Sam HE'S A FREAKING SOLID BACKUP PLAYER! No more, no less. It is really a pretty decent acquisition. It's not like we signed him to carry the torch for Clyde Drexler or something...
OUTSTANDING PICKUP. adrian griffin = mario elie v2.0 griffin doesn' t have a great shot, but has the tenacity and grit that the rockets need. remember him dunking on yao in dallas? that takes balls for an undersized player. excellent pickup.
Very good move. So instead of paying a mediocre SF MLE money for 4 years, the Rockets nabbed a sharpshooter and a sg/sf who is similar to what Posey gave the rockets at a much cheaper price, I presume. I'd say this is a plus offseason so far. Obviously if griffin got posey money, forget everything I said above.
He is some veteran insurance in line with what Dennis spoke about when he was cautioning against sending the wrong message to Boki. They are clearly signaling that Boki is the future 3 and Rice and AD will be the vets to allow time for Boki to grow into the role. Hawk is a 2 and does not figure into this equation. I see him making the team.
It's a solid move! Now CD let's git some more FAs! Finally some movements in the ROXS front office, NOW show us the new unis...err, I mean.. sign some more players that can help the team!
Now we have two Griffins on the team! I don't thing A. Griffin will start. That'd be too confusing to Francis. "Which Griffin am I supposed to pass to this time?" Sorta like the Pacers having two Millers playing together. That's the major reason they faded late last season. (Ever notice the two Jacksons on the Kings seldom play at the same time?) Seriously, I expect either Rice or Boki to start, with Griffin playing the defensive specialist off the bench role. That means Hawkins is now redundant.
Solid role player. He can play the 2 and the 3 so he is versitile. His shot is very mediocre but he hustles and plays decent defense. So in Free Agency the Rockets get an offensive guy in Pike and a defensive guy in A Griffin. Not bad. Nice to see the Rockets cornering the market in "Griffins"
Good pickup. Rudy T-style get down-and-dirty at Galveston Ball gym type of player. I'm quite pleased with both acquisitions so far.
Oh, I know he's a backup, but for us, he is a starter, and as you said he is nothing more, nothing less, than a backup. That ain't too good, IMO.
I am glad CD is actually doing something to improve the team. I am so pissed when all those FAs being picked up by other teams while Rox has done little. Now, CD, please redeem yourself and get rid of Moochie, Taylor, Cato and get your decent backup PG, strong SF and PF. Nothing is impossible, just look at what Wolvs have done!!!
http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/Rockets_Sign_Adrian_Griffin-82070-34.html Rockets Sign Adrian Griffin August 7, 2003 - The Houston Rockets have signed free agent Adrian Griffin to a contract, general manager Carroll Dawson announced today. The 6-5, 230-pound guard/forward has averaged 5.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.15 steals in four NBA seasons with Boston and Dallas. ?Adrian brings a defensive tenacity to the floor,? Dawson said. ?He is a tireless worker and his hustle will provide a spark for our team. Our main focus during this offseason has been to add players that will be a good fit in our system and Adrian is just that.? Last season, Griffin averaged 4.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.04 steals in 74 games with the Mavericks, starting 48 times. He led Dallas with 2.69 steals per 48 minutes, ranking ninth overall in the NBA. On the Mavericks, Griffin ranked third with 77 steals, fifth with 264 rebounds and fifth with 105 assists. His free throw percentage of .844 placed him fourth on his squad. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high 17 points vs. Memphis on March 1. He led Dallas in rebounds three times, including a season-high 12 rebounds vs. Boston on Jan. 10. In the 2003 NBA Playoffs, Griffin averaged 2.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 8.7 minutes in 15 games. He scored a playoff career-high 15 points vs. Sacramento in Dallas? Western Conference Semifinals Game 2 win on May 8. Griffin joins the Rockets following two-year stints with both the Celtics and the Mavericks. He began his NBA career in Boston after playing in the Continental Basketball Association, the Italian A-1 League and the United States Basketball League. The Seton Hall graduate signed with Boston after winning the 1999 CBA MVP award and averaged 6.7 points with career highs of 5.2 rebounds and 1.61 steals during his rookie season with the Celtics. Following the first month of his NBA career, he received Co-Rookie of the Month honors for November 1999. The following season, Griffin averaged 2.1 points and 2.0 rebounds in his final year with the Celtics. He signed with Dallas prior to the 2001-2002 season and averaged a career-high 7.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and a team-leading 1.29 steals in his first year with the Mavericks. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
A. Griffin doesn't need to be an offensive threat, just a defensive presence. If, as some people on this board think, Yao, Steve, and Cat, each avg around 20 this season, and MoT coming off the bench for 10, there isn't a HUGE need for scoring. We got sharpshooters in Rice and Pike who can have some monster games from outside, as well as an X factor in EG. GREAT pickup by the Rockets.
I really like this pickup. I'm glad the Rockets are finally doing something in the offseason, and I think Griffin is a good blue-collar player who can help us greatly on the defensive end. I liked what I saw when he was with the Mavs last year, and I'm pretty sure the money we're saving instead of signing Posey makes this well worth it. My first post! I've been here a while, but I've always just been to lazy to post anything. Please don't hate on me.
i completely agree. two good recent acquisitions for a cap-strapped team. i'd rather have griffin than t-mo anyways.
Adrain Griffin is more of shooting guard, same as Piakowski, right. But they're both tweeners, who can handle the small forward positions, but they're more 2 guards, right. I dont know what the coaches are planning, if they plan on moving Francis over to the 2, or playing Piakowski and Griffin at the 3, or what, but one of these positions is going to be overloaded now that Piakowski and Griffin are aboard. So what Im getting at is this:It seems like the Rockets are really fortifying the shooting guard spot or possibly the small forward position, does this give a hint of things to come regarding Mobley or Rice's future with the Rockets? Im saying it does. and that the signing of Griffin means one of those guys will be traded before the season begins.
