS graduation there, BEFORE Les owned the team I might add, and the security guards where complete asses in dealing with students, nevermind the parents.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you where the victim of a complete breakdown in communication and common sense. They should've known that the team would be leaving after the game to catch a flight and may not have enough time to sign autographs.

If I were you, I would definitely write-in or e-mail both Rocketball and Compaq Center to voice your displeasure!! At least it may cause them to think about going with another security firm in the future.

Does the Compaq Center have both private security guards and Houston Police?

I always see a HPD officer near the Rockets bench.

Sorry I have been delayed responding. My DSL has been down and I just now got a dialup connection.

I'm not going to bother responding the heypartner at this point. It is worthless to do so.

However, I received a phone call from the Rockets director of media relations today, Tim Frank. He told me that he read this thread and wanted to clarify exactly what happened to Rockets03.

The "guest pass" he was given was not a "backstage pass" like you might get at a concert. There are only two passes that the Rockets give out - media and guest. The guest passes are given out by players usually to friends or family members.

It allows family members or friends of players to stay after the game until arena has cleared and the players have showered so they can come out and greet them. Then, they may take them to the back.

However, it DOES NOT give anyone access to players unless they come out to meet them and invite them back. In addition, if anyone gave the impression that Rockets03 would get to go meet the players, they were wrong. This is especially true when the team has a travel day and/or a game the next day.

In essence, the security guards did exactly what they were supposed to in this instance. No player came out to meet Rockets03 so, after the 45 minutes or so he was allowed to wait, they closed up the arena.

If I am correct, Rockets03 may have even received an email to that effect from Tim today. Hope that clarifies things.

I do not blame the players. Like I said, maybe the Rockets didn't know that there are people waiting for them outside. Plus I guess I really didn't understand what the pass was for till Jeff explained it. But that still doesn't excuse the rude behavior of security to a paying cusomer.

Jeff I highly doubt that being rude to people is in their job descriptions. I understand what you are trying to say and I am thankful that you bothered to clear up this misunderstanding. One lady did tell me that I should have just walked into the tunnel to meet the players. She told me this after all the players had left. But this one other guy had told me to just keep on sitting there and waiting. Maybe the security needs to get in sync with their thoughts? Anyways Mr. Frank did email me with his number and I will call him on Thursday.

Also the Events and Promotions manager emailed me to clear up the situation. Even offered me an autograph Cat poster. [IMG]

Thanks for your help Jeff. Either you got more connections then I had anticipated or the power of this BBS is unbelievable. [IMG]

    Actually, it's both! [IMG]

I don't blame you for being pissed at security. In all honesty, I've had problems with Compaq Center security at Rockets games AND at concerts. I'm sure they don't have the easiest job in the world, but they don't do themselves any favors by being rude about it.

I'm glad the Rockets people responded to you like that. They do read this BBS all the time and I believe this thread caused a bit of a stir. They are trying to better their customer service as is the entire NBA. So, they want to be responsive.

As for me, I know alot of these people because I worked with many of them over the course of about 5 months. [IMG]

    R0cketes03,

I am witha my brotha! I am not saying you blamed the Players in this instance...I am just glad some light was shed.

I would call the Operating Company that manages these security clowns and complain though.

I really don't know what happened in your situation.

I was fortunate enough to get those special passes that let you in the player hallways after the game and during halftime more than a couple of times and I have never been stopped and told by security to sit there and wait.

I just flash them like a cop flashing a badge going thru a crime scene and they let me through(of course, these were the expensive season passes so I know I should exert myself had they given me a hard time).

Unless you may have gotten a semi-pass(if there is such a thing) or invalid pass.

Dunno for sure though but they usually know who should be able to go there or not.

Mr. Frank called me up and cleared everything up. The passes are given out by players to their family and friends. Then after the game they might come out and get them. So in that regard I have nothing to complain about. The only thing wrong with the situation is the attitude of the security people. Mr. Frank was kind enough to explain that they will be able to have much more control when they move into the new arena. Right now I guess they really dont have control over the security. He did not tell me that, but maybe Chuck Watson and the Compaq Center are incharge in the security? And I was wrong to start blaming the Rockets for being classless. Obviously they care enough to call me up and explain and apologize for the situation. Kirk from Compaq Center also emailed me and explained the situation. So I would just like to thank everyone for their help. Also I apologize for bad mouthing my beloved Rockets.
